My unit had about a day of "reacting to an ambush" training prior to every deployment. Then they sent us to Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. We did a lot of "on the job" training back then. We were a tank unit and constantly deploying without tanks and just expected to instantly turn into combat infantrymen. It went about as well as expected.

Fuck man that sounds about how it went for my Father in the Australian Army. 2003, Iraq too many under trained soldiers got sent, Father was a reservist and decided not to get deployed but fuck man all his friends were fucked up and we only lost 4 men and yet the lack of training took its toll still. The training was a section of the deployment training and it was embarassing. I can't speak for my entire country but for some, they were not ready

My fellow 03XX/11X knows, violence of action is key. If you are on the recieving end of an ambush, you must assault through the enemy and ultimately move out of the kill zone. I vaguely remember the old tactics manuals used to teach: Return fire in the direction of the enemy fire while simultaneously screaming and throwing grenades. Like you have no other choice but to exert as much violence out of your body as you can as it might be your last. Stay savage gents.

POG here. Never been in combat. All I can say is I would hope the first one going down (if anyone) is not the machine gunner, (I would hope to hell he is on patrol) an area target with bursts of fire can very well pin them down while the riflemen can move in and kill. Oh and even more important hope it doesn't happen in a flat open field from above. That would be pretty bad pretty fast. But who knows. I bet it is so fast you really don't realize how out of control you are.

@C S Good thought process brotha. It is absolutely essential for a patrolling unit to have high volume capable weapon systems. Most infantry squads will request to have a 0331 attachment during patrols. At minimum, a squad T/O will have 1 SAW/IAR in each team. You better have some of the most violent/observant teammate behind them as well, as this is key to having a lethal unit. Good input brother. 👌

I’ve hunted my entire life and spent so much time using my rifles in such a different way. These videos always shock me on how much differently you have to think and use your equipment in these situations and how much I need to practice in a different way. Always felt like a master shot and silent tracker but these videos humble me. An Elk doesn’t shoot back. Slowly building up an effective kit as I save money. If it makes you feel better, being a good hunter brings a lot of other skills that have uses in combat. Some of the things you learned from elk and take for granted, a lot of us tactical bros have little practice with. Noise and light discipline, masking your scent, tracking and covering your own trail, fitness in terms of moving with a pack, knowing what to bring to keep yourself warm and dry, etc.

Also jogging and getting your heart rate up to immediately go prone and fire at your targets is also good physical practice since that high heart rate combined with heavy breathing when firing changes things a bit that people who were never in combat or have ever trained for do not realize the night and day difference

Weighted running makes a huge difference…even sprinting in quite intervals and resting. Stimulating a quick heart rate is so important to be able to maneuver in situations where your body shouldn’t limit you

Knowing how to shoot is important, but it's worthless if you can't run 50 yards... or even carry your weapon any distance with gear. I have a bad back (two surgeries) and training is HARD, but it needs to be done. That being said, even with training... I'm totally screwed if I have to run with gear on my back. This was a very interesting video. There is also a significant difference of mindset compared to my training as a Finnish recon NCO. Our goal was mainly suppress and exfil, because we were expecting to be outgunned against any Russian element we encountered. So get distance and call hell from our battalion mortar co and and artillery within range (Finnish system allows you to call in all guns in range without actually knowing where they are)

"A crafty enemy will set a weak ambush you are meant to break through. Confident because you have dealt with the threat, your guard relaxed, you walk into the second, stronger ambush." Best way to avoid an Ambush. Leave your Stronghold through different gates at different times. Never get in a pattern where you are out the "west" gate at 0700 and on "orange" route at 0705 headed to OP Charlie. Even the most bush league enemy can figure out where, when and how to hit you if you do that enough times. Mix your timing, rate of travel, hold ups, route and exit, entry points to keep them guessing. Write the SOP that works for you and practice until everyone knows it like house clearing. It's almost as complex when you take mounted/dismounted into consideration.

One of the hardest things to learn with a team is avoiding those lulls in fire. Mag changes and malfunctions are going to happen it’s important to maintain sustained fire in those situations. You see it a couple times when they were running the far ambush drill. If someone is moving in contact someone should always be firing. It’s even harder with smaller teams because like here with a 2 man team, that one man has to pick up fire on his buddy’s mag change if that other team is moving. Also depending on terrain it takes a lot of practice to know when and where to bound. Sometimes you might have to take an extra bound or sit tight. The shit really is an art.

The Ambush is one of the most trained things both being the person Ambushing and the one reacting to the Ambush. that is where a 249 would come into play. they are all using m4's/ar15's. being able to send more rounds will help with casualties along with calling out the distance/direction/description. Casualty out in the open is not good so it's better to try and get fire superiority before collecting fallen/injured to prevent more casualties. if the casualty is conscious you yell at him to see if he can move, fire back, take cover. if not, you move, fire back, and take cover.

Got ambushed in an open field in Ghazni back in ‘12. I was an EOD team member so I didn’t have much actual combat training at all. The moment rounds started flying my head dropped to the ground so much faster than the rest of my body that I fuckin ate my EOTech and nearly broke my nose. My lip / nose was bleeding so bad, that when I eventually low crawled over to my TL he lifted my Kevlar to get a look at me and thought I was shot 🤣 After we had taken care of the problem, the adrenaline dump hit me so hard I threw up and felt like shit the whole 10 mile walk back to the cop. Good times.

Good army field manuals I would suggest looking at would be FM 3-21.8 (Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad), FM 5-31.65 (Booby Traps), FM 3-25.26 (Map Reading and Land Navigation), FM 3-90 (Tactics), and finally FM 3-05.70 (Survival). Total Resistance: Swiss Army Guide to Guerrilla Warfare is also a good read, you can find all of these for free online.

He has 4 or 5 in the series now, but they take a LONG time to make. Coordinating these sorts of drills and bringing in knowledgeable instructors takes a long time, and that’s not even including the time it takes to edit them. As quickly as I want more info, I try to be patient because I know they take a lot of time and effort. And if you like the deadly in the mountain series, watch the urban survival series as well. They all tie together. Watch, learn, train. Time waiting for new info, should be spent reviewing prior videos and training using the principals he presents.

We used to practice that between haybails while larping on our flat range in a field. Biggest thing we practiced was how to not shoot each other.

Some things I'd be interested as seeing as a civ (who has read a fair number of army manuals): - How to handle somebody getting wounded in/around a contact scenario - round conservation/ preparing for (possible) longer engagement during an engagement (bcuz as civ's we're not getting 'bailed out' by a nearby squad or calling in a brrrrps): If you only had 8 mags, 2 40mm smoke, and say 2-3 40mm HE or frags...how to know when to use ammo liberally, and what to hold back even as youre attempting to crush that enemy. - Sun Tzu/Machievelli/ Robert Greene (33 Strategies of War): If you are trying to detach from a far ambush, preparing for a counter-ambush if they were to pursue...or maybe the enemy detachs and you then try to get to next hill over (in sight of their escape route) and try to initiate counter-ambush as follow up. Just a couple topics I could see as being helpful to be covered by people with experience.

Round conservation. That’s something that you will not be really taught in a manual. So I’m Recon, unlike the Infantry, we don’t have the numbers but we have the fire power for a Section sized element. The only one really going to be taught rate of fire is your 240 Gunner (Scouts don’t use SAWs, but replace all information with the SAW if need be). In recon your dismount 240 Gunner is the second most experienced guy in the team but in the Infantry your TL will let the gunner know to go from Rapid, Sustained, and Cyclic. (Cyclic is a Machinegunner/ Automatic Riflemen wet dream)

I've watched a decent amount of helmet cam cahnnels like Funker530 to see the TL letting that SAW dude go cyclic (or sometimes somebody on a auto-GL system etc). It makes sense that the biggest one concerned about it is the SAW dude (seems like they carry maybe 3-4 drums). Since that is the squads/groups firepower. I was thinking about 'rough estimates' about average # rounds spent in killing 1 enemy combatant (in recent times in Iraq/Afghanistan. I can't remember the stuff I was reading that was fairly believable sources, but it was something insane like 10k or 50k rounds. No doubt that is some average of all sorts (and might include your AC130 brrps spent etc). But it had me thinking that if you were in a SHTF situation that 8mag +1 (or even 10+1) loadout isn't much. Even if your group has 10-12 ppl in it. you can go through that in a near engagement or CQB fairly quickly I'd imagine... and was thinking about fact that civs or ppl in SHTF aren't goign to have no backup squad bail them out or get evac'd via helicopter, boat etc. Certainly no close-air support unless somebody starts selling DIY bayraktar tb-2 kits. ...so, in such shitshow you gotta have rounds to not only survive those engages but also to protect your ass in your 'retreat' back to your HQ/woods/whatever. I imagine it'd be a very bad time if you survived 'going into town' to loot supplies from your woods HQ...survived CQBs for a few days only to have to trek back w/o any ammo while being chased by some buddies of those you just wrecked...bad ending to that scenario.

Great video. One thing I would add is, once contact is initiated and “CONTACT (Left, Right, Rear, Front)” is called, the disposition of the enemy may not be obvious, so calling out a 3 D’s (Direction, Distance, Description) report can be beneficial to coordinate and control the fires of your unit so you aren’t wasting ammo doing recon by fire. An example of that would be “CONTACT LEFT, 100 Meters. Second Floor, first window on the right.” In the Marine Corps we used ADDRAC for essentially the same thing, but a little more complicated. The Army’s 3 D’s is much simpler.
