I’m a taxi driver in rural SA…. I drive a Camry all day every day. Yes, they are the most funless car in the world but like it DOES NOT DIE. We’ve got a couple cars in the fleet with 600k kilometres on it. They are the perfect taxi. Cheapish, funless, comfy enough and the most reliable car you’ll ever drive.

Same thing you get with a Honda civic. They’re not super powerful cars, but they get good mileage, easy enough to source parts for, and last for forever. Had an ‘03 civic for my first car, quarter million miles on it and it still runs alright. That baby never broke down on me once, even after it started overheating because the water pump failed, it managed to limp home and into the driveway before giving up. Known many a person with a camery or a civic and that’s always the way the story goes. I’ve currently got a Kia forte, like the baseline of the baseline 2019 manual FE. Just a little four banger, I think it gets about 135HP, but that fucker gets 40 miles to the gallon. Drives smooth too, never had an issue with it.

I work as a mechanic at a Toyota dealership, so I found it very interesting to see a 2AR-FE engine under the hood of that Camry. The 2AR engine was phased out for the current generation of base Camry engines in the US, replaced by the A25A-FKS. That's also a 2.5l but it has more power and torque at 203hp (151kW) and 184lb.ft (249nM) than the 2AR at 178hp (132kw) and 172lb.ft (233nM). I can't say for sure how those two engines compare in the same car, but I'd imagine the current engine would feel less lethargic than the one in that rental car does.

@@Averna222 the engine cover was what I noticed first, the one used on the later A25A covers the whole valve cover, while on the 2AR it only covers a portion. And also the valve cover on the 2AR is metal, while a plastic valve cover is used on the A25A.

Stock performance with the A25A-FKS is much nicer. It's a better fit for the XV70 chassis compared to the 2AR in stock trim. The XV70 with the A25A is measured to be a whole second quicker to 60mph than the XV70 with the 2AR. Models with the 2GR V6 is probably still the more desirable one for performance, but the A25A is markedly better than the 2AR in stock performance for the XV70. That said, 2ARs have a lot of tuning potential, although I'm not sure if I'm the only one who's crazy enough to tune a Camry.

@ross2k220
@ross2k220 Жыл бұрын
@@WelcomeToDERPLANDWell you need to take into account that a certain amount of horsepower is required to simply idle an ICE engine, so the amount of HP drawn by the compressor mounted on a sufficiently large engine likely comes closer to being a rounding error than a significant percentage of lost efficiency. On the other hand, an EV has to run a whole other motor to power the A/C system, and the increased inertia of a modern (very heavy) EV over a normal car means that the excess drag of opening the windows may be less impactful than running a whole other system off a battery whose effective capacity is greatly influenced by operating temperature. It's worth noting that hybrids largely, if not always, use the engine to run the climate controls and I can only imagine that's because there's an efficiency (if not, reliability or complexity) advantage to be had It's likely that your driving habits drastically skew the data one way or the other so I can't tell you with any certainty why your results differ from the norm with ICE cars, but it's definitely worth looking into.

Dunno if you'd ever read this or not, but with modern EFI vehicles, it's a good idea to pop a battery terminal off and either short them or wait half an hour, then pop her back on again; to reset the adaptive values in the ECU's KAM. ESPECIALLY with an all-terrain race car (abused rental). They learn how they get driven, what kind of fuel they get, etc., and adjust throttle response and long-term fuel trims accordingly. I'm confident in being able to say that doing this would have given you half a litre less fuel consumption. Also, having worked on and driven just a few of them, letting the slushbox kick-down earlier, or even manually shifting down a gear accelerating up hills will also help.

The ECU doesn't really keep your driving profile in memory. It keeps adaptive fuel maps based on engine, fuel, and outside conditions. It doesn't change throttle maps, but fuel maps, and not because of the driver. Yes the driver might use it more aggressively but that doesn't change the fueling. The only thing that would use more fuel is more power and cars do not change their power based on drivers.

Hypermiling sorta pro tip but rather a test idea: I've seen auto manufacturers (specifically Subaru iirc) suggest that the most efficient way to drive is to accelerate from a standstill at 2/3 throttle, then cruise for as long as possible without brakes and with minimal throttle input. I'd love to see that compete in fuel efficiency against your preferred hypermiling style of barely pressing the throttle at all at any times. Edit: seeing as this Camry has cruise control, you could also try hypermiling it with cruise control and compare the results
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 Жыл бұрын
It's basically the BSFC map. ICEs have zones of max efficiency. Different engines vary, but in a very general sense, for N/A engines it is roughly between 1.8K to 2.5K RPM, 70-80% load. Turbo cars are whatever max load that avoids fuel enrichment, you can probably see where it happens if you can get data out of the A/F ratio sensors. It's probably something like between 50%-70%? Obviously, avoid brakes where possible to prevent turning energy into heat and brake dust, even electric regen can't get all of it. So the idea to maximize fuel eco is to either use the engine at it's most efficient, or use it as little as possible (neutral, very low rpm rolling, etc).
@Mrqwertar
@Mrqwertar Жыл бұрын
>either use the engine at it's most efficient, or use it as little as possible yeah, that's exactly what I mean, why not actually compare the two approaches? also, coasting in neutral does not save fuel since all fuel injected cars shut off fuel feed when throttle is released above like 1300 RPM (and a lot of carbureted cars did it too, but at a higher RPM, closer to 2500)
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 Жыл бұрын
@@Mrqwertar The main purpose of neutral is to prevent engine drag from slowing down. The hardcore approach would be to shut off the engine entirely, which hybrids do automatically, manuals do illegally, and automatics inadvisably. Sure if you need to slow down anyways, leave in gear and let DFCO allow zero fuel engine spinning. But if your goal is to roll as far as possible without touching the go pedal (or shutting off the ignition), then your best option is neutral. Leaving the car in gear means energy is lost from engine friction, which you have to make up with gas anyways. Also, in neutral the engine RPM is as low as it can go, which means the least energy needed to keep it going. At 40 mph, 0.4 gal/hr is basically 100 mpg.

I actually like the new, hybrid Camry. My dad has one and I drive it whenever I have a chance. It's not 'fast', but it doesn't feel slow at all. It has something around 210 HP (combined) and feels surprisingly agile for a boat that it is. Suspension feels comfortable but not floaty. It only drinks around 5.5l/100 km (I've seen it go below 5) even at highway speeds (140 km/h is the limit here). It's also filled with gadgets and driver assists. Some very useful (like the windshield HUD) others mostly for show (EV mode just sucks - only under 50 km/h and it drains battery very quickly). I wouldn't mind daily driving it,, but I can't really afford one right now.

It's got Toyota quality, it's decently comfortable, and the gas mileage is incredible (50mpg on rural roads; no hybrid, no turbo). It has basically no torque because of the CVT, it doesn't exactly look good, there are no bells nor whistles. It's truly is the Japanese "An Car", and I absolutely love it. It's also the Business Car because I looked at myself like a business and asked what made the most business sense. Sure, a Ford Ranger or Maverick would have been cool, but I just drive to work 99% of the time, and I'm done with Ford's terrible quality now. the 2AR engine is actually a pretty high compression motor (10.4:1) and in the hybrid models they have a huge aggresive camshaft since the engine only kicks in at higher speeds. This makes it so people actually swap it into cheap racetrack builds since theyre so easy to find in trashed junkyard camries. however when you take away the big camshafts to give it a smoother idle and power curve and mate it to a slushy transmission, its not the most exciting thing.

I'm willing to bet that an AWD version of the vehicle would feel a lot more responsive. @@chE3z1Which makes sense because stock 2ARs in Camrys are really tuned much more towards comfort and longterm reliability, like a lot of Toyota engines. There's no doubt that this engine has plenty of tuning potential, with the examples you listed, amongst others, but as it pertains to a stock Camry, it's the least desirable powertrain option for the XV70 if one wants good stock performance. It is indeed a 2AR! Many markets had this engine in their XV70s instead of the A25A. The XV70 had a facelift not too long ago, and one of the changes (at least in certain markets) is swapping the 2AR for the A25A.

the only way a 2.5 Camry is doing 270whp is slapping a turbo on it. no bolt ons or tune is going to bring the hp from 175 up to 300hp lol. That's even tough for cars that come stock with turbos.

gotta keep it real here, the one thing we Americans get right is calculating fuel economy in distance/volume of fuel vs volume of fuel/specific unit of distance. is much easier to do your own calculations based on your trip and needs using something like mpg km/L for that

Recently I was in one and it had a rough ride, one of the least adjustable air conditioning and some strange vent blowing at your face directly all the time. It very much isn't designed for people over 5'10 but the hybrid acceleration hits you in the back
