I had a 09 370z, 01 Porsche Boxster S, 95 Saturn SW2, and a 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0T. He had an MR2 Spyder, 2016ish Chevy Cruze, a 90s Saturn SL1 and a 2000 BMW 540 All of them would clock better MPG when we would typically flat out 1-2 and skip to 5th or 6th. Sometimes it was lower throttle just to hear the engines scream for a bit longer in my case, but yeah. We kept things as consistent as possible, traffic too since it was 10pm to 4a or 7a on the way home. Hand calculating mileage, not using onboard stuff. Usually running about an E30 mix for me as that achieved around a 93 octane mix that I shot for, same gas station, etc. He probably ran more like an E20, his cars typically didn't need premium. Pretty well controlled all things considered. Not a massive increase in most cases, usually a mile or two to the gallon. Boxster usually got 26 vs 23 with normal driving, best gain out of my stable. Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure my old 90s Jetta TDI did better the harder I beat on it getting up to speed, and I think my old diesel Chevette way back when did as well. Mind you, I've also hyper-mileaged those cars and got some pretty high scores on them but just general issue driving vs getting to speed asap I remember them doing better if I beat on them. they couldn't do what Opel was trying to achieve either, the 4L60's high rpm problems were never fixed so the automatic V8 commodores would also explode on the autobahn and fail the full throttle test that killed the omega V8, the only reason they were successful is because they weren't limited to in-house transmissions(so the commodore gets a Borg-Warner T-56 for the V8's manual transmission while the omega would not have been able to offer a manual transmission because no GM manual available to them could take the LS1's torque) and didn't need to design it for the autobahn

I have a lowered Chevy S10 (small pickup - as close as we had to utes in the early 90s) that I daily'd before taking it off the road for a V8 swap. You can absolutely carry groceries in the bed without them flying everywhere. Here's the trick - most beds will have anchor points for ratchet straps. Put up a ratchet strap going from one side to the other up near the cab, and when you put your groceries in, feed the ratchet strap through the handle loops of the bags, then cinch it. As long as you aren't going way too fast over bumps you will be fine.

@DUKE_of_RAMBLE Жыл бұрын
Yea it's all about the power band, and getting the vehicle into its most efficient RPM range. If you're not making enough torque to go up a hill, then you're just dumping in fuel to inefficiently go slow. An engine builder who I bought ported out heads from, dropped a bombshell on me (as a teenager), that increasing horsepower DOES NOT _necessarily_ mean increasing fuel consumption! Because if you are increasing horsepower by increasing *efficiency,* you're making more power with the SAME FUEL AMOUNT! So it's actually to our benefit to do all the various "Free Mods" to our vehicles that we can! _(free or inexpensive, in so far as mods that improve performance without spending anything, or just a couple bucks)_
@DUKE_of_RAMBLE Жыл бұрын
Oh and the usual increasing of RPMs at a hill, isn't actually a gear change. It's the torque converter 'unlocking', which brings RPMs up by like 200-300RPM. Some 90s, early 00s cars actually referred to this as 'Over Drive', and it was toggled by just a button, but they weren't another physical gear in the transmission. _(although, with some cars now having 8spd gearboxes, they may actually be shifting into a lower gear; not the case with Wade's vehicles)_

This kind of vehicle is actually pretty popular in brazil as well. Look up: Fiat 147 City (dating from the mid-late 70's and based on the Brazilian version of the Fiat 127, the 147) and Fiorino pickup (based on the brazilian Uno), the Strada (based on the brazilian Palio), which Stellantis has been selling as the RAM 750 in north america for a good few years now); Chevrolet Montana, which was first based on the Corsa (i guess you'd call it the Holden Barina???), then on the Agile (a brazilian project), and now on the Tracker; VW Saveiro, based on the Gol (not Golf), etc. We also had the Renault Oroch for a few years, the Ford Courier for most of the 90s and 00's...

You should get a hardtop locking bed cover that you can remove when you need the bed for large stuff, and a cargo net to put toward the cab so cargo does not move around as much. I'm in the US, and I have an 02 Ford F-150 4 door crew cab with the beefy V8 for my truck stuff, and that's how I solved my issues if I have family filling up the truck cab.

I entirely, wholeheartedly agree with modern cars being too smart. What is wrong with a simple slider for the climate control? Physical buttons, switches, levers and dials just cannot be beat for these things. Don't get me wrong - I love me a gadget! And I love that modern cars have a tablet in the dashboard because it's useful to have a larger screen for the satnav, or to navigate a playlist, but that should be 100% seperate from more essential car features. I actually prefer "dumb" cars like my old 2004 Peugeot 206, or my current Smart, because essential systems do *not* run through the goddamn radio! If I wanted a big tablet in the middle, I could always rip it out and throw in a Android tablet or an iPad or something.

In regards to the infotainment system, there are a bunch of companies nowadays making plug and play android auto/carplay displays you could swap in, I'd suggest maybe looking around you could probably find something that fits in there and would be better than the stock garbage
@LevelUp_ErikJ Жыл бұрын
GM vehicles from the 2010s are a bit of a weird specimen. I know that my 2014 Equinox infotainment system is actually 3 separate components: the actual radio/head unit, the control panel, and the touchscreen. Try to swap the radio out, and half the control panel and the built-in touchscreen becomes useless. There are only about 2 or 3 solutions for my particular vehicle, and I'm assuming there are even less for this vehicle, if there are any at all.
@bradhaines3142 Жыл бұрын
@@LevelUp_ErikJ cant swap the radio without swapping the screen too, you just have to get something that'd fill the void. theyre usually measured in 'dinn' typically a touch screen is going to be a double, and you'll need an aftermarket trim piece for that specific car. but otherwise the rest should work. there are also some that come with a backup camera if you want that upgrade too
@FastSloth87 Жыл бұрын
@@LevelUp_ErikJ my 2012 Fiat has a weird setup too, it's not touchscreen tho (thankfully). There's the regular radio thing where u expect it, and separate from it it's a WINDOWS MOBILE, voice commands only, activated by a single button on the steering wheel, NOT bluetooth, USB only, mp3 player.

The Ute being heavier than the sedan actually makes some sense when you consider that, what you take out in sheet metal by cutting the ass end of the car off and replacing it with a truck bed, you have to put back in by way of stiffening to make the chassis more rigid. Same reason why convertibles typically weigh more than their two-door coupe and four-door sedan counterparts.
@lupulflamand5673 Жыл бұрын
I think you can upgrade the infotainment screen and throw an aftermarket exhaust system to make it better.
@dougstubbs9637 Жыл бұрын
My mate had to have the air conditioning something replaced behind the dashboard on his VE, and while it was out, the instrument panel, the info system was updated to a Tesla style system, including reverse camera. Really great stuff. About sixteen hundred Aussie bucks. The VE dunnydore owned here by the child bride is an ‘International’ pack added to the povo pack. Nice wheels, better dash including camera and park sensors. The upgrade packs were great value buying over the years from Holden.

The closest thing we got overhere are the Chevy Caprice (11'-17') with the 6.0L LS, but only for police duty. Some of them are being retired now and can be bought by the public. if it’s still running stock airbox, try switching to a cone air filter. gave my ol’ mazda 6 a deeper sound to it. might worth trying since it’s like a cheaper $50-70 “upgrade”.

one of the easiest and cheapest upgrades to get more performance is a bigger intake and exhaust. i dont think thatd help the economy though

@@DumbArse depends on the engine. through years of driving the same route it maybe improved fuel economy by my guess 3-7%. but my car is older and newer stock airboxes tend to be better. and aftermarket exhaust just do improve mileage since having more power means running lower rpm at higher speeds. but yeah newer cars usually do worse mileage with cone airfilters

Actually the whole entertainment system (apart from the buttons) is GM. Same as in a Opel Astra or Insignia from 2013. Either GM said "We need to make some things for this car" or the Aussie designers were like "Nope, not our business to do entertainment stuff". But all in all Bruce 2 seems like a proper Aussie ride.

Still one of the best cars ever made. My Dad always had Holdens for company cars, starting with a VT Exec in 2002 and finishing up with a VF Calais V in 2019. What an absolute beauty that thing was. One of the nicest cars I've ever driven. And to be honest, maybe I'm biased but I didn't even find the MyLink system to be that bad. Yeah it crashed a couple of times while I was driving and needed a reboot, but otherwise, really, it was fine. I'd prefer it over the fully touch screen infotainment systems in most new cars, because a lot of the controls are still physical buttons and knobs. As for not being able to do grocery shopping if you have another person with you - when I grew up our family car was a WB One Tonner (we lived on a farm and I'm an only child), bench seat with 3 on the tree. We'd go into town to do the weekly shop and put everything in the tray in boxes, and tie it all in securely. And the WB didn't even have a torneau cover - everything was just out in the open, apart from cold stuff like milk and meat that obviously went in the esky. I think its a crying shame that everyone decided that they had to be "trendy" and buy a Tonka truck, eventually causing Holden to die off. GM didn't exactly help either.
@whatbroicanhave50character35 Жыл бұрын
Bud why don't you get a cargo gate or a bed partition if you want to use it for smaller shit like groceries? Also they do make hard tonneau covers for holden commodore utes. A bit pricey but they exist if you have a need for it. Edit: He was aware, and already had them. They're literally sitting right there next to the car in this video.
