Garden Bird Parus Major Nest Building

Captured using a nest box camera fitted with motion detection over a period of a few weeks.
This video covers nest building from day one to the last egg being laid.
Time compressed down to 6mins the Great Tit female can be seen building her nest using various materials.
There is also the odd visit from a Blue Tit.

Wonderful.I cleaned out out our nestbox in late autumn with boiling water and detergent, and rinsed and dried it well, and the nest I removed was so beautiful, made of moss and soft stuff like this...they raised two clutches of babies in it last year, and the first clutch this year have just flown..A camera would be a good investment.I hope they raise another brood this spring.

@MrHumbugz the motion detector is software and comes as part of i-Catcher . I use this software to monitor my boxes.

Thank for your email the bottom of the bird box is made of wooden slats so no water will stay in the bottom and just wanted to know if that was ok as the other bird box looks the same but the bottom is solid like yours, and can you recommend a camera for next year please Many thanks Bob

+Bob Wareham Many boxes have small holes drilled in the base to allow water to drain out but I have never seen boxes with slats in. If the gat between the slats is small it may not be a problem. You could always add a new wooden base over the slats just to make sure. I use HD camcorders now that require quite a bit of modification to work. I am not sure what is available now but if you do a search for "nest box cameras" there should be loads to choose from. Make sure the camera has a CCD sensor works well in low light and has lights or infra red if you don't mind black and white images. That's correct a Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) . Both types of bird nest in the same type of boxes.
