Barn Quilts were used 300 years ago to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune to immigrants settling in Pennsylvania and eventually into other parts of the country. They were also used for travelers to identify certain properties. We have them in rural Virginia also. I love them! So pretty!

Laura, I'm sure Aaron will agree with me here, but you should let your momma have that white arbor. It would be so cool to see what she can do with it in her garden space and it sounds like she has a plan for it, too! You can take us on the ride along when you show up and try and sneak it in her space like she tried to do with the plant stand in the Hartley!

The things hanging on the barns are called Hex signs. Different images, colors, and patterns are supposed to offer blessings or protection. I live in Amish country in PA and almost every barn has Hex signs. My mom loves to do the driving tours around the countryside to see all the gorgeous barns. Thank you again for another beautiful and inspirational video!
@GwynneDear
@GwynneDear Жыл бұрын
I was always told they are called barn quilts and are hung to represent the work women do on the farm which isn’t seen on the land the way men’s work is.
@sustainabetty8069
@sustainabetty8069 Жыл бұрын
@@GwynneDear That’s really cool! I’ve never heard that before. From a quick google search, it looks like hex signs and barn quilts aren’t the same thing. Barn quilts are inspired by hex signs but lean more towards quilting designs. Hex signs are Penn Dutch and their designs have specific meanings and are meant to protect or “place a hex” on the buildings to protect them from harm.
@GwynneDear
@GwynneDear Жыл бұрын
@@sustainabetty8069 I’m from southwest Virginia and we have a big Mennonite community here, which is where you see the most barn quilts, so it makes sense that the two are connected.

Hi, Laura. I love your videos; as a hobby, I am a native plant specialist and gardener for the U.S. and am currently pursuing my master's in biomedical engineering. You DO have tons of cacti native to your area, which I believe is the Great Basin and Range. But from other videos, I know you look for plants such as lupine. You have tons of native lupine in your area, and not only are they indigenous, but many are also extremely drought tolerant and prefer your highly alkaline soil. They also act more as a ground cover/shrub, blooming profusely. These include: -Lupinus polyphyllus -Lupinus leucophyllus -Lupinus rivularis -Lupinus argenteus

I'm pretty sure she was a nurse, so she thrives on service to others, nurturing and healing. They are all very strongly connected to Aaron's father's church, that's how Aaron and Laura met. They were both doing work with the church. People involved in spiritual life have friends and family and church members that support and inspire each other. Service to others, joy, kindness, generosity etc. are contagious, yes? 🙏🌞👼

The quilts on barns celebrates the history throughout Oregon’s countryside. One can travel around Oregon and follow a quilt trail. I used to think a quilt on a barn designated the barn as a historical site but as it turns out, it’s all about the quilt. During the Revolutionary War, Barn Quilts were used to show American forces that the area was safe, secure, and supplies were available.

It was really fun to watch you and your mom together -- it's like going on a garden tour with your best garden buddy! Not sure if this comment will be seen in the bazillions of comments, but just to clarify a couple of the plants if anyone is curious.... the purple plant in the church garden is 'Pale Puma' Purple Heart (Setcreasea pallida) (not coleus), and the yellow is Zexmenia (Wedelia texana) (not coreopsis), a couple of Texas tough perennials. Yes! You should! I started on an apartment balcony and learned so much about gardening just from growing things in containers. A couple tips: get the biggest containers you can fit up there because watering is challenging and bigger retains more moisture. Also, if storage of your pots is an issue in the winter just leave the soil in them and stick some evergreen foliage in to make them decorative all winter too. 🙂

I remember loving the jacaranda trees that grew everywhere in Southern California when I lived there, after they finish blooming the petals fall and look like purple snow.

Mom's here! Love it when you two get together. Such wonderful loving banter. Those lady slipper orchids at minutes 29 to 30 brought brought tears to my eyes. We have a beautiful pink lady slipper that grows wild here in Virginia. That stand is amazing! These videos are so enjoyable. So glad you are continuing this series. I go back and look at them, pausing over those that spark an idea for my own garden or just wallowing in their beauty.

Hi Laura, Aaron and Susan! I enjoy seeing both Aaron and Susan in these videos. Both bring a different view. Laura, I agree with Aaron, give your Mom the arbor! She did give you the beautiful plant stand. I agree with Susan, too, that it would look much better at their place. All of the submissions were very pretty. Thank you so much for sharing and to those whose submissions were picked!

Loving all of the inspirational videos, my baby girl and I watch every morning. The flower at 29:35 is Cypripedium parviflorum (also known as Lady's Slipper) part of the orchid family, it is native to North America. I was introduced to it by my grandfather when I was young during hikes near his home in Bissett Creek, Ontario, Canada zone 4a, it grows wild in the forests up here, by far my favorite wildflower.

The yellow orchids from the Manitoba garden are called Ladyslippers. They are a native plant but are not to be disturbed or taken from the wild. Thankfully, Ladyslippers are beginning to show up commercially, which enables gardens like this to have a collection. In certain areas, they are pink, although they are rare.

She taught 1st grade for 30 years & always spoke to me & my siblings like we were 6 years old, ha ha. Anyway, I appreciate hearing Susan’s sweet thoughts about all of these beautiful gardens. Thank you, Susan, for your time & thoughts. They are recognized & appreciated ❤

Aaron and Laura, I so enjoy your daily videos! I’ve been able to learn so much from you Laura as you share your gardening with us. Aaron you are so supportive with everything she does. I do love these segments with looking at what others have created in their garden spots. Laura have such a close and loving relationship with your sweet mother. You both are lucky to be living in close proximity of both your parents. Your adorable children grow up close to their grandparents. That is such a special relationship for them to have. Thank you again for taking the time out of your busy lives to share a part of your day with us. ❤
