Swordsmachine copycats have been around for a long time, and some of them get new parts from other machines they kill, extracting weapons or any other kind of parts to improve themselves.
Shadow and Misery are two Swordsmachine copies that have been roaming hell for a long time, slowly but surely getting better and deadlier.
Shadow has most parts taken from Streetcleaners, including a flamethrower that it uses as its main weapon, while Misery has taken a rifle from a Sentry, improving its fire rate and reducing its recoil, allowing it to be used more often.
They have descended to the depths of hell since the higer layers over time have less and less things to kill to get blood and scavenge parts from. They have gained some kind of consciousness as they have been reported to leave signs of their presence, writing messages and symbols on the walls of the places they visit.
When the two machines got to the violence layer, they started to get some kind of "cult" following, with other machines considering them role models of war, an idol of blood and chaos. They took over a church the angels had and turned it into their mechanical garden, and anyone they deemed a heretic they beheaded, placed a skull on, and stabbed a sword through their head as a sign of warning to anyone else.
STRATEGY:
- Both machines are deadly on their own, and fighting both at the same time is quite the task. Focusing fire on one of them only isn't a good idea, as they improve their attack rate the more time they are not attacked.
- Their moves are very unpredictable, but they will always telegraph them as they have a bit of windup to perform attacks. This windup time can be used to deal some damage or reposition for the incoming attack.
- Because of the fact that they have parts from various machines, setting them on fire will greatly weaken their defenses, increasing the effect of any attacks dealt.
- It's not ideal to fight Misery in close range, as it has minor blood absorption capabilities, making it able to heal small amounts of health.
- Parry windows for their attacks are smaller than usual, but hitting a parry will cause them to get knocked for some time, allowing to deal more powerful attacks in a smaller amount of time.

Some fun facts about the behind the scenes of this: - It started as me just drawing Misery cause of Shadows of Misery but then it devolved alot over the course of the last month - Duv wanted me to make a second Swordsmachine which ended up being Shadow - He ended up having Shadow the Hedgehog's colour palette by accident so we rolled with it - Duv tried to put a motif from "I Am All Of Me" in here but it didn't fit sadly - Canonically Misery listens to HEALTH and Shadow listens to Hatsune Miku covers of songs Overall, this was such an awesome track to see come together. From it's humble jokeish origins to slowly devolving into more of a fully fledged concept (which we might do something with we don't fucking know lol) it's been a joy to conceptualize these two and create the art for this one. The Into The Fire motif still goes so hard 10/10 work as always my man

I actually made a shadows of misery concept as well. The shadows of misery is a private army led by King Chronos (a tyrant inspired by Yharim, Lunatic cultist and Cronus), chronos was done with all of humanity’s bs, and so he assembled a large team of machines to conquer an earthmover which worked out giving him the ability to conquer more (which he did). It all went well until the long night dawned and the earthmovers fell which gave a group of soldiers the chance to defeat chronos which they did successfully. Chronos went to the seventh layer and was crowned king (like Sisyphus and Minos) he assembled an army of hell’s finest machines and rediscovered earthmovers which heaven didn’t tolerate, thus the council sent Gabriel, but chronos managed to outsmart him by faking his demise, Gabriel fell for it but the council didn’t, so they actually went and did something (wow that’s surprising!) They locked the dead chronos up in the heavenly capitol never to be seen again (or so you think)/

Besides the secret encounters in 1-3 and 6-1 (and the dual Cerberus boss fight in 0-5), ULTRAKILL doesn’t really have a proper “dual boss” fight, so the lore/concept behind this battle is actually really interesting. Love the use of the Into the Fire motif as a callback to the very first Swordsmachine battle!

I like your terminal entry about these machines. I imagine them being like two colors in an arena that's poorly lit, so one's black and one's a brighter shade of yellow. Due to the poor lighting the black one is going to be like a ninja and you'll have to lure it out into the bright sections to deal damage, but in the darkness you can see the parry windows better (if you can track him). The yellow one can mask against the bright sections of the arena but is more aggressive and with a lot of parry windows, so bringing him into the darkness makes him easier to read. A Yin- Yang type of battle
