There's a sentence that often gets overlooked in that often-quoted piece of hidden text. "The pages of the book are blank." Between that sentence and the fact that the macabre poetry before it is written in red text, I think it's safe to conclude that V1, having picked up an empty book, was thinking to itself. Maybe it was repeating something it had heard a human say about it, or about the earthmover. Maybe we saw a glimpse into V1's mind. Musing about what it was fighting against, and what it was created to do. I guess violence left me with questions. Had V1 ever seen a gutterman before entering 7-2? Did it know about the introduction of the first autonomous war machines before idly skimming through the terminals? Maybe the violence layer was a glimpse at a world V1 had never seen, or even heard about. If we take the "each machine was created to counter the last" thing at face value, V1 was (and I know I'm not the first to propose this) built to destroy earthmovers. Its prey was a machine that, if we take its location in Hell as a hint, was considered an act of violence against God Himself. If V1 has its way, all of Hell will be slain. Empty, devoid of life. Silent and peaceful. The only thing that will remain is Heaven, perhaps the only thing that still deserves to exist. I dunno. I guess what I'm saying is that maybe this really _is_ the only way it should have ended.

It’s symbolises Hell itself. The terminal at the end of p-2 iirc is a email between the humans who realise Hell is alive and it starts communicating to them through speech. Think, the panels at the gates of the Flesh Panopticon are Hell itself. When you say “no” to the panel, it laughs and says “as if you had a choice.” The book at the earthmover is Hell taunting you. You were beautiful, like antennas to heaven.
