Garden Spiders Attacking Prey

This is a large compilation I've put together on the various techniques that the Black and Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope Aurantia) uses when attacking prey. It is pretty fascinating to watch, so try to watch the whole thing if you have the time. Thank you for watching, please like and subscribe!

Thank you for posting a video that wasn't click bait, had crappy camera work, or bad music added. This is the kind of stuff KZbin needs. Very informative as well. I enjoyed watching this very much since it shows that spiders are a bit more "intelligent" than you may think... In the sense that they can differentiate prey and act accordingly. I've watched a lot of documentaries and videos but have never come across something like this before. I really appreciate you posting this video and I learned a little bit more about spiders today. I have fed spiders prey myself in the past. Try a preying mantis, fully grown or around medium sized! You will immediately notice that the spider will wrap the mantis's claws to it's face. Spider's like: "Oh, a mantis, eh? Lemme wrap your face to your claws first!"

what is fascinating to me is the fact that at the first part, it looks as if the spider is analyzing how big the prey is and then just jump in to do the work, like it has a mind of its own

@IloveSPIDERZ, Argiope spiders and Nephila spiders are the 2 biggest and most beautiful species of orb weaver spiders in the world aka (Saint Andrew’s cross spider, garden spider, writing spider, X-Spider, silver spider, banded spider or wasp spider and golden silk orb weaver spiders). Even if they catch and kill a bird, bat, lizard, snake or a frog in their web, I would just let them suck out the juvenile mammal’s Blood out and I like the size of how big and massive these spiders are. I wouldn’t free anything that gets caught in their webs unless, the spider isn’t hungry and doesn’t want to attack then I free the bird that gets caught in their web and if it was a praying mantis or a 6 legged insect, I would free it and kill it myself.

@@samiam619 , I only kill them because I am mad at someone who tries to get on my nerves and teases me about my body height being 6 feet tall and saying that I am going to hell just because I like the number 6 and dislike the number 5 in my own opinion/personal preference. I don’t really want to kill the praying mantises and I get personally mad when people don’t know me and can’t tell the difference of how big 1 inch is and especially when they’re terrible at math. I personally like being 6 feet tall and I enjoy eating dark chocolate, black licorice and drink coffee black with no cream or sugar. I get mad very easily and I feel ashamed of myself because I personally get off topic and people just want to be bigots and kill 4 legged animals, 6 legged insects and 8 legged creatures just to be clowns. I seriously like spiders and I do realize that I fail ironically that the praying mantises help the eco system too (and they are just as important for the pest food chain). As an 6 foot tall man, I realize that humans with the height of 6 feet like a baby giraffe may get hungry very easily. And yet I know that some praying mantis species are going extinct so by law they are protected by the state animal control center and the same with European and Other species of bees on their property. The praying mantises help keep bugs and insect pest population and control just as much as the spiders do because if the spider were to win against the mantis, the spider would be obese, gain weight and die. Then, the black ants, red ants, fire ants, harvester ants, carpenter ants or velvet ants or cow killer ants would eat and prey on the spiders and mantises that die and feed their developers inside the ant hill. Sadly the praying mantises in the state of California (where I live) they only live up to 0.5 years (6 months) and then they die after the female mantis lays her egg. The biggest mantis I saw in my life experience was about 2 to 3 inches big (0.1666 feet to 0.25 feet long) and in metric it’s (5.08 centimeters to 7.62 centimeters long).

@@eugeneyang5678 if a poisonous frog gets caught the spider usually lets them go.. the frog can secrete poison on its skin and when the spider goes in for the bite, she backs off and cuts it down

Interesting. With the dragonfly, she tied its wings down to the web on her first move, to keep it from escaping. Then she had her way with it. As for the grasshopper, I noticed the spider paid particular attention to restraining the grasshopper's hind legs (which are its most powerful legs and are primarily used for jumping, but they can also kick their way free of a spider web if caught) in whatever way possible; either by letting the grasshopper fold its rear legs down(in preparation to kick) or by snaring the legs while they were still extended before the grasshopper could fold them back under & get any muscle tension built up. As for the bee, she simply wrapped it up so tightly that simply it had no chance of escaping. With the wasp, she did pretty much the same thing, but she also curled the wasp's body thus almost entirely eliminating the possibility of receiving a paralyzing/fatal sting. The deer fly was laughably easy for her. One she wrapped up, another she just ran out & grabbed with her fangs, then carried it to the center of the web.

I think they are called spinerets I believe and spiders usually have 1 but can have 4, 6, or even 8!

@A Special Poipole, yes they are called spinnerets and the silk comes out of the 1 rare hole from the spider’s bottom. In the 1 butt hole of the spider can have 2, 4, 6 or 8 spinnerets all linked together and every spinneret produces a different type and texture of silk for weaving a web, wrapping up prey, making a retreat, scaffold spiral of the web, making radiation threads of the web, making sticky spiral of the web as the spider recycles and eats the scaffold silk that is not as sticky, building a pattern at the hub or the center of the web after the whole web is done woven as a design such as the zigzag pattern, Capital Letter X pattern or electric spiral pattern that absorbs ultraviolet light to keep other animals and humans away to show that the web is visible and for laying an egg sac. Spinnerets is spelled with 2 N’s in it not 1. Spiders have an even number of spinnerets such as 2, 4, 6 and 8 all linked together in the 1 big spider’s arsehole and the spiders also have 2 eyes like most animals and humans do and even 4, 6 and 8 eyes as well. The total number of the spiders eyes, spinnerets and rest of their organs (in both male and females) are always naturally born with an even number and never an odd number.

i usually feed it with cockroaches... one time i threw a centipede in its web, the spider just set it loose and free to fall down to the ground.. i guess they dont wanna mess with the freight train of the bug world..

Hello iloveSPIDERZ and thankyou for posting this video.I have a beautiful Garden Spider outside my lounge window.Its a big guy and its only been there for a month but I have watched this spider make the biggest web I've ever seen and found a new love for spiders.I f not care for them but they move so gracefully and use such skill to spin silk cocoons to keep prey quiet til Dinner time.Silk is a gift of nature and when you watch a spider wrap up a cocoon its just so elegant. I have one of these in my kitchen window now. Amazing how she catches things that fly into her web. I have also caught a few bees and handed them to her with tweezers. I have been to afraid to hand her the food because I did not understand if she would bite or if she was poisonous. Besides that, the food I have offered her would sting me if I handled it. Thank you for the information and I have now learned how to gently pick her up if I want to handle her. I will try to post that video if I can. This whole experience is VERY, very INTERESTING!

This is what got me into spiders in the first place! These spiders won't go out of their way to bite you, but even if they do accidentally bite you, their venom doesn't after us in any significant way. I've been bit by one of these because I was holding a moth in it's web so it wouldn't escape. It was completely my fault, but nothing happened. They will, however, be very happy you are feeding them! And will usually stay in the same spot throughout most of their lives/adulthood.

Not sure how much they eat but she isn't as excited about food this pm? .I just tried to pick her up but my I guess I am not ready or she isn't cause poor thing is just "swinging" her self to intimidate me. Well they don't like to be handled. It puts them into too much panic and anxiety, and with this species, they will move somewhere else if they are bothered too much. I'm not saying you can't, but just be careful. I accidentally killed one because it fell out of my hand. (A short fall can kill them)

IloveSPIDERZ Noted and I agree. I believe I may have chased her away a few weeks before I knew all this info. She took up residence below my deck and I guess the lack of sun was not suitable of her liking and she moved back upstairs. I am SURE that this is the same girl. She is VERY happy where she is and I do not want to run her off accidentally. (Too much fun to watch) Although now i will be more comfortable hand feeding her when I can and I will not be afraid. Argiope spider's venom is one of the weakest among the orb weaver family. That's why evolution compensated them with very strong silk and they have to bite their preys many times for the paralysis to take effect.

+M Paxton there are 2 types of silk, the sticky one and the non sticky construction ones. The spider remembers which lines are which (the sticky ones are the rings, the non sticky ones are the ribs) and she doesnt step on those that shouldnt be stepped on.

+M Paxton They have this oil that they coat throughout their legs and bodies. This happens when the spider grooms itself. For the orb weaving spiders, the spokes and framework of the web is not sticky, but the spirals are. Spiders try their best to not touch the sticky spiral part by walking on the non-sticky part of the web. You can imagine how difficult this must be to do because the spiders cannot see their own webs they make.

Are you sure they were spider bites? Everyone likes to blame spiders for every abnormal reaction on the skin, but chances are slim to none that they actually are spider bites.

A bite by Argiope aurantia is comparable to a bee sting with redness and swelling. For a healthy adult, a bite is not considered an issue. Though these spiders are not aggressive, people who are very young, elderly, or who have compromised immune systems should exercise caution, just as they would around a beehive or a hornet nest.

A few reasons... Main reason I think is because they ready their front 4 legs to run towards the prey (I don't think orb weavers can run backwards). Other reasons is because not all insects are edible to them; (I think fireflies are poisonous to them). These are just my direct observations. The Argiope spiders are known to have poor eyesight, but I don't know the science behind how they figured that out.

It's so satisfying when the spider kills a grasshopper. I hate those crop eaters and would feed those to any spider around my house.
