I’m in NC. We had a late freeze in mid-May 2020. I lost several tomato and pepper plants. That was the latest I’ve ever known us to have a freeze. Truly weird. The weather makes gardening quite a challenge. I’m always thankful for what survives and thrives. ❤️ your high tunnel! 👍🏽

I was out walking when I came across an old man working his allotment. Seeing I wasn't in any particular hurry to be anywhere I stopped and struck up a conversation. After the usual pleasantries he explained he was collecting seeds for the following year. This sparked my attention and imagination. Seeds aren't a huge cost but many packets over the years soon adds up. I spent the rest of the day helping him but most of all learning from the wisest person I've ever met. That was nearly 30 years ago and I'm proud to say the amount of seeds I've bought since can be counted on one hand(maybe 2). It's not rocket science. We wash seed down the drain or just discard into the trash every day and then go and buy more.

Great garden! my grandma used to put all late fall harvested green tomatoes in boxes lined with newspaper and thick blankets or even winter coats. they will ripen in a while and we would have our red tomatoes until late fall, the only thing that they will not be as sweet as those naturally picked ripe. cheers from toronto

I had a wood stove in my large greenhouse this past winter. It became a real pain to trudge down there every night at midnight to add more wood. But I did it (the things we do for our gardens 😂). But it didn’t heat it as well as I would have liked. For this next winter I have already replaced the wood stove with a pellet stove. It self feeds itself and I can set the temperature I want. Everything looks great in your gardens!

Garden is looking good. I’m sure the squash will recover eventually. In our northern climates, those greenhouses make all the difference.

Little Mountain Ranch that’s a good question, will much depend on who you ask. Pandemic stay at home orders were not that bad but I think many small businesses are not going to come back. These times are so unprecedented that I look at it as opportunity in chaos. Too many decided to sit back and watch and be angry with the government. The level of misinformation, distrust in science and believe in conspiracies makes me question the sanity of even educated people. Reopening is relatively smooth. You ask them to take one cookie each and they take four, biggest challenge now is keeping people from the south out and limiting people from going on vacation down there. Personally I do expect a strong second wave in fall/winter and gear up to be prepared for a second round of shut down orders. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. Luckily if the second wave is mild, all my preparations are technologically something that I would be doing in the future anyway, so it’s simply a reorder of priorities. That one week with the protests/rioting and the resulting nighttime curfew - all a first in my personal experience - was interesting. I was pretty much every night within a block of protests and riots until the curfew was implemented. Not my favorite place to be, I can tell you that much. But business was booming, so one has to do what’s necessary. In the end, unharmed, un damaged and still made great revenue, so happy with it. But one place i don’t want to be again, unarmed, is anyplace near an angry mob. My count down to move is on though. 2 years, 10 months. Can’t wait to get out of here. I’m trying to stay safe, I hope you do the same :)

I have thought about you for the last two weeks thinking any day now! However totally knowing how crazy busy you must be and so we see. Amazing, no idea how you do it. We also out east have had a very cold start late frosts and now we are blistering hot. Just went so long without rain but tonight finally it is. And so the same lost a few things, some things just still very slow but lots starting to thrive and very exciting. I harvested my garlic scapes tonight which is early but the garlic speeding ahead in this weather. My squash also was seeming to take forever, but last few days it just has taken off. So I am hoping too. I learn so much from you. I had no idea about clipping the onions. This is the first year I have tried big onions. I usually do multipliers but have more garden space this year so trying regular. And your high tunnel is rocking no wonder you are so excited. I am too! Its amazing. 💝💝💝 So glad you are healthy, safe and productive! Your gardens look GREAT! I have never grown parsnips - but my friend Arianne does. I have been going to her ranch every week to help her weed and get in some (appropriately distanced) socializing. She showed me how a teeny tiny piece of parsnip root can turn into a whole plant! She has a bed that was planted with parsnips 3 years ago, and just keeps giving and giving. It helps that she harvests as needed (we are in Zone 8, so that might not be possible for you). Same with garlic and potatoes. At harvest time - replant the biggest garlic cloves and one potato per pulled plant. I had a bed of Asian greens (pac choi , tatsoi, gai lan, etc.) that I let bolt every year. It's going on it's 4th year BUT I made the mistake of planting arugula/rocket in that same bed. The arugula is slowly taking over. This fall I will clear out everything and (I hope) start over with just the Asian Brassicas that are inter-planted with various flower bulbs. So glad to see you!

I left some new kuroda carrots in my garden to see if I can save seeds from them next year. I want to save beet seeds which I'll try to do in 2023 for 2024. If your subscriber numbers keep going like they are, it'll be at 100,000 in no time. I'm so happy for you!!! Have an awesome day.

Elderberrysirup is great but what we like even better is a sirup made from the elder flowers. This year I made the yummiest elderflowersirup and jelly. I can highly recommend that! Great garden! I also like letting my plants self-seed they are always seeding themselves in the best spots for them to grow. Nice greetings from Germany!

My kittens really like watching you on KZbin! For some reason they find you in particular, very fascinating! Must be all those plants, plus the bun in your hair might remind them of mine. I have heard that some greens will bolt not so much from heat, but AFTER cold, so I guess, after just a large temperature difference. Your greenhouse looks amazing, I can't imagine having 150 pepper plants, I feel lucky to have 15!.

You've been missed!! I've been experiencing slow growth in my (tiny) garden too. Then a racoon came and dug everything up one night. Ugh! Oh well. A few little things survived. I've been so busy with work that I haven't had a chance to get my luffa starts in the ground. I'm starting to think it's for the best. Cool weather and pesky racoons would certainly have decimated them. Still hopeful for a harvest in the fall. Welcome back! Looking forward to more tours and news.

Chelsea, many (if not all) peppers are tender perennials. They _may_ live through your winter to produce again next year if you keep them from freezing; they don't like the cold at all, though. Same thing with indeterminate tomatoes.

You were talking about the Basil, when you harvest will you let 'me' know what all you do with the different varieties and how they taste. I don't hear about that much. Oh and don't forget about drying your herbs in paper bags in the car, for free. About your peppers, I just heard that you aren't supposed to plant hot and sweet together (which I did) because all seeds will be hot. Have you heard that? If not, I will let you know next yr if it's true..LOL!!

What a wonderful video! You’re doing amazing with your garden, I love how excited you are with your babies(all the plants you grew from seed!)! Your greenhouse is beautiful. I have a pretty big one, too. Last year I grew tomatoes and peppers in mine, but it got so hot, they didn’t set fruit very well and languished, also, in the heat. I had a shade cloth and big fans, as well as the sides rolled up, but it didn’t work well for me. Maybe it just gets too hot here, or maybe I planted them too late. I’ll try again next year. I didn’t plant a garden this year. I love following along with yours. Thanks for giving Rachel and Todd a shout out. She is one of my other favorite gardeners on KZbin.

Mmmmm....fresh salsa verde! I see some enchiladas in your future. I started growing tomatillos in my teens in Calgary some 25 years ago, I think we just fried them like green tomatoes our first harvest lol...but after a little old fashion book research I figured out what to do with them. Living Traditions homestead has a great green tomato salsa verde that you can can if you end up with more than expected. Garden looks great Chelsea, we’re having cooler temps than usual and a lot more rain here in Texas making for an unusual season as well. Stay blessed.

Hi Chelsea, glad you are back. I started to worry but I can understand when you are so busy. The garden looks great. Also in Scotland we had late frost after our last frost date, but what was worse is that we had a storm that damaged a lot of my potatoes that I start off early in yoghurts pots so the foliage was quite tall. I have already harvested a few buckets. They are all in 10 liter and 30 liter buckets. I am growing cucamelon for the first time in my greenhouse and it is full of mini fruits. They look like mini watermelons and apparently taste like lemony cucumber and they are the size of a big olive. Nice for snacking and pickling. I have been drying last year a lot of green onion. This year I was sold mushroom compost that had not been sterilised and a get lots of white button mushrooms all over my pots and beds, so I have been drying them a lot. Do you grow sweet potato or is it too cold. I grow it in my greenhouse. I am going to look for this kale type as I love kale. Have you ever grown Asturion tree cabbage? Very tasty and gets tall and you can keep harvesting leaves. I hope to see a lot more videos from you. Eveline in Scotland

I collect the pruned tomatoe leaves in a bucket, add water and let them sit in the greenhouse maybe for a week. Makse amazing natural fertilizer! Smell is awful but manageable :)

We grow all of our own hay, don’t use anything on it and thankfully the ranch the is beside us is also organic so no overspray.

I would think you could run the exhaust all the way down one side under some cob mass that would help hold the heat. Thanks for the update.

Hi Chelsea - beautiful video - thank you for sharing your garden. Question about peppers - you said they are very sensitive to overwatering. I'm pretty sure that is what I am doing to my poor plants. How often do you water them? Looking forward to more of your videos!

I wait until the ground is dry an inch or so down and only water lightly every few days. It seems to be the deep watering they aren’t fond of. I’m just figuring it out though so let me get back to you in a few weeks.

Yes, they are blue. You can’t eat the berries raw, they need to be cooked down as far as I understand.

Comfrey is no longer sold in the US except in creams and lotions. I believe it's no longer sold in Canada either. It has cancer-causing agents. So how is it good for the soil where your food is? I made my first elderberry syrup last summer too. My broccoli heads looked like that when they first started forming. Mine are getting big now. Are you worried that they other plants won't make heads or that the heads will stay small? Have patient. They will get bigger if your weather has warmed up some. and they others should form heads. Just keep the roots cool. My garden is doing just like yours. We also have had a very wet cold spring. I have never cut the tops off my onions. I saw Rachael's video too. Very interesting but I have never done any of that that she does nor heard of it before and I get big onions every year.

Hey there, thank you for your comment. As far as I’m aware, I’m Canada at least Comfrey seeds and plants are able to be sold, but anything containing comfrey is banned. It is quite controversial and up for debate as far as the dangers of it. I use it for a fertilizer so I’m not concerned. Thanks again for your thoughts!😊

The arbor was up in the main yard by the house and looked handmade. Borage grows really well up here.

Another use for your onion tops! The French-Canadian Herbs Salees (“herb sallay”) is such a great thing to have in the fridge to add depth to stocks/soups/stews, savory pies, sauces and casseroles. Alternate Ayers of chopped green onions in a jar with kosher salt to the top. This will preserve the flavor and color of green onions. The salt will liquify over time. I store them in the fridge - a jar or two will last you a year because it can be used very sparingly. It is a staple for me since learning of it last year. You can use any combination of herbs, but the way I was taught by a quebecoise grandma was just to use green onions and I love the simplicity and universal uses for it. www.thespruceeats.com/quebec-style-herbes-salees-recipe-1805693

It really is so great to see you again . FYI we are heading in to a solar minimum which means we are going to have much cooler weather for the next several years.
