Welcome to the September Garden Tour. Garden is located close to Toronto and is a Zone 6a/6b or Zone 5 using the Canadian and USDA Hardiness zones.
I'm sharing plant choices, costs, best value for your dollars and tips. Come see all the plants that are still vibrant at the end of September.
Filmed on the global climate day, it is a great example of how you can create environments that can help be the lungs of the earth.

I agree about the removal of trees. I've watched so many old tress in my neighbourhood come down so that houses can be built on end remaining piece of land. I've planted so many native trees on my property to try and restore native habitat. I have also dedicated an area for milkweed for the monarchs. It has been very rewarding watching different species of birds and butterflies visit my yard.

I am an advocate for trees on earth. Our back yard is adjacent to green belt. My neighbor has been clearing the green belt (belong to government) for domestic farming of his own use. Besides planting for their own consumption, they plant whatever they like. They don't think what good for the birds and bees. They are from mainland China and have no concept of coexistence with other species on this earth. I am so sad looking out from my kitchen window. You have done such good job to provide sanctuary for birds and insects besides providing a place to relax for yourself

I purchased two hanging baskets this year from the Amish and they were beautiful all season long until Frost. I ended up deconstructing them and pouring the potting mix out in hopes to save the containers and what I found in the bottom of the container was a baby diaper, when researching I guess the baby diaper helps keeping the moisture in .

I feel your pain at the loss of the trees. I live in a small farm town, we use to be the "young kids on the block" but 40 years later, we are the older ones. So many younger people around us have cut down all the beautiful trees that use to line our street. Guess they don't want to have to rake the leaves. Luckily we have some pretty trees on our lot as do the couple behind us. When we sit on our deck and look up our backyard to theirs, it looks like a park. People just don't understand how valuable good trees are.
@JoAnnBlondin

Thanks for taking the tour, Elaine. I totally appreciate your comments. The trees are part of the beauty of a property. When I took landscape design, we learned to start with the trees and shrubs as they are the backdrop to the landscaped. They provide privacy, windbreaks and shade. A vital part of a well-designed garden as long as they are healthy. Enjoy sitting on your deck and the view of your trees.

Love your beautiful garden! Plan to use Vista petunias in my garden next year. Very alarmed to see the milkweed plants. I understand the desire to help the butterfly’s, but common milkweed is a thug. Not enough to control the seed. This milkweed will spread by runners underground and take over rapidly. Becomes very difficult to remove. There are several milkweeds that make better garden plants, starting with swamp milkweed. This variety has beautiful pink flowers too.
@JoAnnBlondin
@JoAnnBlondin 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Constance. Thank you so much for your comment on the Common Milkweed. I did some additional research, and yes, the spreading is a challenge. Yikes. I had no idea, and I'm very grateful for your insights. In Ontario, here are the varieties that are recommended to help Monarch Butterflies. Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa) Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) Antelope-horns Milkweed (Asclepias asperula) Purple Milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens) I see that Swamp Milkweed is on the list, so I will look to replace the Common variety with it. Thanks for sharing your garden knowledge. It's how we all grow together. Happy gardening.

Thank you so much for all the tips. I love mandevilla plants--have about 8 in my garden in various colors. I never thought of putting a climbing mandevilla into a big pot of other mounding flowers.
