Garden Tours, Creative Residencies, Membership & Flock Community Programs - Ep. 229

Renovations have been keeping us busy, but we've been brainstorming some future community programs that we'd like to trial at Flock including garden tours and residencies, which I'd like to tell you more about. Just joined! My partner and I have 5.5 acres that we bought a few years ago that we will be building our own home on soon. We've been tearing out invasives and planting trees in the meantime, and this channel has been an inspiration!

We think so too. We have other ideas, but they are too far off in the distance to even consider at this stage. We feel we can really get our arms around residencies, garden tours, and volunteer days at this stage. Thanks for listening.

Garden tours yay I wish I was in the U.S I would totally come. And I love the creative residency idea. It looks like a writer's haven, an artists getaway and a horticulturalists dream. I wish I could help on volunteer days and bring sandwiches for everyone to share in the meadows, invite the apple ladies stall and the pizza oven guy and the guy with the salami from the farm episode, bring our kids along to get stuck in working with the land, so many educational opportunities. The ideas are endless in the creative space. I am so happy to hear all this. I'll be here watching it all unfold. Blessings to all at Flock. Thank you

Im a musician who works a lot with electronic music, but with a heavy focus on nature samples that I take out in the field. I love the idea of working the land during the day and letting it inspire me to create music about the experience at flock. Not sure if it’s totally aligned with the mission, but it would be such a wonderful inspiration ❤

We had a couple musicians write in with a similar suggestion; we love the idea. Are there any particular considerations that you as a musician feel as if you may need if you were to do a Residency here?

@@FlockFingerLakes I think it largely depends on the artist and how they personally work! A private space where we can make noise is pretty crucial. I know most musicians don't need a complex setup, just access to electricity (not what the accommodations would entail, but just thinking that a rustic cabin environment with no electric hookups could be a challenge). Otherwise I'm sure musicians can bring whatever portable setup they have. Hope that helps, and I hope that I can do a residency with y'all someday!

Wow, all of this sounds incredible. I'm a grad student of ecological design (bachelor's is theatre arts), graduating June 2024 and I would jump on an application to those collaborative ecology residences. Once I'm out of school and employed I'll join!

Hey, I don't recall seeing BIPoC persons in your videos. Can you cover your strategies to ensure human diversity in the FLOCK?

The flock is a group of couple friends that bought this land together and are renovating it. It's mostly them showing up in the videos, and other local farmers etc I am guessing it just reflects the makeup of the land. On her other channel, summer was sometimes doing home/houseplant tours in the NY city area, and those were obviously more diverse due to the location.

It is my understanding that Joey and Kia (the 3rd and 4th) most prominent members of the flock are people of color. I might be assuming Joey is but Summer mentions in this video that Kia is/has Ethiopian ethnic ties. Joey might just be Italian. You can see them both in the Happy New Year Video.

I would hope that folks of any ethnicity who enjoy in-person garden tours; or would be interested in participating in a Residency; or volunteering, would consider the programs we outlined here. Considering, however, that all of us who are a part of Flock come from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds and have a diverse friend and professional group amongst the four (well, now 5 👶🏽) of us-I'd say it's more likely we'll be able to attract more diverse folks and diverse interests even despite the fact that we are building Flock in a very rural area-away from most of our core crew.

We'd encourage you to listen to the full video. Public programs are covered in over 2/3 of the video, including garden tours, residencies, and volunteer days. Not everyone watching this channel will have a primer on what we're doing or how this was established, so we definitely felt it important to do a recap upfront for those folks.
