Love, love the video with raised beds. I had 5 raised beds built back in Jan of this year, they are high and have a seating edge on them. I am 70 years old with a bad back and knees. I needed something that I can manage on my own. I couldn't wait to plant in them. Already have lettuce, spinach, onions, kale, carrots, beets, potatoes, planted here in zone 6b. They are up and growing. I also plan flowers for this area and have them started in winter sowed jugs. You have inspired me to get my yard, raised garden and chicken coop all spruced up and boy am I enjoying it. I am blessed as well as encouraged by all your videos with your precious family. You work hard, but living the good life. Blessings to you.

Just a FYI about deer pressure...I spray diluted Liquid Fence on all my hostas and other veggie plants - any plant - that deer and rabbits like to feast on. Liquid Fence works! The initial 'odor' to the human nose fades in less then a day and I've found lasts as a foliar coating for about a month. If a rain fall occurs close to the end of that time frame, I'm out spraying again because I swear every critter within a mile radius knows my location. Liquid Fence is human safe. Hope this helps. Cheers to a great 2022 growing season!

How gracious of you to acknowledge all of the submissions, including the ones that didn't make it into the videos. I was a Miss Pouty Pants for a few days after not seeing mine in the first one. It took me over two hours to enter, taking terrible pictures, struggling with the "how to" of converting photo files, and wrestling with the description. We had just put down our beloved kitty and so there were some tears when scrolling by her photos, looking for earlier shots of my raggedy-log raised bed. And while I didn't make it into this second edition either, now I'm grateful, because as you mentioned, there's a mess in the background! Mole-ravaged lawn and layers of gardening clutter on the back patio that has nowhere to go off-season - oh, my. I'm so thankful that you're making these videos, that you're sharing your subscribers' beautiful and inspiring creations, and for your beautiful remarks for each and every one. At 6:54, the person says that they put lumber and sticks and the water flowed right throught. Its because you're supposed to use wood that is a few years old, has been exposed to the elements and starting to decompose ("healthy" wood is way too hard to absorb water). So, you put your bigger pieces at the bottom and going up you add smaller and smaller branches until it's small twigs. Then you put leaves, whatever material you have like lawn clippings etc, then you add your final layer: compost or raised bed mix or topsoil or whatever soil you choose to use. And don't forget mulch 😉 ! For dry climates, it works best as an inground bed, with the top level flush to the ground level. That way water doesn't evaporates as much (no sides that dry faster than the center) and when it rains water flows in and rehydrates the land In wet climates you're trying to have water drain as quickly as possible so raised beds make sense but in dry climate you're trying to absorb/retain as much water into the soil as possible as the rain is so scarce that when it really pours it runs off because the soil is too dry to absorb it. That is one of the causes of flash floods... Sorry for the rant, i love this stuff 😅

Laura, I have you to thank for a super fun weekend in the garden. We were going to hire someone to move a pile of dirt, but after seeing you work with large equipment in so many videos, I decided if we rented an excavator for a week I could take my time figuring it out and if all I did was fill my garden beds, we would end up ahead. I was super nervous to get started, but with my husbands encouragement I hopped on… five hours later I had my three garden beds filled and my driveway clear for the first time in 9 months!! We plowed through two more large projects today and I still have five days left on the rental 😆

How lovely to see all these beautiful gardens. Thank you for sharing. We are in the middle of filling our raised beds which have been made from blocks and we are cladding them with slate, so they are quite formal. Not growing veg but just the usual shrubs, small trees etc. We can’t grow in the ground as our garden has pipes running below it so we’ve had to get creative. One great bonus is that anything we put in already has height which feels amazing, especially as we can be a bit overlooked on our street.

The raised bed using stones starting at 12:21 is spectacular. We're dealing with mostly limestone with very little clay that passes for soil in our area of Central Texas. Of course, the home builder mixed in a small amount of organic material and then slapped Bermuda grass over the top. Ugh! The backyard is all Bermuda in an area of 70' wide by 32' back fence to patio, but it slopes a bit (downward from back fence to patio). We just want to grow some shrubs and perennials in the backyard, but even from planning it is daunting.
