Man, I lived in NC for twenty years, and the people there always said, "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes, it'll change." Though if I woke up and it was sunny, it'd probably stay sunny. If not, the change would come pretty slow. Now having just moved to the southern tip of Ohio, this statement is truer than ever; one minute it's sunny, seventy degrees, the next, it's dark and there's a wind storm. Five minutes later it's snowing, and then in twenty minutes we're back to seventy and sunny. I just can't adapt, may have to go into hibernation/torpor. 💀

I could never wrap my head around the plans, drawings and pictures I would see in SO many gardening books I checked out from the library. It was your tours and walking around saying the name & how each plant grew and how it looked in your flower bed & how to plant it - that is what lit up my brain and how I learned how to do SO many things!! You guys have literally changed my life and given me a hobby that I always wanted to learn but could never figure out. Yes please don’t haggle at a garden center 😂 We work too hard to drop prices like people think we should. If people ask for cuttings I sometimes will just charge a small fee. Last year I sold rooted cuttings I hadn’t had time to plant up. Cuttings I buy though are not as cheap as people might think.
@Debbie33602 жыл бұрын
Most people have no concept of pricing, markup & costs real & indirect and how it differs across products. Mom worked for food distribution & if day butter was short coded the discount was only 2 cents a pound. But when people see an top in a store and 6 wks later it’s more than 1/2 off people have unrealistic expectations.
@dianequist8352 жыл бұрын
People are going to complain regardless, whether it be silently or out loud. A grocery store is not going to sell you $6 a dozen eggs for $2.50 just because you want them to. A garden center, or any retail store, has a price set for a reason. You don't like price? Shop somewhere else. But don't haggle! It's rude. Customers do not know the background details.
@janicebrowningaquino7922 жыл бұрын
Frankly I’ve never heard of such a thing-WHAT are people thinking?
@roxiegraham85212 жыл бұрын
I agree, please don't haggle about price at the garden center. As a garden center person I have had to deal with this multiple times. When I first started working I agreed that some of the prices seemed high, but once I was the person in charge of ordering and pricing I saw what my employer was paying to order in plants and how little they were actually marking up the plants I realized our plants weren't over priced at all, we were actually hurting ourselves sometimes. The other thing I noticed at our garden center was that the people who haggled the most were those who could afford it without haggling about price! I would give them the lowest amount of discount (10%) that we are authorized to give without higher permission. There are some people who got better discounts, but a lot had to do with how much they bought and their personality (they weren't pushy about the price but we're buying 5 or more). Sadly, the company I have worked for the the last 10+ years has recently announced they are closing the business this year. We are in a fairly rural area so there aren't many year round garden centers close by who have the plant knowledge that they were known for. The next few months are a puzzle for myself, as I decide what my next step is. Love watching the recap on Sunday!

I learned that a landscape design is a dynamic art form - a moving target, truly. I am a graphic artist and an avid gardener, and designed my own front yard 6 years ago. A "finished" design to work from is totally exciting, BUT I didn't realize how fast it begins to change. Year one was a delight, a blank slate full if mostly immature cuties. Before year two, very few of my chosen shrubs and perennials behaved, or totally thrilled. In a nutshell, after 6 years I realized a planned design eventually becomes more like corralling kittens, and from the beginning I wish I would have grasped that the first plan is only the first of several plans. Some plants grow larger, crooked, or smaller for whatever reasons, some plants just didn't "do it" for me after a few years. Some plants, shaded by the plant next to it didn't grow at the same pace as its matching plant 10 feet over. Moles AND Voles moved in after 2 years, used my first planting as Disneyland, so I dug UP many of my favs, and replanted after my new exterminator closed Disneyland. Then came unexpected soil erosion and sinking. Dug up and replanted more plants. Some didn't make it. Which in some cases allowed me to plant less desirable vole treats. Point is, no matter the reason, I learned that a garden design is always a moving target. A design at the onset helps, but you HAVE to be willing to roll with a lot of changes in the first few years, especially if you start from a blank slate. I get why Laura doesn't want to create designs, because if you're trying so hard to stick with a design without being open to alterations or failures, esp in the first few years, the original design becomes disappointing. Even though Laura would probably create an awesome first design.😉 Speaking of that, would love to see how the landscape's coming along at your friend's new house!

We had several fields that were 80 acres so I had to laugh when you talked about not being able to invision what 90 acres would look like! I knew exactly how big that is! Love you and your family!

I'm Midwest too and that 90 acres is quite small to us. It would be like a "half section" acreage. But I can see where it would seem large to them.

🪑🪛 I am surprised to hear that you get flustered putting furniture together Laura. You seem so handy. I remember a lot of your earlier videos of you building things... I was so impressed with that.

Good morning from Cheyenne WY where we finally have some snow without 30 mph winds! Love the banter between you two!

I made the fodder! I’ve been cutting mine like cutting grass, and giving it to them in piles of cut wheat grass, keeping the tray under lights to continue growing. Love this, thanks!!

I noticed better consistency in greenhouse temps when I added a few oscillating fans to keep the air moving. If you have stagnant air, the temp by the thermostat will not be the same as the other end of the structure. Just an idea because I havent seen wall mount fans in yours, just the one sitting on the ground.

A little tip for your glass shower. First you'll need to use dish soap and vinegar and a soft steel wool to remove the hard water deposit. Then just get ya a dollar store squeegee. Every time you use the shower immediately squeegee it down before you get out. I did this when we were getting ready to sell our house and it kept that shower clear of water spots etc for a year before we listed the house and all through showings. Works like a charm.

So funny! “I think I’d enjoy snowblowing. … for about a month”. Yup. Kinda how we feel up here in the snow capital. (Ottawa). If only wishing it made it true. Haha. One advantage we DO have in the summer , is longer days than southerners have. Apparently gardeners in the far north, with their almost 24 hours a day of sunshine, have great success, because things grow faster. ( thinking of a video I saw of a garden filled with shoulder high dahlias)

Aaron - Here's how you can keep from having to wipe down your glass shower enclosure. We have really hard water too and I was so tired of the squeegee or towel and having to wipe them down every time we showered. Get a decent sized spray bottle. Fill with 50% vinegar, 25% Dawn dish soap, & 25% water. Shake well to mix. At the end of my shower just before I'm ready to dry off I spray the shower enclosure and tile walls. Then I let it sit for about a minute while I towel off. Then before I leave the shower, I gently spray cool water on all the surfaces I've sprayed with the vinegar mix. (You need a hand held shower head to make this work.). It's important that you don't over rinse because you want enough of the vinegar mixture to remain so that you create a sheeting action as the water rinses the cleaning mix. You make sure it's cool water you rinse with to keep the condensation from re-forming, which is what you're trying to shower off. I learned this somewhere on KZbin and it's been amazing! I haven't had to wipe down the shower since I found this tip. It also leaves the fixtures looking great, and spot free.

I would love to see a video of this dry forest you speak of LOL. Seriously though I do think it would be a great idea and many would be interested. If not, blame me!

Regarding doing start to finish plant videos, I have always been able to find the exact videos you have done when you start a project because your videos are tagged with such excellent key words that when I run searches they are super easy to find. Thank you for taking that extra time to add keywords for searches when you post your videos.

I manage a garden centre and the rule of thumb for taking cuttings off the floor etc is this: if you ask if you can take it, I will always say yes, please do. But don’t just assume that you can without asking. 🙃

Squeegee for your glass shower, game changer. Just found out, cleaned my whole kitchen I was so excited, that Dawn and Mr clean white sponges (I forget there name) cleans 99.9% of crude off anything! Stove, oven, microwave, shower, shower doors . . . . . . .

I question whether or not Garden Answer will “fall apart “ any time soon. But, Aaron has my vote for learning how to navigate any program having to do with landscape design/redesign. Aaron is a problem solver by nature and would excel at it. My opinion, for what it’s worth… 😊

I live in Northern MICHIGAN. The Upper Peninsula. Don't we have bugs and weather problems in every state. You learn to go native. Learn what you can grow and what you simply can not. Be adaptable. Live wisely and enjoy daily.

If you had 90 acres, I think it would look like Martha Stewart's farm/garden. It does remind me of your property. Amazing!
