Horse Chestnut Tree - Aesculus hippocastanum - Is it edible?

Aesculus hippocastanum or European Horsechestnut is a large flowering tree that is a handsome element in the landscape and striking when in bloom, covered with large flowering panicles. The fruit or "conkers" of the Horse Chestnut or Conker Tree is slightly poisonous and not at all edible. See a beautiful mature specimen on the Yale University campus in New Haven, Connecticut.

While the Horse Chestnut is considered inedible, it is also highly medicinal, being one of the best things used for poor venous function & venous insufficiency.

We've had a lot of horse chestnuts this year in Ireland, they germinate quite easily too. They have a beautiful polished look. They're good for dying wool supposedly. Nice earthy color.

You know what's interesting? I'm 64 and I remember throwing sticks into a chestnut tree as a boy. I thought "Let me type it in." and of course I found a video. I haven't seen a chestnut tree for a very long time and I wanted to know 'why' the nuts were inedible. Thanks for the video.

Well they're not edible for humans. Squirrels also tend to eat mushrooms that are poisonous to humans, but they're totally unaffected by the poison.

The horse chestnut is definitely edible yedible yes some people have side effects but that would be the same as saying peanut you can't eat you can't eat because some people have side effects
