Welcome back! You were sorely missed. There is the joke of the vicar who saw a gardener weeding in a fantastic garden. 'You and God have done great things with that plot!' he said. The Gardener squinted back and said 'You should have seen it when he had it to himself!'

Hey Tony, I like how you've shown the positive side also to when your home food garden or allotment gets neglected (for whatever reasons) because it's so true that despite the losses many things still grow well and everything can be regrown often rather quickly because you already have a good base. Hey Tony. I live in Adelaide, South Australia. My Mum died recently after six weeks in hospital. I had to return to the UK for her funeral. In total I was away from my garden for seven weeks. When I returned and saw the state of my garden I almost cried. It was three foot high in weeds and I thought all my precious veggies were ruined. It was a terribly depressing feeling. But, I put an ad online for a gardener/handyman to help me tackle the weeds - I just couldn't face it alone. After just one whole day of weeding I could see my garden beds again, and after a couple more days I was almost back in control! I completely filled all six of my rotary compost bins with weeds, plus another compost bin 3m long by 2m wide about 1.5m high - there were just so many weeds! Under all the weeds, I found my celery had survived, my garlic and onions were huge, I gathered a big bucket full of potatoes, and my leeks were as thick as my forearm. Sure, I lost lettuce and some of my broccoli and cauliflower had bolted, but overall my garden has survived the winter, and I'm now busy preparing Spring beds for seedlings once the weather warms. Thank you so much for posting this video and giving others who have had to abandon their garden new hope. It really touched a chord with me! It was well-needed. There are many reasons keen gardeners have to suddenly abandon their gardens, and it's so worth remembering that Mother Nature will always forgive you and welcome you back, with no need for guilt or explanation. Your honesty in filming the neglect is really appreciated - and your message of hope and 'never give up' is really heart-warming and welcome. I hope your personal life gets better from here on. Grateful thanks and big hugs from a fellow gardener Down Under. Cate xxx

Hi Cate. Thanks for such a great comment I really appreciate that. I am so sorry that you have had such a loss losing loved ones is always hard let alone your mum. I am so glad that most of your garden, like mine, survived but it shows you must have great quality soil. It is my guess you feed your soil well. Your summer is just around the corner busy times coming for you guys there. Thanks so much and I am really glad you got the idea behind this video so perfectly because you nailed it and it was exactly how I wanted it percieved

Yes, I got it Tony, which is why I commented immediately! Thanks for your reply. I'm in my late 50's now, and I've been gardening since I was a child. I come from 3 generations of British gardeners - my Grandad grew vegetables in Hertfordshire during the war to help feed kids evacuated from London bombings. My parents had an allotment near their Herefordshire home until their late 70's. But all their gardening knowledge is lost now with their passing - except for me! All that wisdom of generations of gardeners is now in my hands for me to pass on. Do you realise this is one reason why your videos are so important and serve a bigger purpose? You are passing on your knowledge in a form that can be accessed and seen by millions of people. Something to think about, eh? Cheers, Cate

@@catecook7819 People don't realise how much their videos can affect someone. but back in March, I received an email from an x serviceman who was discharged medically due to mental trauma due to the things he had to do and saw. He wrote that he had nearly destroyed his marriage and drove away from his children due to the stress, even considered taking his own life. One day one of my videos popped up on his home page and he watched it. He went on to explain that he binged watched my channel and then put his name down for an allotment, He got a plot and started to implement what he was learning on my channel. He rebuilt his relationship with his children and wife and they are a loving family again, He said if it wasn't for my videos he wouldn't be here today and his children would have lost a father. Later he entered his local shows and won first prize in 16 categories. He really went to town with it and having something else to focus on he said he was able to deal with his demons. That really hit home that to me its just a video I do to help people, but until then I had no idea just how much they can impact people's lives.

Hi, I really wanted to comment on this video in particular. I can safely say ive quite literally watched hundreds upon hundreds of gardening videos and this is by far certainly one of the best ive watched. Every gardener as you say in the video mostly show how to do this and how to do that and you never really get to see the major fails. This video was a great example that whatever life throws at you priorities in life change from here to there and as you say gardens can suffer. I am a very keen small garden raised beds grower and ive had a very successful first year however i have been in my garden constantly every day and sometimes for the whole day. There was a day that id not attended my garden and it was very wet and windy and prior to this i was looking at my tomatoes thinking they were supported enough however this was certainly not the case and they were all flattened by the wind. Luckily i was able to save them and they are fine again but it felt like just by blinking i was caught out. So the point im trying to make after this big comment is i really want to thank you for making this video and opening up about your garden and it had a very nice personal touch on personal life and gardening. you have an amazing garden and it looks awesome. For me if i had come across my garden with all those weeds it woulod be an opportunity for me to get excited by knowing i have plenty to get on with even if it is weeding as i enjoy doing all aspects of gardening. I read a few comments prior to this and one person makes an exellent point, you are certainly gonna have some good material for a very healthy compost heap and also now youve weeded everything i guess you could say its like hitting a big reset button. I wish you all the best and good luck for the fall and winter growing season. keep your videos coming and thanks again. Adrian

"Question of the day" answer: Hi Tony, I got some comfort from this video which shows that even an experienced gardener like you can have a bad summer, albeit for reasons beyond your control. This summer was my first as a veg gardener and a great deal of my efforts were thwarted by birds (of my berries I got to taste not a single one), my cavolo nero was destroyed by cabbage white caterpillars and my squash and courgette plants were eaten by slugs. On the upside a decent-ish harvest of spuds and cut-and-come-again spinach, the beetroot was fantastic and the french beans were late in getting going but pretty OK. My lessons: check on the garden more regularly in the growing season, stake more things against the winds (I lost some berry plants to storms as well as birds) and take preventative measures (nets, nematodes, stakes etc.) against those competing for my crops! I'm sure we'll both bounce back and good luck with whatever crosswinds you're dealing with.

Yes! Honesty! A real garden, with a real gardener and this is what happens sometimes. I hope the personal stuff that was going on is something you can handle and that it hasn't knocked you sideways. Life is a priority, and sometimes things like the garden have to take a back seat. Quite rightly. The first few years after our daughter was born this happened to us as we were so sleep deprived and she was an expert at finding any and all dangerous things in the garden! Lol now she's three, sleeping better, and a *little* less accident prone and really wanting to be involved, so we've got back on top of it and had our first semi successful year growing in this garden. Some failures, some successes, lots of lessons learnt for next year. Our tomatoes have faced numerous challenges, including having all of their support canes snapping during that storm a few weeks back. I battled wind and rain for an hour the next day to get them up again, and they are doing fine, thankfully :)

Look what you've accomplished in one day with honest hard work and dedication! And you have more produce than you thought at first glance. Yay! I just have 2 small gardens with a dozen tomato plants, various. greens, 4 blueberry bushes, some beans, a few strawberries, various herbs, squash, chard, a raised bed made from a pallet with potatoes and more herbs, and a variety of flowering shrubs...5 rhododendrums and quite a number of flowers. We're doing pretty good here in NW WA state weather wise. I do fertilize, water, and invest in good soil too. Keep up your good attitude! Touching message for us all...we are all only human, and in this thing called life TOGETHER. Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you and your family and big hugs from a grandma. Be well!🙏💖👵🌱💐

Hi Tony - I know it's a bit weird commenting on this one so long after you uploaded it, but I wanted to say thank you for this video. I know how difficult it would have been to make. The message that you shared with this video has stayed with me ever since I first saw it when it was uploaded. I still think about it all the time. It's so important to know that role models like yourself can't always be perfect, and things like this happen. And that's not to mention how you jumped right back on the horse and got on with all the work of turning this around. I think of all the gardening videos I've seen this was the one that inspired me to pick up the camera and start filming my own stuff, and I do so with as much honesty as I can - which is very much inspired by this video, so I wanted to say a proper thank you.

Just keep moving forward.

To me that is the most important thing, no garden is ever 100% all the time, most channels would have you believe they never get things wrong or have life to get in the way. Hi Noel. Thanks for your continued support. I believe that no one is perfect and where is the lesson in always showing perfect things. Yes its great when it all goes well and is pretty, but I believe you should also show your failures, this give others the knowledge that they are not alone and sends a message that if supposedly gardeners who know what they doing can get it wrong then its ok for them to get it wrong. Life is too short to worry about stuff like that.

Thank`s mate! This video is worth a thousand "Perfect" Garden /Allotment videos! It is good to see that we all can have those disaster seasons! I did not grow veg last year because I was disheartened by all the things you have shown! This year I have grown again and realized that it`s more about the connection to Nature that is important! We have success and failure! It is the learning process! Hope you rise above your difficult times and find peace in your garden.

Thanks so much for your honesty. At the beginning of the year my garden was wonderful but I have been battling with ill health for the past couple of months and my garden has become a wilderness of weeds. I was lucky that my son helped me with the watering in the really hot weather but between the slugs, flea beetle, and cabbage white butterflies my crops were decimated. But as someone who has gardened all their long life, the thing that keeps me going is the knowledge that there is always next year.

You mentioned the wood chip area did better. Back to Eden method will always protect your plants to a grater degree during times of stress by supressing weeds, moderating the temp & holding moisture. Thank you for this video. I once lost the best of a year in my past allotment due to a fracture dislocated elbow, best arm in full plaster, and my Dad unexpectedly passed away that same year. Unfortunately, 'Allotment Society' was born just then and they took over. In this instance, several tenants covertly and quickly voted each other in as chairman and board, were cruel and unkind and even turned into vandals and bullies; destroying as much of my crops as possible, digging up my strawberry mound and other berries, verbally abusive and harassing because I dug my heels in and exorcised my tenancy rights, legally stood up to them, but eventually gave up the fight as I decided that I really didn't want to spend the years ahead working in my allotment alongside such awful people. I was helped by friends and family to move my most valuable perennials, finding an adequate plot of land to rent nearer to home; I guess some things are meant to be and with the right mind and action are improving on all accounts. Thank goodness for happy endings once through the worst :-)

My bush is about 3 years old from a seed probably deposited by birds. My garden gets neglected for weeks but I do water any pots and my 2 tomato plants. I bought them late as we had been away. They were the last on sale in B and Q . They were large with some small tomatoes already set . With a lot of pruning of leaves and side shoots I am amazed at how they have done. Sorry that life issues have thrown you so many curves, but glad to see this update. Your garden did well all things considered. We also recently returned from a 6 week trip to a sad garden. Our garden sitter did a good job with the bare essentials, but a power failure combined with beastly heat killed about half of our tomatoes and rodents ate many of our peppers to the ground. Lastly, rabbits, chipmunks, and other rodents harvested a lot of plants. But as you say, we are salvaging plants, and have already planted new seeds. Take care.

Hi Tony, glad to see you are back. You failed to thin your grapes, I failed to prune my 1 Year old Plum tree. No plums but we had 40+ mph wind and despite 2 hedges across the wind, both taller than the tree, it snapped taking all but 3 branches with it.😢 I've pruned it since and it is re-sprouting. I've grown my climbing beans up a 4 pole pyramid, that wind blew the leaves off. The leaves grew back in time for another blow of 45+mph. The pyramid blew over and took a sweet corn with it. The pyramid ended up resting on the green house, although some beans had been ripped out of the ground, I was able to replant them, I've tied the pyramid to the scaffold brasica cadge, although the wind continued, the scaffold made moving/shuffling noises, but restrained the pyramid enough. I'm now getting beans. The sweetcorn was resurrected and tied to its own cane which was tied to the pyramid. Looks a horrible lash up but looking hopeful for harvest. Pleased with 1st time melons and aubergines in the greenhouse. Tomatoes cropped but stopped flowering some weeks back, they usually continue into October! The heat didn't get to 30oC but my garden is top LH corner of Wales. Enjoy the prospect of all that wine.🍷 Gwen

@@simplifygardening It certainly has, but there are always high winds sometime when the climbing beans are up, here on Anglesey. I have 4 3ftx6ft raised beds and a 10x8 green house. Am I going to get a decent crop from dwarf beans? My pyramid just has 4 French beans, I put another 4 in a big pot 18inch and left them in the greenhouse while I was away for a weekend. They climbed the 5ft poles and jumped into the tomato strings before I got back! I'm having to freeze the surplus from them. Hi Tony, nice to see you back. If you remember I took your advice and have grown potatoes in large farm tubs this year for the first time and they have done fine, the first tub gave a yield of 20lb the rest averaged 16lb to 4 charlotte seed. However as I said earlier in the year I installed raised beds due to my back problem and from 10klo of seed potatoes I have harvested 501 lbs this being my best ever weight. The spuds were Rocket, Charlotte and Wilja 3klo of each but just over weight in each bag. My biggest challenge here in West Sussex is lack of rain, we have had many long dry hot spells. I hope you get your ground sorted and good luck with a harvest, best wishes C

I feel better knowing that other people's gardens can 'go to the birds' due to other factors, but am glad you're finally back. I'm in Ontario Canada and our biggest problem this year was the amount of biting insects the whole season, then high heat for a while. We've had almost no rain for ages, just got some the other night and glad of it. Next year water butts will be ready, supports for things will be ready to install, etc. As for your grapes, could you juice and sweeten them for the freezer for grape juice concentrate? We do that with most of ours.
