In UK I either plant winter brassicas or top dress empty beds so they’re ready for spring

I was busy working on a new 12'x50' bed in my yard so I had to wait and watch the replay. Your info and advice is always appreciated. I agree with you about using fall as a prime time to amend and prepare your beds for next year. I turn in the heavy mulch I put on everything during the growing season and let that rot in over the fall and early spring. Next year I will put a new layer of partly composted material as mulch and start the process again.

A great book to look into is by Joseph Lofthouse "Landrace Gardening". It goes into details about how not every plant/seed may not be adapted to your growing environment, so he sows every seed he has, and lets nature take care of it, weeding out the weakest and letting everything cross pollinate to get the best genetic adaptation to YOUR environment. Each successional year progressively becomes better and better. Obviously there's taste testing involved with vegetables.

Please do a video on black walnut trees. They're toxins what you can and can't go near it. Also tree of heaven. Both affect a lot of gardeners here in New York

Gardner Scott I thought that I had to wait until all the branches had lost all their color on an asparagus plant before I could cut it down. I was under the understanding that the energy of the plant had to completely go into the roots in order for the plant to come up the next spring in a good amount. Can you clear that up for me?
@GardenerScott3 ай бұрын
Yes, the energy from the plant is going to the roots. Once the leaves turn brown, that process stops. You can wait until the entire plant turns brown or until the branches turn brown to cut it down.

I’m looking to apply beneficial nematodes to combat persistent pests. Is it best done in fall? Spring? Both?
@GardenerScott3 ай бұрын
It depends on the pest. Different nematodes attack different pests at different times in their lifecycles. Generally, this is in either fall or spring when larvae are active.
