I feel like I‘m probably the only 16 year old here. But I wanna grow my own food, I wanna know where it came from and I kinda like gardening and growing plants. I feel like a proud mom when I see that the seeds I planted grow into a strong and healthy plant :D

Don’t feel bad for being young, I’m younger than you are and I’m here. I am doing it for those reasons as well but I also think it’ll be cool for my little brothers (4&6) to help water and learn some fun lessons. I remember being their age and my grandmas garden was the coolest thing in the world, I’d like to pass the feeling on. (Also I know it’s still very much winter but I like to be prepared)

Most important lesson I’ve learned about gardening: research what you plant before buying it. I planted tulips in a container in Texas. TEXAS. They didn’t even last a month. Don’t make my mistakes. Make sure your plants are suited to your zone, it’s the right time of year, what their sun/water/fertilizer needs are, and what pests and diseases to look out for. You’ll be 100% more equipped to take care of your plants

Fun fact, dandelion, a common weed, is actually edible. The root can be used to make “cowboy coffee,” and the flowers and the leaves are also edible. Mallow weeds are also edible. And you know those big ferns? Turn the fronds upside down during spring-summer (depends on where you live and what type of fern), and you’ll find sori. Rub the sori on stinging nettle rashes and you’ll relieve the sting for about 5 minutes (takes about 30 seconds for the thing to work).

I have been gardening for a few Years and if there is something that can be done the "wrong" way, I have apparently done it lol. So, as a result of that I have learned a lot of things and I like to visit other Gardener Pages and Videos to see if there are things I can do to improve my Garden. I try to learn with fresh eyes. I wish someone had told me about Coir, mixing Peat and Sand into my Soil for example and you hit on a lot of things that beginners need to know that a lot of us learned the hard way and by failure. Great Video.

If you are going to compost,do not use citrus peel or banana peel, they will not compost correctly. They do not break down well and will mold and rot,not compost down with the rest of your compost. Just a tip from a lady who has learned and is still learning ❤️✨

Great info. I'm retired and started a garden last year. Didn't do good. My zucchini got a LOT of squash bugs. My tomatoes did okay. This year I started zucchini, again, and tomatoes, added cantaloupe to the garden. We live in the southern portion of the country, so we have a long growing season. Thanks for all the great info.

Wow, just found you. Always had a garden as a younger person. Never none a fall garden, but mixed greens. Took your list to see if it’s to late to plant now in the center of N. C.

I've been gardening for about 45 years. This is the best "getting started" series I've seen and I've watched hundreds of "how to videos". I'm interested in which vacuum pack machine you use as mentioned at 12:00 minutes in the video.

Thanks! That one was a cabellas brand vacuum sealer. I can't find it anymore but there are similar ones out there.

This was so helpful I wasn’t sure where I was going to start! Luckily I had already bought seeds but only what I know we’ll eat! I went onto migardener and bought some more of what I couldn’t find at the store and my boyfriend is building the raised bed I asked for! Can’t wait to see how my first gardening experience turns out!
