Hi there that's great help my question is I have a lawn rake machine but not a scarifier do I need one if I want to overseed? Also I had z lot of weeds and I applied weedol for lawns at end of march it hasn't made any difference really probably too early ? I also made a lot of holes to aerate and that with the lawn rake has made it look a bit sorry for itself. I bought some seed and some lawn tonic. Fertiliser should I just leave now till autumn? Thanks a million

When i watch the local council plant grass seed from my bedroom window, they just throw handfuls of seed around baldy lawn areas, burp and then leave. A month later its all grass! Never works for me.

Ohhhhh I need a bit of advice on seed please. Can you share the link to the seed videos? I'm battling with Poa Annua at the moment and my lawn that was laid from turn last year is a total disaster. I'm learning as I go and didn't realise I had to feed it 🙈 Slowly slowly I'm hoping to get it back to its former glory 😁 I bought canadian grass seed but it's bloody expensive!
Regarding weeds, a product called Tenacity worked great for me and can be used right up to seeding. A little more complicated than most in that you need a surfactant and marker dye along with a good sprayer, the combined cost was $82 on amazon using a bundle with all 3 products for $50 and a cheap but awesome battery powered sprayer. I bought the generic which is identical and worked fine just expect a white lawn until the weeds die off. This product works well on crabgrass, clover and nutsedge and others

Hi I am just getting ready to sow my seed in lawn, I opted on not getting a roller, because there just didn't seem to be any decent ones out there, alot of very negative reviews for something quite expensive and i may only use it once or twice. So i saw you treading down the soil so looks like that's my option, this is going to be my steps, 1) put down my seed, 2) lightly rake with a common garden leave rake no fancy one lol, 3) Then trample in the seeds, the area is 7m by 2.5 m, so not massive but a fair amount of trampling lol, 4) final step and this one not sure about, should I just use my common sense here, eg if it's a wet day or the soil looks quite moist should I hold off with the watering in case I displace the seeds, or should I still lightly water, this is my other worry as I'm tramping in the seeds does this mean I'll end up with a lawn that's not level, I did level it it already using a lawn leveller, AKA lute, any advice welcome please, or do you think I'm good, hope you reply.
@GardenLawncareGuy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen sounds good to me, you can tread in lightly by foot or use the mower if it's a petrol one with a rear roller (no blades just the weight). Ref the Watering the key is to keep them moist so yes vary it based on the weather

@@GardenLawncareGuy Hi sorry to bug you again, I'm contemplating leaving the seeding till spring, just cause the weather's took a bit of a change, quite windy don't want seeds blown all over, also the soil has been down quite a while now and I'm getting some weeds popping up nothing drastic, just some clover, that kind of onion weed with three shoots, don't know the name lol, and the dreaded horse tail, I've been raking them out though. Initially I went down around six inches removed the soil, riddled it all then replaced it, I thought I would have been seeding it at least two months ago, but I've been held up with other stuff, I also never treated it with weed killer, because I thought that would just delay things further. So now I'm just thinking of maybe putting a lid on it, treating with weed killer, I'd be using Super strength Glyphosphate weed killer, then just covering it up with a tarpaulin keep an eye on the weeds and start sowing in spring, I'd appreciate your thoughts, don't know if I'm just being a wimp or not and making excuses, after all it's only grass, and it's not a huge area either, but I have put alot of work into it as well and want a decent result, the reason for all this in the first place is the whole area was covered with weeds I tried to improve it, and found out there was bricks underneath, it must have been a base for two old coal boxes, so I removed everything and started my project, lastly when you do treat with Glyphosphate, how long before you can sow your seeds? Thanks

@GardenLawncareGuy3 жыл бұрын
That is interesting for sure Andy 👍 My ph is high close to 8. Looking to bring it down this spring
@andydixon47233 жыл бұрын
@@GardenLawncareGuy You're only going to get ryegrass going in that. Trouble is, other grass will germinate but soon die off. Be very wary of changing pH. It must be done gradually with regular testing. It's not easy, even though some of us do it unintentionally with iron sulphate when we moss kill, although that tends to be temporary unless it forms an ionic bond with calcium in the soil which can cause drainage problems, often called an 'iron pan' in greens where it's been done for years. The trouble is, pH is not linear. i.e. a pH of 6 is 10X more acid than 7. a pH of 5 is 100X more acid. 4 is 1000X etc. Can I suggest you sign up for a course? You can do a Sports turf HNC in 2 years part time, 1 day a week college, 15-20 hours a week of homework if you're prepared to put the effort in or an HND in 3 years. This is assuming you have a basic NVQ2 or similar to start with, otherwise add another 2 years on but the NVQ is easy.

Nothing wrong with lolium perenne at 5.5-7.5 I'd love to see some studies that show otherwise.
@andydixon47233 жыл бұрын
@@mindgame01 True but if you look around in nature, it will always revert to what is natural. Plant an acid lawn with rye and I bet the Festuca and possibly even Agrostis species will creep in after a while. A lolium/Fescue lawn can be hard work as it typically requires far more scarifying. I think it's better to start with what you have instead of fighting nature.

@GardenLawncareGuy3 жыл бұрын
Not mandatory but work agitating the existing soil by raking especially if compacted and covering will help reduce bird take and moisture retention

Hi, great vid, just wondering it it necessary to top dress when overseeding? And would you put the fertiliser down before or after overseeding? Thanks
@1988rlp3 жыл бұрын
If you tread over the seed isn’t there a danger of compaction? I tried to start a new lawn in mid March. I tilled, raked and put fertiliser in the soil before sowing and treading the seed in, but I must’ve done something wrong because now the soil is like cement. I’m gonna give it another shot this Easter but don’t wanna make the same mistakes.

No more than walking on the lawn and creating seed to soil contact will improve germination. Compaction is generally caused over time by traffic and a key step

I tilled my entire backyard and put the seeds down and after layed a small amount of leaf mulch on top. It seems to be impossible for me to achieve grass

If seeding at, say 35g/m2, would I set my spreader up at half of this, to spread in both directions?
@GardenLawncareGuy3 жыл бұрын
Yes spreading in both directions is another great tip to get max coverage and overlap!

Adding a layer of soil on top but not to bury the seed lower than a quarter inch. I'm going to drink some liquor now and come back to lay some artificial grass

I've just started digging all my grass up (weeds) manually I'm starting to regret it I'm half way of digging up ,a pile of mud and weeds ,now do I carry on back hurting, I suffer with sciatica not the best thing to have when digging I do about half hour of digging then stop once I do get all the weeds dug up then what
@TPHB50115 ай бұрын
Literally just finished doing the exact same thing, I had my second sciatica operation 6 weeks ago, I'm just happy I was physically able to it

New problem.I laid the topsoil down exactly evenly. The night after I laid the seed it rained heavily, the soil has sunk and it not even, lots of bumps and holes. It's so depressing, I put so much of my time and effort into it, it looks shit.
@normalguy78983 жыл бұрын
How is it looking now? Once you have grass you can keep levelling out over.time.
@harrypaul27183 жыл бұрын
@@normalguy7898 The grass is very patchy. I've put seed down 3 times but the rains washes it away each time. I've cut it twice. Next spring I'm thinking of laying compost on top with seed mixed in and then rolling it. Hopefully that will work.

This guy has fifteen feet of yard! I have 15,000 sq. Feet yard. Mow low, Kill, de thatche, aeration, seed x 2 and water-fertilize for 18 days no mowing. This shit ain’t the space shuttle, it’s grass. Lol

you've just contradicted yourself , don't bury the seed and then you say put a layer of soil over it to lock in the moisture , so which is it ?????
@GardenLawncareGuy3 жыл бұрын
Not a contradiction do both, cover the seeds with a thin layer will help, but don't bury them too deep as it will hinder.

Caring is the worst thing you can do. Just throw that shit out there and don't care. Then it'll explode into a jungle of healthy lawn. If you care it'll die to spite you.
