as a chemist, I strongly recommend always adding any caustic chemicals such as potassium and sodium hydroxide to water and not vice versa. very violent exothermic reactions occur when you add water to the solid powder.

Nice instructional video, only one suggestion; when teaching people how to use KOH or NaOH, they should always be cautioned in the use of caustic chemicals, including wearing proper safety gear like gloves and eye protection, taking care in the clean up of equipment after making non-saponified soaps, and finally, they should remember to add the caustic crystals to the water, slowly, not the other way around. These chemicals react VIOLENTLY with water and serious burns can be the result.

You could make the soap in a block (refer to making soap instructions), Once done, then shred it with a cheese grater. It will make the soap easier to blend with the water. Specially if you give it some time after pouring the water and then blend it.

You literally just made soap! I was wondering when it started because I thought “Hey, this is how we make homemade soap!” So I can basically take homemade soap and use it as a surfactant. The first part is how I make soap and the second is how I make laundry detergent… sort of. Very easy. You went over it nicely.

I just started making JWA on Monday before your video! If you use an immersion blender, it gets to trace faster. I only had to wait 24 hours for it to harden. I added the water for stage 2 on Tuesday, after breaking it up. I didn't do the paint drill stirring. Wish I had. I stirred by hand only twice a day, so it is taking longer to dissolve. I also had to use rainwater that I filtered through an unbleached coffee filter because our Walmart was sold out of distilled water. Should be ready by Friday! Love this channel!

You could also let the initial “soap” to completely harden after 24 hours like regular soap makers who slice up their bars at that point and air-dry for a few weeks. After it’s fully cured you could grate the soap and dissolve it into water as needed or dissolve it all at once if that suits better.

I make soap. I would use the same % of ingredients (smaller batch) but cook in a crock pot before adding the additional water. It would become a paste. Then add to hot water to melt it. It would be done in a day. Much quicker and easier than trying to mash and combine semi soft with cold water. Do you see any disadvantages to this?

Metric conversion from Imperial (US) for those interested. 1 US gallon = 128 fluid ounces, so 2 US gallons + 13 ounces = 269 fluid ounces 269 fluid ounces at 29.6 ml/fl oz is equivalent to 7.96 litres. Call it 8 litres. QED

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would like to try and make some. I collected some leaves and placed in a black plastic bag with holes and added some Bokashi and let it sit for almost a year and then placed in black plastic tote and add a little Bokashi every now and then. It now pretty much looks like dark rich leaf mold a year later. Can I use this instead of the forest stuff? Thank you, Jim

Mixing two different units of measure is problematic for this type of work. US gallons are 20% smaller than Imperial/UK/Canadian gallons. One US gallon = 3,785 ml = 3.8 litres. 13 US ozs. = 385 ml. I think the USA is the only country in the world not using metric measurements for standard commerce, although it is “officially” metric. All scientists, US included, use metric measure.

I totally agree!!... as you know the JADAM books are wildly confusing and in particular the measurements of stuff and it took me many failures over the years before I found this exact measurements... you guys will have to do the conversions yourself lol...

@@gardenlikeaviking Your measurements were the easiest to follow and made sense! I had tried someone else's video and it was a compete failure. I had too much KOH. But I was able to rescue some of it when I followed your video!

I work in a lab in the US and we utilize both measurements in weight as we take mg/L and conver to to pounds per gallon etc. . Metric for volume measurements such as liquids. But you'd have to be in the science to know.

Looking at the first stage on the video where the first gallon is added. The bucket seems a lot fuller than mine does . Suppose I can only follow the conversion and hope for success.

@@johnwilton3496 I shot the picture in wide angle so the bucket will look a bit distorted.... the gallons and ounces are all US... it'll work!

Can you use filtered oil that had previously been used for frying? I’m assuming you won’t be able to get the particulate count down. It would be good thought to have a use for this “waste” product other than biodiesel.

if you could filter it enough then yes you can... I'd try a small batch like this and see... let me know the results please!!
