I have also mixed the seeds with a bit of potting soil and tossed by hand and that has worked too. Last year I sowed my poppies on top of the snow and had such a gorgeous display. Lauren’s Grape is such a rich color and never failed to take my breath away. Your garden is looking lovely.

I’ve spread poppy seeds on the snow and they germinate when settling into the soil as the snow melts in spring. North west Michigan, zone 5/6.

@@barbaramccann7944😅as long as the birds don’t see them. I watched the snowbirds gobble up all the liatris seeds in a short time, just sticks now. Yes, I have heard others plant on snow. We have crazy wildlife here. I had a ton of poppy seeds I collected so I could afford to share a few 😊.

Nice tip for those teeny seeds that might otherwise blow away. I've also seen recommended if people want to sow mixed wildflower seeds to combine with sand, which helps distribute them more easily and makes it harder for birds to get them all. Those Black poppies look fantastic! I hope you have a lush crop of them! With seed sizes, bigger does make things easier; years ago I bought a packet of red nasturtiums, and every year they re-seed themselves, though I do collect a bunch. I'm in Southern California and we hare having a very dry winter so far. Mid 60s during the day, mid 40s at night, and no significant rain for months. Last year was very rainy, so it's interesting to see fewer acorns on my native oaks. Still have tomatoes on the vine, which should be ok unless we get frost in the coming weeks. January is always colder than December. Nice to see your winter garden, and hear about the plants that work in your zone, as well as your pests. No deer here, but raccoons and skunks will dig to get grubs.

It’s lovely to see your garden in early winter before the snow arrives. The hornbeams for me are just as impressive in winter as in summer. Believe it or not we are experiencing the same weather conditions as you are currently. The snow was very early in November, followed by wind and rain but for the last couple of weeks we’ve had incredibly mild weather, so I’m too catching up on outside jobs. Happy Gardening 🧑‍🌾

Those are tiny and I would have to mark them somehow 😅 because I would forget about them. After collecting a ton of various seeds over the years I’m getting sticker shock at times of known varieties that I know give a ton of seeds. My goal is to give more attention to finding right veg and continually collecting seeds. Poppies especially have a ton of seed as I was scooping them to spread around. Lightly breathe into plastic seed packets to release static. Rabbits or deer liked to chew down poppies here. I think rabbits. I wish I would have exposed more soil before I threw them in the meadow area. We will see. Thx for the tips and tour! It’s unusually warm this weekend and get ready for the dive in temps this week. I just was out yesterday and sprayed apple trees-bit late but ok. Yes things look messy to some, but I’m thinking also all the protection the plants/bugs are getting with snow melted and cold coming in.

The fastigiate hornbeam is such a great choice. We chose to go with the American because of its tolerance to wet feet and great fall color (while providing for our birds and butterflies) - whether it is just as reliably marcescent, we will see….

I also purchased creeping thyme (supposed to be a deeper pink flowering variety), Dusty miller (Cineraria maritima), Didiscus caerukeus (Blue Lace flower), a white flowering Stock, and Nemophila Menziesii (Baby Blue Eyes).
