Thanks so much AJ. Love my secateurs. It’s been a while since I did a pruning video. So got a few lined up for those tricky spring evergreen shrubs that confuse the heck out of people! I’m trying to keep a decent schedule of videos. Just a bit manic with work. I’m sure you Ninjas are a patient bunch though! 😉🤣🥷🌿 If it’s ever been too long give me a shout and I’ll grab the camera. Have a fab easter weekend. Lee

Thanks Lee for your video on garden plants for avoiding slugs and snail attacks. Awesome, educational insight. I realised I grow about half off your list but had no idea of their critter proof value! 😊

Hi Gale! Good to hear from you. Sounds like you’re already a fully fledged Garden Ninja by birthright then! 😉 it’s amazing how many people ask me how to kill slugs when really it’s just tweaking the plants so we can avoid adding harmful chemicals to our gardens that end up in the food chain! 🥷🌿🤘

@@Gardenninja I’m now going to learn about those plants on your list that are new to me and try to grow those too. Sadly, most of my real favourites get destroyed by rampant vine weevil larvae munching the roots in my soil: heuchera, tall sedum, primula, cyclamen, bergenia, rhododendron,azalea, fuschia. Annual ‘watch’ to notice their activity and pick as many out of affected area, then water in the solution. Trying to spot the adult weevil in summer evenings is tricky. Any suggestions? 🤔
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Vibe weevil is a royal pain. To be honest the best method is nematodes to get it under control. Then you can relax for a bit heuchera often come with vine weevil from garden centres sadly and then spread! 🥷🌿🤘

Thanks for advice Lee. Every day’s a school day in the garden! I had thought that the vine weevil eggs might be in the plant pot compost when you buy them but they are dark so hard to spot. If I put anything in a pot outside, I place a piece of stocking over the base hole then the broken crock before the compost. The water can still run out through the ‘net’ and grit on the top. Belts and braces to prevent the adult getting in to lay eggs🤞definitely on a mission 😂

Anything which is not slug resistant will not last the night in my garden. So I have many of the featured plants. The plants in my garden have to survive because I am not going to be a servant to needy plants. This means watering too. It is a survival of the environment situation for my plants.

Every year I get a different issue! North West England. Year before last - lily beetles, before I knew they even existed. Last year was aphid city (I started overhauling the back of my garden and all but eradicated the overgrown nettles.. and they proceeded to attack my beautiful flowers 🙈). This year, it's slug and snail party time.. apparently, we had a boggy winter allowing these unwelcome critter's population to explode ready for spring 😱🥶 plus the hedgehogs are disappearing 😢🦔 I've had a reprieve with the extended dry, warm weather.. So thank you for your kind advice Lee! New subscriber ❤️

@Gardenninja

Where they plug plants by any chance? They once they get a bit bigger the slugs leave them alone. It’s just when they’re small there’s not as many leaf hairs big slugs can still munch them! 🥷🌿🐌

Hmmm interesting. Are they young or old plants? Usually they don't get touched, unless they're much younger plants where the leaves are still quite small ie not as many hairs? But you've got me stumped if not!! 🥷🌿

I've always had foxgloves and something eats them so if it is not snails is it slugs?
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Ahhh could be rabbits or mice you know I’ve seen them nibble the leaves. Beetles too can but usually once the leaves get big enough things leave them alone. Maybe add some chicken mesh over the rosette (the ground leaves as they emerge from seed) then when they get bigger remove it. Hope that helps! Lee 🥷🌿🤘

The nematodes have stopped the slugs, but the snails have taken over. All my hard work, gone, its like a wasteland. Even fox gloves. Im so distressed I could cry. I think the only way forward is shrubs, theyve even started eating the convolvulus. Picked some giants off tonight and chucked them in a salt water bucket. Do you think that people feeding the birds has caused them to not bother? Ive loads of birds, and some newts, nothing will stop them. 😭

Nope. Hardy gerenius are not slug resistant. The new growth gets attacked every spring. The slugs attack less the older foliage.
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Mariya. You must have mega tough slugs as I’ve never known any to tackle Geraniums! But there’s always exceptions to the rule. May be try garlic spray. You can make it yourself. Crush around 10 gloves of garlic. Add to a pan with 300ml of water. Bring to the boil. Leave to seep. Then sieve liquid into a spray bottle. Spray onto geraniums when they’re young. That should keep the slugs off as they hate the smell or any allium. 🥷🌿👌
