Hi Lee. In Southern Ontario, here in Canada, I always pruned hydrangeas just before winter set in. Usually October/November. No new growth ever appears here until about April of the next year. We have a lot of the really old "snow ball" variety. I trimmed them back by about 1/3 to 1/2 and the result was never disappointing. Very different climates, yours and mine! Your videos are always very informative and I really enjoy them. Barry is adorable, and you have beautiful teeth! Hugs, Jay
@Gardenninja4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jay! Thanks for the comment. My teeth are all my own haha. Plants like Hydrangeas are super tough. Obviously in insanely cold places like Ontario you will need to wait a bit before pruning them but in warmer climates late winter is when I prune mine. They always then put on a good show! Barry’s doing fine. Just need to teach him how to dig up weeds now!! Haha happy gardening!
@jaythompson71494 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply, Lee! Actually, where I live isn't as cold as you might expect. This winter has been very mild compared to last year. Your winters seem to not too severe. Would like to visit Manchester some day! Jay
@deborahralph61473 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, I pruned my lace cap and mop head (both in pots) in February, they were looking very promising until we had some very severe frosts recently here in the Cotswolds Worcestershire, the lovely new growth looks extremely frost damaged mid to top end, any chance it will sprout new growth from these damaged bud areas if I cover it with fleece until the last of the frosts for our area have finished, I know it's a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted but I can but hope LOL, there are new buds sprouting toward the base of both plants so covering with fleece would at least protect those. Thanks for all your useful tips, it's great to watch someone with your knowledge who doesn't over complicate how to get the best from the garden.
@Gardenninja3 жыл бұрын
Hi Deborah. Frost can be a pain with all shrubs and can damage flowers. Yes defo fleece them to protect the other buds. You’d be surprised at how resilient they are. So don’t give up hope! So glad you’re enjoying my guides. Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🌿

Thanks for YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS I have a couple of these hydrangeas , one blooms two flowers the other NONE at all . Thanks to you I see what my problem is , 1st they’ve only grown approximately 21/2 ‘ tall and I’ve done no thinning of these bushes, so they are tightly packed ( no room for air ) it’s the end of October here in Detroit so I’ll wait until spring to open up the plants and with your tips they should start to grow taller and bloom ( like others I see in my neighborhood ) also one tip that you deli not cover ( from what I’ve read ) coffee grinds help the plants maintain there original purple or pink colors instead of turning white ( mine have retained there purple hue , the few that I do manage to have bloom )
@Gardenninja4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce. I’m so glad the video guides proved helpful. Pruning and mulching are your two best friends when it comes to shrubs. I’m not sure coffee grinds would make that much difference really but it’s an organic mulch either way. So give it a whirl and let me know how you get on. Happy Gardening! Lee

Thanks for explaining some of this stuff! I live on the central coast of California and it's now August. The blooms on my "Let''s Dance Rhythmic Blue" are all faded out... but not quite dry or papery-feeling. Cheers! :-)

@Gardenninja3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! Give it a good chop now. If it’s spindly maybe take it back even by half. That will set it up for success next year. Probably lose some flowers this year but better to get it back to shape though. Happy pruning! Lee 🥷🌿

Thank you so much I was looking at mine just today and wondered when I need to prune them. We are coming to the end of our "Summer" right now and the colder days/nights creeping up too fast😢😫🇿🇦 I love my hydrangeas and my hibiscus and so afraid of damaging them (Johannesburg SA🇿🇦)
@Gardenninja3 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather. Great to hear from you. Don’t worry about damaging them. Both are tough and respond well to pruning. You could even give them both a quick tidy up now before your winter comes! Happy pruning. Lee 🥷🌿

I recently bought a potted hydrangea beautiful blue flowers, when can I transfer it into the ground?
@Gardenninja3 жыл бұрын
The best time is either Autumn or Spring. When the plant is dormant. Enabling easier root establishment. Happy planting! Lee 🥷🌿🤘

During the summer now I'm in zone 6b in ky, can I prune my hydrangea limbs that are touching the ground?
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, yes of course. Maintenance pruning is a must to keep the shape and form of the shrub! Just back to the next set of leave buds. 🥷🌿🤘

So I’ve pruned all mine but only cut to the first new growth as I had read if I cut below it then it won’t flower. I would like to trim it back and bit should I just go for it ? It won’t be the end of the world I guess if j do it but I’ve got 6/7 in my garden and it’s amazing when they flower
@Gardenninja Жыл бұрын
Hi Bagaddict71. That’s not necessarily true. Whilst they tend to flower at the tips it all depends on the time of pruning. If you prune off a bud that’s already in existence yes you’ll remove this years flowers. But if pruning in early spring say March then no. Just keep your eyes on where the buds are. Ie tightly wrapped little sticky out bits Ie buds! Do a hard prune next spring if uncertain! Depends how messy and in need your hydrangea shrub is! 🥷🌿🤘

@@Gardenninja I’ve done it 😂😂 initially I didn’t cut below any buds but they I got brave and cut to the next bud so time will tell I will report back. I’m in fife near Edinburgh so we can get frost really up till this week hence we do everything so much later. The buds and leaves are just appearing now. 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

Hi! This is an amazing video, thank so much. Your advice is consistent to some I'd seen a while ago, but recently Facebook groups have been telling me to prune at the end of summer or early fall, and I'm confused. Any idea where this is coming from? I think I'll wait until late winter, but they're so adamant in late summer that I'm second guessing myself. Thanks again!
@Gardenninja2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ana, Thanks for your kind words. I always prune late winter thats whats always worked for me. I'd never prune late fall as you miss all those dried flower heads through winter which I think look lovely! Happy snipping. Lee

@Gardenninja2 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane. Top tip with any plants. If they look fine and are making you smile then they’re ok! Everything will grow bigger in the ground but it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Give them a feed at the end of their flowering season and see how they do next year. Happy gardening. Lee 🥷🌿🤘

Thanks for the informative video. I LOVE hydrangeas and would love to have some blooms in my home. How do I do this without harming the bush? I heard if you cut them they won’t grow back for a year or so.
@Gardenninja2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeanne, Hydrangeas are super tough. They flower each year for a few months. If you cut them off that's the flower finished from that stem for that year, so depends if you want them as cut flowers. But don't panic you're going to then stop them flowering from below the cut the next year. Happy pruning! Lee

Hi Lee Many thanks for your clear video. Our hydrangeas are all deep pink,yet our soil is acidic (Camelias thrive around where i live in Cork,Ireland). How can this be? Also,i find Freesia bulbs do not grow so well. Our soil is heavy clay soil ....is this the problem?
@Gardenninja3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome Gerald glad it’s useful. To be honest whilst acidity plays some part in the colour it’s not a definite science. Some cultivars will stay their true colour. I wouldn’t bother trying to lime or acidity any soil to change the colour. Just go with Mother Nature!! Bulbs will never truly thrive in clay. It’s just too wet for most. Crocosmia can survive but most others will trail off unless drainage is addressed. Agin plant with Mother Nature not against her and you will be fine! Happy gardening! Lee 🥷🌿

Thank you so much for just putting this in simple terms 🙏🏼 I have a huge one in the front garden of my new house that needs moving. When would you recommend I did this?
@Gardenninja4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucy, Many thanks for your kind words and glad the guides been useful for you. I'd move a Hydrangea or any deciduous shrub mid-winter when they are dormant. It's easier to work with a leafless shrub and they won't go into shock as easily compared to a move when in growth. The only thing to avoid is doing it during or just before a frost. Still water well the day before the move and then immediately after moving. No need to feed or babysit it too much if the ground remains damp. Hope that helps and make sure you subscribe for even more gardening guides! Lee
