In the fall I cut off some old blooms and hang to dry. Around November I spray paint them (white, silver, gold) and use to make a holiday wreath for the front door.

Laura and Aaron, I have to comment on your weekly update video from earlier this week. I think that the reason why your videos are so successful even when you can't believe that you have come this far, is that your videos provide entertainments that is family friendly. It's hard these days to find fun and happy things to watch that don't contain elements or fear, swearing or inappropriate content. Your videos make people happy.

Hi Laura, I just wanted to share my experience with Plant-Tone used on Macrophyllas. Last year, I experimented using Hollytone on half of my Macrophylla hydrangeas & Plant tone on half, all 13 plants are in the same location (southern exposure) & received the same care. Plant tone made them grow big strong green leaves and those plants ended up growing bigger by the end of the season, however they hardly had blooms(maybe 1 or 2 per plant.) I noticed the Hollytone macs growing at a slower rate, but they produced 2-3 more blooms than the Plant tone ones. I know macs set their buds the season before, but I suspect this coming season will be the true results of my experiment last year. (All my hydrangeas were only in their 2nd season, this year they are going into their 3rd, we live in Zone 6a-6b) Hope this helps ☺️

Or you can relocate it in a sunnier spot, 1 more year, let it green up this year. Next year if you don’t see blooms then get rid of it. I relocated hydrangeas into a shadier spot and they did not perform they only Greenup for me, I relocated them in a spot that had more sun but not full sun, a south facing spot and they bloomed for me!! 😊

I have one of these too. I only have 1 or 2 blooms and my plant is at least 4yrs old. I tried cutting it all the way back and not cutting at all, still no blooms. Going to try fertilizer this year and see what happens. I also took some of the babies at the base of plant and moved to different light areas to see if that is the problem. Very disappointed in this plant. Hopefully I will get more blooms this season. If not, may do what Laura says and get rid of it!

I'm from the Netherlands and it's so nice watching your videos, especially because in our country we are struggling with what precautions to take against the Corona virus, and more and more patients in hospitals everyday and more infections everyday. A lot of industry is affected and are worried about going bankrupt in the end. The flower industry is taking a big blow as well, and nurseries etc are giving away thousands of plants for free, that's better than throwing them away.. It's really sad... But I hope your family stays well and that you can keep posting 'normal' videos everyday. Thank you.

Miranda i think US is just getting to where your country is now. It looks there will be an enormous impact on the economy world-wide. And I doubt strongly our nurseries will be giving away plants for free, they just rather let them die and then throw away, sadly. Laura's videos do bring a sense of normality and take thoughts away from worries. Stay safe and healthy!

Love watching your videos. You are very inspirational. Thanks for being an up-beat voice on KZbin. My question is, do you have a master spreadsheet which you follow to know when to do things or have you just gardened for so long, you instinctively know it is the right time to do "x"? While a spreadsheet or chart can be overwhelming, it can also help to spread the work out a bit. I feel like I would be a better gardening if I could plan ahead somewhat. At least I would know which supplies I need on hand, when to buy my plants, etc. If I have to go to the store before I begin a project, I use up all of my energy just doing that (and usually get distracted with more ideas while I'm there. )

Hydrangeas are my very favorite and I have quite a few of them. Not Laura quite a few, but for me because I love them. I'm freaking out because I think my gardener trimmed my oakleaf hydrangea as if it were a limelight. This is its second year. Thank you for the informative video!

Hi all, I live in zone 4b and I am trying to make a hedge of endless summer hydrangeas. They are in there 3rd year, but each year none of the branches live and it has to grow from the ground. So they are very small and do not have many blooms. Is this typical?

Endless Summer has different types of Hydrangeas. Which kinds are yours? If you lemme know I could help you diagnose a bit. I have every single type of hydrangea in my yard (surprised Laura doesn't have Serrata) in zone 4-6 Michigan.

I'm in zone 4 and my endless summer macrophyllas LOOK like dead sticks in spring, but then they start leafing out. They won't bloom if it's been a harsh, cold winter, but they will bloom if it hasn't been too bad. I've read they're zone 4 and I've read they're zone 5, but I think they're more of a zone 5 plant. You might have a better/easier time with the paniculata type that bloom on new wood... my Vanilla Strawberry blooms very faithfully every year, even when the deer nibble off every tip of it or we get down to -22°F! I just wish they came in a blue or purple color! They would be a huge seller for sure!

I've had my hydrangeas for about 7 yrs. First 3 yrs. no blooms at all, 4th yr. 2 to 3 blooms, 5th yr. 4 blooms and this year 5 to 6 huge blooms biggest ever. What I did differently last year was cut back a little more than year before because first 4 yrs. I wasn't aware to cut back. This year after cutting back I will use Hollytone now that I'm aware. Thanks.

I have a question and a comment: Last year a found a mangy oak leaf on clearance. It’s coming back strong but has an awful shape. I plan to let it grow and hopefully flower, and then cut it back hard, hoping for a more shapely bush. Does that sound right? Also, I agree with your philosophy on removing “problem plants” but I just couldn’t give up my big leafs that die back every year. My husband built me a special bed against the eastern side of the house. We’re in zone 6 and haven’t had bad winters, but we do get strong winds, and the big leafs seemed to get the brunt of it. They are more protected now and I’m seeing lots of greens buds! I’m hopeful now. Sometimes just listening to the plant pays off 😊

I had a rabbit 🐰 chew off the stems of my oak leaf hydrangea down to the ground during winter/early spring 2018/2019)It was it’s first season in the ground so it was small) I thought it was done for but it shot up into the most beautiful shape in the spring. Now I’m kind of glad it happened because I’m planning on doing that to the other one that has a not so pretty shape. Good luck.

I think those first large hydrangeas were good in front of the old Victorian homes that had/have 4 ft high entrances with wraparound porches.. Our pastor's parrish years ago had that where I spent time in my teens doing chores for them (ironing and such)..and summer projects.. kind of a second home so I also enjoyed the home and time on that big porch! (Their oldest grandchild was my age) Edit.. I love your house too with the hydrangeas..same vibe! They also had a big indoor porch/sunroom on one side of the house.

I want to plant hydrangeas in my front flower bed. It is currently empty, do you have any suggestions on how to prep my soil? I have tested the soil with a pH tester and it sits at a 7. I would like to get blue blooms so I need to bring the pH down I believe. 🤷🏼‍♀️ This will be my first time planting hydrangeas so I'm not sure what I'm in for but I LOVE them so I'm going to give it a try. 💙🌱🤞🏼

Julia I am in the exact same boat! I don't know what type of soil you have but we have clay.. I've been tilling away and amending with pine fines to break up the clay and we are adding lots of additional garden soil. after that, our plan is to plant the hydrangeas in the two beds (both are east facing) and add soil acidifier because we want blue blooms also. What I understand is that you can either use Aluminum Sulfate which is a little faster acting but not as long lasting, or sulfer which is slower but longer lasting. We plan to use the Sulfer (you can find it in any garden center labeled as soil acidifier with the blue hydrangeas right on the front) My only thing is that I'm not sure whether to amend all of the soil with the acidifier or just put enough in each planting hole (a cup is what I've heard) and do it that way.. trying to figure that out today. Good luck!

Last spring, the deer or rabbits ate all my tulips after leaves and buds appeared! So I added crushed egg shells into the soil when I planted more bulbs last fall and also after leaves sprouted this spring. It seems to keep the animals away. Now I am enjoying the beautiful tulips!

Hi Laura, love your channel! I'm in a bit of a dilemma: I ordered all my flowering plants from Breck's. They were shipped in a timely manner, but due to them coming from Holland, they've been held in US Customs for over 5 weeks now. All due to the Corona virus. They cannot give me a ship date. What would you do with these bulbs when they finally do arrive? I'm pretty sure it will be much too late to plant them, and hope they flower. The bulbs were Dutch Iris and Flowering Ferns. Thanks for your thoughts on this!!!

Laura, I LOVE hydrangeas. They’re the plant I can’t kill. Haha. Limelight’s have been a huge success in our garden and have been in the ground, blooming for 5 seasons and always have lots of blooms. They’re big and tall now bc I wanted them to reach their full potential after annual pruning. However, I feel like I need to prune them way back to give them a “reset.” Their main stems are about 1” around at the base. Is this a good idea for very mature plants, or should I continue pruning as usual?

I remember last year you trimmed the Munstead (sp) way back. Is it time for me to do that in my zone 7 or did I miss the date on doing it. They didn't really die back this winter at all. Looks like all I should do is just dead head the 2nd blooms from last summer. Thoughts? Thanks
@jimbailey3705
@jimbailey3705 4 жыл бұрын
If you can, I would say prune them all the way back. Might be best to see if Laura puts out a video, but I bought a house with a row of mustead lavender out front and they had only had minimal pruning (dead heading) for just a couple of years, but it was enough to damage the plants to the point that I am itching to rip them out and replant. They have gone really woody and patchy. I think what Laura is doing would prevent that from happening. Woody Munstead doesn't form nice balls, flops all over the place and it's really hard to weed inbetween the lavendar. So right in the middle of plant you get lots of weeds and you can't pull them out with roots etc easily.

Fertilize it as soon as you remember, they want nutrients throughout the season. You stop when they are in the Fall because you don't want them to be pushing flowers and new growth in the winter. A cold snap could injure that young growth and damage it.

Im fairly new to Hydrangeas, I got two endless summer "Bloomstruck" hydrangeas last year that weren't in great shape. I threw then in the ground last fall, and they've started leafing out. They're on the south side of my property (in zone 7a) where they get a good amount of sun now, but I have large trees that will give them dappled shade when it gets really hot in the summer time. Should be OK, right?
