I'm a Malazan superfan and have done 4 full read throughs, it's so fun watching people's reaction going in. With my past experience of Garden read alongs only about 1/3 will love it, some can't take the confusion and bounce, a few hate it, but no one will ever be "it's alright" big feelings ensue as it continues, glad you enjoyed this masterpiece, can't wait to see more

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed Gardens of the Moon! I remember the pacing being very fast. Deadhouse Gates felt much slower-paced in contrast (just FYI), but both provide a lingering impact on throughout the rest of the series. ❤

That’s great to know! I don’t mind slower-paced as long as it’s still a good story, which I know DG will be. So excited to continue!

There's a lot of fear-mongering surrounding the series, I promise you, you will understand far more than you think you will, you just might not get the full context till later. Kinda like a mystery. I urge new readers to just go with the flow.

Aaah this review makes me really happy, because I know how similar our tastes are, so this gives me high hopes that I will enjoy the story as well when I eventually get to it! I always see people talk about the themes and density, but you actually pointed out some things that made it sound a lot more like a cool fantasy adventure that I want to be a part of, haha. Great to hear that you, as a character-driven reader, didn't have big issues with the character work, because I was so scared of that. And hearing you talk about the complexity kinda gave me Locked Tomb vibes, where you understand each scene that is happening, but you just aren't catching onto the big picture/implications yet. Seems like I should be able to handle that, haha. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, loved this review!! 🤩

Yeah I definitely think people have been a little misleading about it being confusing. Alex and Kyle actually both said that Harrow is leagues harder to understand than this, so you’ll be fine 😂
@esmayrosalyne2 жыл бұрын
@@jordanreads Hahahah, if even Alex and Kyle think Harrow is more confusing than GotM then I feel really good about giving this one a shot sometime soon ;))))

I haven’t read anything from Steven Erickson, but I’ve always been interested. I’m a major Brandon Sanderson fan, so thick books don’t intimate. ☺️

I was surprised by how much I liked this book as well. I thought I would enjoy the ASOIAF read along more but I found myself wanting to read Malazan more. Motivated me to look for and purchase all remaining trades in the series so I’m ready to continue reading.

Glad the read along has been really positive. Erickson's writing does take a little getting used to. On some level, the characters are also confused about whose side they are on too.

I've only been reading for a year, is there any series you think I should read prior to prepare me for the confusion you were faced with or should I just jump straight into it? I've heard this is grim dark so I want to give the first law a read before I get around to this
@jordanreads2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think this is grim dark. It definitely has dark content, but it didn’t read as grim dark. I think it’s worth a shot jumping into it! If you get like 100 pages in and just aren’t enjoying it because of the confusion, you can always put it down and come back to it later! First law is in a lot of people’s top series. It didn’t work as well for me, but I’m definitely in the minority with that opinion.
@JoshSinnott972 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply and feedback. I've heard so much good and bad about this series but the only way to really know is to just try it and find out if it works for me Hmm, if I try first law and don't like it, hopefully that means I'll like malazan too aha
