Another very key trait that I look for that not many people talk about (on both Male and Female plants) is stem fragility. As I go through my selection process and the plants are getting big enough to get stem smell, stick, internal spacing etc...I will pull a branch down gently, if it pops from the main stem or buckles over without much force I toss it. I'm not breeding weak stem structure into my lines. Key concept for sturdy plants that can withstand some serious weight at the end of the growing cycle. Great vid and really dig the guests you are getting on. Thanks Chris.

I agree, i think its odd this gentleman isnt taking clones of his keeper cits and breeding with those, rather he is breeding straight from seed. How does he know or have any idea what the outcome is going to be? Like you said there are so many UNstable genetics out there nowadays.

@@ambientnoise2656 keeping clones makes sense to me for breeders. If nothing else you can compare the original from clones to the plants from your seeds. And you can go back if a cross goes wrong. I can see lots of reasons for keeping clones or keeping a mother and breeding her clones. I've never been a breeder but I can't imagine an advantage to always starting from seeds and not keeping clones.

This was one of my favorite episodes. Growing good flowers is fun for the first so many years, after that breeding becomes addictive, and although this is very entry level breeding information it's a very relaxing enjoyable listen for those who love the process. And remember, it's more about the journey then the destination! Love the process and you will be a breeder for life.

At 34:40 when he is talking about how it’s important to select well he is correct but is missed the biggest reason why. Because the f2 generation it the one where the recessive traits that you may have liked in one of the two plants while making you original cross. Not all desirable traits are dominant, some are recessive. If you are able to pick out a male or female plant with a desirable trait and that trait is occurring in approximately 25% of the pheno hunt, it’s a good hint that it may be recessive in nature. When you breed 2 visual recessives together 100% of the offspring will carry and display the visual recessive trait. Dominant traits aren’t always better, and recessive traits are much more valuable because they are more difficult to attain and take more generations to breed.

I try to change my profile pics of strains I've bred. There's one right here. A single plant under a 600 HPS. I started on this strain 2010. Finished in 2017. In nearly 30 years, I've bred 5 strains completely stable. Every seed is clone only worthy. That plant actually lufted the trellis off the ground. It's much harder today, as the genetics are a long way off from 95-2000

Genetics for Dummies, I got as far as the Mendelian genetics and that's all I needed to figure out what was up with my weed strain with a leaf anomaly. It's from a recessive gene so each time I cross it, I have to take 2 F2 plants with the recessive gene and use them to make F3 seeds and all of those seeds make plants with the anomaly. So it's a slow process to stabilize a recessive gene but knowing how it works sure saved me from a lot of guesswork! Copy and paste: In his 1865 publication, Mendel reported the results of his crosses involving seven different characteristics, each with two contrasting traits. A trait is defined as a variation in the physical appearance of a heritable characteristic. The characteristics included plant height, seed texture, seed color, flower color, pea-pod size, pea-pod color, and flower position. For the characteristic of flower color, for example, the two contrasting traits were white versus violet. To fully examine each characteristic, Mendel generated large numbers of F1 and F2 plants and reported results from thousands of F2 plants. What results did Mendel find in his crosses for flower color? First, Mendel confirmed that he was using plants that bred true for white or violet flower color. Irrespective of the number of generations that Mendel examined, all self-crossed offspring of parents with white flowers had white flowers, and all self-crossed offspring of parents with violet flowers had violet flowers. In addition, Mendel confirmed that, other than flower color, the pea plants were physically identical. This was an important check to make sure that the two varieties of pea plants only differed with respect to one trait, flower color. Once these validations were complete, Mendel applied the pollen from a plant with violet flowers to the stigma of a plant with white flowers. After gathering and sowing the seeds that resulted from this cross, Mendel found that 100 percent of the F1 hybrid generation had violet flowers. Conventional wisdom at that time would have predicted the hybrid flowers to be pale violet or for hybrid plants to have equal numbers of white and violet flowers. In other words, the contrasting parental traits were expected to blend in the offspring. Instead, Mendel’s results demonstrated that the white flower trait had completely disappeared in the F1 generation. Importantly, Mendel did not stop his experimentation there. He allowed the F1 plants to self-fertilize and found that 705 plants in the F2generation had violet flowers and 224 had white flowers. This was a ratio of 3.15 violet flowers to one white flower, or approximately 3:1. When Mendel transferred pollen from a plant with violet flowers to the stigma of a plant with white flowers and vice versa, he obtained approximately the same ratio irrespective of which parent-male or female-contributed which trait. This is called a reciprocal cross-a paired cross in which the respective traits of the male and female in one cross become the respective traits of the female and male in the other cross. For the other six characteristics that Mendel examined, the F1 and F2 generations behaved in the same way that they behaved for flower color. One of the two traits would disappear completely from the F1 generation, only to reappear in the F2 generation at a ratio of roughly 3:1

Here you guys go! 1865: Mendel's Peas Mendel was a monk in the Augustinian order, long interested in botany. He studied mathematics and science at the University of Vienna to become a science teacher. For eight years, starting in 1857, he studied the peas he grew in the garden of his monastery. He carefully pollinated the plants, saved seeds to plant separately, and analyzed the succeeding generations. He self-pollinated plants until they bred true - giving rise to similar characteristics generation after generation. He studied easily distinguishable characteristics like the color and texture of the peas, the color of the pea pods and flowers, and the height of the plants. When he crossed true-breeding lines with each other, he noticed that the characteristics of the offspring consistently showed a three to one ratio in the second generation. For example, for approximately every three tall plants, one would be short; for about every three plants with yellow peas, one would have green peas. Further breeding showed that some traits are dominant (like tall or yellow) and others recessive (like short or green). In other words, some traits can mask others. But the traits don't blend: they are inherited from the parents as discrete units and remain distinct. Furthermore, different traits - like height and seed color - are inherited independently of each other.

9:00 Starting with both an f4 or f5 is going to be better than not.* Bc you will have two stabilized genetics that are crossing and will gain some hybrid vigor in the initial offspring. So you could have a good generation to grow out from; though that generation's offspring will be more of a craps shoot. With tomatoes and stuff they're waiting until like f7+ as far as I know.

Anyone know, and where to confirm: Do male plants tend to pass on certain characteristics; and, do females TEND to pass on certain characteristics? I mean, do f2s typically take on the structure of the male, and the chemical composition of female (for example)? (I know there's no universal principle. ) And, are there certain cultivars that tend to pass on characteristics, or be dominant, when breeding? Thank you to anyone who has any information.
@Ultra96706
@Ultra96706 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, male plants play a big role. For example, when I’m breeding I look for a male that has huge, towering clusters of pollen sacs. This expression will be passed onto the female offspring, meaning, large colas. And to clarify, F2 is the very first filial generation of inbreeding. It’s the “key to the city.” Just to clarify. F1 generation makeup is 50% mom 50% dad. Now with F2, you can obtain 50% strain, 25% mom, 25% dad. So as you can see, good chance you can find a unicorn with odds like that going all the way back to both parent genealogy. I also have a few strains with limonene in them and any female that gets crossed to him is heavily dominated by a lemon terp and taste. Hope this helps!

Lol Seriously curious on checking resistance to PM and how that works. Recently I killed off a few males one was Ethos Fruity Pebble OG the smell was overwhelming when I chopped it up I kinda wish I kept the plant to play with but currently don’t have an area where I could keep it separated from the girls. I am getting interested in starting to chuck pollen & start to go down that rabbit hole for myself. Cheers Chris! I absolutely love your content! You always knock it out of the park sir ! I am curious about this topic also Rico. Here in Oklahoma we have to grow plants that can battle the high humidity issues, PM problems. I have started this process but unable to “treat it right” and keep running the strain over and inbreeding back. Very interesting content!

It is clear some genetics have a reduced vulnerability to pm. In my experience f1s from diverse stable lines are good places to start looking. Inbred lines (hate to generalize but.... ) these days are more often than not somewhat to highly vulnerable. To test a strains immunity you could certainly find out via poor nutrition. Put as much potassium as nitrogen in your starting mix or deny the plants copper and you'll find out real quick

Good talk... 👍 Kinda felt like he spent the entire video saying "well your just going to take the plants your wanting to breed and find those traits your wanting to use or take a step back*... I mean yeah that's definitely good info and you guys did absolutely touch base on a few things.. But for me the discussion was waaaaaay different then say the episode #23 where you discussed very closely similar things with Vader.. but I'm mean you take Vader's personality and how he can easily speak on his knowledge as well as feel comfortable discussing these things as if it's second nature then compare that with this gentleman and again you have a separate conversation as well.. Either way like I said it was a good talk for sure... Starting a OG Kush right now that I'm wanting to grow out and breed with a Bruce Banner x Kali Mist cross and I was thinking coming back to a Bruce Banner male.. but Both the cross's center of attention when you look it up on Supreme seed's describes it as an Awesome Morning Cup of coffee.. energetic and uplifting etc... And people everywhere that have tried the ol' godfather OG Kush knows it's as well a very social strain... I'm sure both of these if you went a little further in and got your darker trichomes cured it a little bit longer you be able to locate more of the couch lock effects but as far as Bruce Banner this has always been on of my favorites as well as ✌️ house strains (different dispensaries) out of Colorado.. Dopamine & another being Serotonin... I've always loved that good heavy mental and body high... And I'm not sure with these two combined yet that I'm wanting to try to steer away from the awesomeness of the great social strain with energetic and uplifting qualities... Kinda leaning more towards trying to run it with say a Green Crack male and then from there localize of doing a few pheno and brother sister matches to bring it up to something more "stable" and steady.. Love watching the show... It's always fun and I think the wide variety of people being brought on from high experience to your everyday successful beginners getting noticed is always a cool thing and educational especially when I get to see episodes like this one and with Vader ✌️🤓

I went to Jamaica a few years ago I kinda got duped into buying some trash weed. I had found a seed in it and kept it. Do yall think they could have given me wild flower? I’m kinda interested in growing it out and seeing if I can get some good bud breeding it.

After finding your best 2 & getting seeds from them .witch is better breed it back to the mother or father. How do you get f2 f3 f4 f5

Back to father is BX which is backcrossing. F2 is crossing brother and sister offspring of same parents , cross those there is your f3, cross those there is your f4 and so on and so on
