Hi Marta. I’m in Ontario, Canada and I’m in love with your gardens. I love the pathways too. Do you mind sharing if it’s gravel you use, and if so what size or kind. I’d love to try it but would hate to pick the wrong thing. It’s so nice to have someone that’s experienced something to share their thoughts. ❤️

I have only 3 david Austins, climbers/tall shrubs. Its mt first yesr growing them and ive had them for about three months. Some say i should prune my climbers and some say to leave them in the first 6 months. I live in a mediterrerean climate and am so worried i might kill them. Claire Austin first blooms were tiny snd i found the leaves to scorch easy. Graham thomas was the first to bloom and the primary canes are very upright and strong vivorous rose. My getrude jekyll is a slow starter. It had like maybe 10 roses but the fragrance on them is spectacular. I worry most about fungal and bugs and give it a weak solution of neem and pyrethrin once a week. I also use a slow release and some kelp and water soluble fertilizer once a week. Most my roses are 1 year old and im dying to get more. Even if in pots.

Last year I planted my first roses. I chose strongly scented ones: Racquel, Beverly, and Zephirine Drouhin. I can't wait for effects in this season.

Great info thank you. After having many David Austin roses over the years, now I have more kordes roses which I find better overall. Current favorite and great bloomer is summer romance 😊
@GardenwithMarta Жыл бұрын
Kordes roses are healthier I must agree. But the shape of petals and scent of DA roses are one of a kind :) So I grow them all 💚🤣 But I must say that Queen of Sweden is one of the healthiest roses I have in my garden.

One of my favorite roses is Polka. It's a climber & the blooms go from orange to peach to pink. The scent is beautiful also. When you throw away the dead leaves on the ground, do you throw out the mulch compost as well? If so, how many times a year do you do this? Thank you for sharing your tips.
@GardenwithMarta Жыл бұрын
I clean the leaves from the ground as often as I can. I think it’s the best prevention of black spot you can do.

When you do all your pruning, (hydrangeas & roses specifically) do you ever propagate any of the cuttings?

Hello Marta, I’m new here and I really like your content already. I was born in Prague, and I emigrated to Canada with my parents when I was little. I can still speak, read and understand Czech, which is a bit similar to Polish. My favourite rose is Abraham Darby ( David Austin, sunset colours and super scented), Princess Caroline de Monaco, and Fantin Letour, a very prolific old-fashioned climber. It only blooms once, but what a show! This Spring I have noticed a lot of canes have died back on many roses but there is no new growth coming, leaving very few canes on some of my roses. Do you have any advice? I am looking forward to your videos. 😊
@GardenwithMarta Жыл бұрын
I’d still wait a bit more. I guess you’re just at the beginning of your spring now? If the rose is alive it will have new shoots. Good quality fertilizer, mulch with compost and patience. Sometimes roses die after a harsh winter but usually they don’t and have some new shoots.

Hello! I am new with roses. I have a rose from David Austin, she is Vanessa bell. She is growing thin and leggy. Tiny flowers. Any suggestions 🤔

I ventured into roses last year, I got some proven winners rose shrubs and all of them were eaten by bunnies so hard, I couldn't even find the stub!!! imagine what it feels like waiting for snow to melt only to see all my shrubs eaten down to the stubs !! my climbing roses, my rhododendron and azalea , no more bloom buds .... only thing they didn't touch was hydrangea , so far ... we still have snow most everywhere, so I don't even know.. I live and garden in Minnesota , USA, zone 4b

It’s so true that if you have more of a particular plant you are more willing to experiment. 😂 I love the freedom of using my instincts! I tend to under prune all too often. They get over the shaggy look very quickly. Is it bad to trim back a branch after the first flush of bloom?
@GardenwithMarta Жыл бұрын
Not at all, I tend to prune pretty hard after the first flush if it’s a rose that likes to go crazy ;)
@OlenaPrytula Жыл бұрын
What the distance between 2 roses when you plant them?
@nela3934 Жыл бұрын
I'm somewhere in between - seemingly I'm stressed out to prune but when I start I cut and cut and cut until I think - there's almost nothing left, will it bloom at all?

Great video!

Marta, recommend you to use more long gloves - welding gloves (leather one with thick leather). They are cheap (at least in Ukraine) and effective.
