I know right? It's more just that people have respect for strangers and only converse in an informal setting or if they feel it's welcomed. It might also be our stoic expressions. All of these are Slavic habits, but people think it's just a Russian thing and not just cultural differences.

I think the thing is we don't have a culture of small talks here in Russia. Which is very important in Western culture. And this alone makes us look somewhat unfriendly and rude. Maks_wan of course it’s my personal opinion and I’m interested to learn yours and why , but having spent 30 years living and working all over Europe, and I have been in almost every city several times so I have a good idea about which cities are safest , have great public transport systems , great value for money ( all main stream euro cities don’t come near on prices of SpB or convenience of public transport ) and also popularity , SpB has been voted a few times in recent years best tourist city in Europe and also considered one of the safest , so in your opinion what city’s are better and why and what cities offer a better experience to foreigners in Russia, ones that have as much history or culture to see and are foreigner friendly , again I’ve seen most of the European Russian cities as far as the Urals and yes there are some nice ones but I don’t see them offerings the variety of things to do compared with SpB , and without doubt people of SpB are some of the most friendly you will ever find, it’s a tough package to beat , amazing parks , great architecture , waterways , palaces , museums , high quality restaurants without high price tag , amazing metro system that nowhere in Europe has such and only Moscow can compare in Russia , biggest city forest park in Europe , ski resort , amazing nature and huge lakes nearby , beaches in summer - it’s a pretty diverse place , Barcelona runs close but it costs twice to stay there with less options , Anywhere in Germany treble price and no sea , anything in uk forget as its expensive with crap food and terrible public service coupled with huge crime , Maybe Athens in Greece , Rome possibly but its a long way short of SpB in terms of variety and very expensive . Prague and Budapest very beautiful architecture but what more ? Paris - way way too expensive and overrated and full of arrogant French 😜

Interesting video style, too bad however you had little time to really see the city. It is a very friendly city filled with highly educated(the only people you saw over 20yo who did not have a college degree were tourists), open cultured city. I fell in love with it decades ago and kept returning before abruptly giving everything away in the US and moving to St Petersburg in 2000 and it has been great, every day an adventure and discovery started 3 businesses with very little money and they are still going well. Everything about living here is so much more open and stress-free compared to the US where stress and conflict is the rule. On thing when 4 guys from the west mention first off is how many really beautiful women are around, and more out at night socializing with their girlfriends than men. I expected those comments since all the other men do comment on it. Train travel in Russia is common and those 2nd class cabins can be comfortable and if a longer trip, friends are made with the sharing of food and talk with cabin mates. The open bays a more popular with women, not only cheaper but everything is out in the open so some comment they feel less closed in with random strange men as a 2nd class. But the open bays can be less restful because they often turn into a rolling party. Russians are very social but keep to themselves unless they sense it would not be intruding to talk, share food and drink with you. It is impossible to go someplace and NOT meet new friends. Also, what drone was used? I am anxious to get one and there are so many choices it is confusing. As a photographer(another side business) any questions about stills I can answer but Drones are a new direction but St Petersburg is one of the most desirable dronsubjects in the world.

Such a great video. Your production values are outta this world, Gareth! Some beautiful and memorable visuals, and warm narration, informative yet authentic. What was especially nice is the way you show the life of the city, people out and about or just chilling, everyday human life. In a place some folks will get out of their way to portray as another planet populated by, idk, cynocephalics, you make your viewers relate instead. God knows world needs more of this.
