I visited Russia multiple times and I traveled across Siberia all the way to Lake Baikal and I confirm that Russia is a very safe place to travel. I never felt uncomfortable there despite the language barrier as I don't speak Russian. The possibility to be scammed there is quite low comparing to other countries I visited. About the cost, I must admit that Russia isn't cheap but it's also not expensive at all and you can always find affordable and high quality places to eat, drink, and shop at. About Russian people, they are cool but don't expect them to give you that big fake smile right away; they will start to be more open and warm towards you when they get to know you and when they realize that you are an interesting person. They are deep and sophisticated people, not shallow and not silly! About being racist or not, I'm a Canadian citizen with a Middle Eastern background and I actually never felt any kind of discrimination or racism there against me or even against any other people. They're probably not used to seeing some people of colour but that doesn't mean they are racists. I think Russians in general might be a bit cautious to deal with foreigners in the beginning but again, once they get to know that person, they become curious and they start to ask so many interesting questions. They are great people but they are a bit different and that's what makes them unique:-)

The absolute truth is, we do not smile at all, our smile is a sign of attention that is given only to those who are of interest to us. We have a saying: if you smile for no reason, then you are a fool (crazy). So faces without a smile do not mean anything negative.
@tahseen812
@tahseen812 4 жыл бұрын
@@YN3_ I agree! To be honest, I prefer that someone smiles to me when it is sincere and real rather than giving me all these big fake smiles which don't mean anything. About looking like an idiot when you smile for no reason, it happened to me in my 1st trip to St. Petersburg, I was ordering coffee and was smiling to the girl I'm buying coffee from (I'm used to that because I live in Canada) and the girl working there was staring at me thinking that I am not normal and then my friend explained to me that I shouldn't be smiling to strangers in Russia 😁

You know people here in Western Siberia maybe can be racists but i will call them a non-converted racists - they just have no experience with people of other races and etnicities from outside of Russia so it's can be improved if more people will visit Russia's regions. And rude people is rude to everyone not only foreigners =)

@@tahseen812 Well, about smiling. It reminds me how I visited a cafe (in St.Petersburg, too) and was served by a waitress. She wasn't angry, or grumpy, or smth. Just one of those impassive faces... collected and serious. Very polite: "hello", "what would you like", "your order will be ready in", asking questions and specifing order. AND I TGOUGHT NOTHING OF IT!:) Actually, no, I thought "what a nice girl". Because of lack of unnessesary fussing among other things) After some time a group of 6-7 young german girls came. One of them at least was Russian, or half-Russian... she spoke the language and made their order. They were served by "my" waitress. After she left the table, they were all mimicing, gesticulating and talking about how she was serious and non-smiling. Some laughed about it, some were surprised. And I thought, like "WTF is wrong with you, people, why do you need fake smiles?!" 😊

I don't know how Russians feel watching this but I'm an English full-on Russophile and this made me so happy. I followed all your superb videos on this trip Gareth and the key to your success was actually your attitude. You went with an open mind and an open heart. If you do that Russia will fill both with wonderful things. And you were right about making friends for life. A Russian friend is a friend for life. Once they let you into their hearts you're a part of it for ever. You're hooked now, buddy.

Well. I dont really know how to call that feeling... I'm really pleased i guess. Pleased that more people will see us. Not Mother Russia, not The Russia and not even "russian did this", but us, common people living here, with our dreams, our friends. He nailed it at 4:33 - we just want to live peacefully and with the ones we care about ) And one more thing... There is not word for Cheers in russian. You can translate it, but cant use the same way. You can say Budem (short of Budem zdorovi, Let us be healthy) or Pognali (Lets go), but usually we say something short, something we feel in that moment and you want to drink FOR it. Like "Za znakomstvo" (For acquaintance), "Za vstrechu" (For meeting), "Za nashih dam" (For our ladies), "Za hozyaiku" (for our hostess)

Another great video Gareth. You did my dream vacation, a trip across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway. I have been to Saint Petersburg around six or seven times, usually for a week to ten days. But my dream is to do the Trans-Siberian trip. And even though Saint Petersburg is the only city in Russia I have been to, I agree with everything you said about safety. I have traveled solo all over the world and all over the US. Russia is definitely one of the safest places I have ever been. I hate comparing, but I'd have to say it is even safer than the US. As long as a person uses common sense, safety should not be a concern. The last thing I'd like to say (and I bring this up because you mention it in the video) is that as a person of color, I have never felt discriminated or had ANY type of racist incident while in Russia. In many ways I felt freer there than I do in the US. I can give you examples of why I say this. But you probably don't want to be bored with my travel stories. Suffice to say as a Latin, born and raised in Southern California, racism was never an issue for me while in Russia. Oh, and one more thing (promise this is the last thing). I couldn't agree with you more about trying to learn a few words or phrases before going to Russia. It comes in very handy. I actually learned watching a KZbin channel by Fedor Shirin called "Be Fluent in Russian". I didn't know much on my first trip. But what I did know was useful. And with each visit to Russia after that, I was able to build on my vocabulary. So I would encourage anyone thinking about visiting Russia to try learning a few words or phrases.

If you need an advice from Russian... Next time go for a Volga river trip. We have cruise vessels that slowly pace along this huge river. If Trans-Sib railroad moves you horizontally, Volga will drag you vertically. No caging yourself in train but facing the wind of river! There you will see a beautiful nature, ancient and modern cities (with stops and walkings in them), and everything else is gonna be amazing!

Disagree. There was A LOT of racism around Russia when I lived there. You probably didn't experience it because you don't speak and read Russian. Have a Russian friend translate for you apartment listings and you'll know what I mean. And the things Russians say on TV and radio are something you would expect from 1930's US.

wrt the color/race diversity and potential problems: most of Russians outside 3-4 big cities haven't seen black people at all, so some of them could be visibly surprised. What could be confusing is that the 'N' word in Russia doesn't have the same negative meaning like in the US, the school books contain the russian term "neger" describing the black race and many people operate with this word without any intention to abuse.
@trueuttar
@trueuttar 4 жыл бұрын
To be correct it's "negr", not "neger". It's from latin languages as spanish "negro" which means "black". Also is funfact that russian word for "black" is "черный" (chorny) and this word is an insult to a lot of non-russian immigrants from Central Asia and Caucasus

In Russia, black people are called Negr, because they are descended from the Negroid race. The word -'nigga' was coined by white americans. Only Americans in every movie call black people - niggas. As I understand it, in this way they are trying to humiliate their black population .. ☻

well, yeah, as being a citizen of Russia I can say that we don't mean it to be racism at all. It's just an explanation of black race at school. It's called "Negroid Race" in our schoolbooks. That's why some people can hear a word "Negr" = black person. IN Moscow you can find groups of africans, they always feel free and talk to everyone in public. Since there is only 0.3% of africans in Russia, if they go somewhere else, ex. Siberia, other people will be just surprised seeing them, becase they have never seen black skinned people. It's the same as a white person visits Nigeria in its province.

I love Russia, I have many good friends there so I’ve often gone through the visa request many times. I’ve always done it myself, it’s not hard. Having said that, it would improve tourism so much if the visa system was abolished. Especially having the register your visa locally irritating. I’ve certainly always felt safe in Russia, I’ve been to Paris with Russian friends and both myself and they felt less safe there than anywhere in Russia.
