It is really a shame they are tearing down these old buildings that have beautiful architecture, quite literally they are throwing away pieces of history. When I walk through an old building like that which is still in use today, it just makes me very, very happy, and the looks of the architecture inside and out just makes me feel that I'm in a time capsule from a more prosperous time. The elementary school that was built in the 50s I went to by Lake Huron had used Edwards Adaptahorn "fire horns" with Edwards 270-SPO pullstations up until mid 2003, and they got everyones attention when they were set off for a drill, and I would jump every time. I've been seeing less and less of these electromechanical types of fire alarms, and started collecting them whenever they pop up on eBay, of course starting with a 1950s era Edwards Fire Horn with an equally as old 270-SPO. Its nice to see that you are preserving history, keep up the good job!

It seems like even my district which is also in Summit County is following Akron Public Schools’s lead. Bath Elementary built in 1921 broke ground for the new building last Friday and construction on Bath will begin this summer, and the new Revere High School will be starting the construction process this summer (although it will take one more year to build since it is larger than Bath) with the new foundation and site package, along with construction of the new bus garage and renovations to Hillcrest Elementary (which will be renamed to Richfield Elementary School) and to Revere Middle School are also set to begin this summer. The new Bath ES is scheduled to open for the 2019-2020 school year and the new RHS will open the following year, 2020-2021. We desparately needed the new construction though as our building is slowly deteriorating beyond repair as we have had about 8 random additions and renovations since 1951 when they originally built our school. I won’t be around for the new building as I graduate next year, but I am with my school newspaper so I am closely following the construction process. The only areas of the original building that are being kept is the video production rooms, science lab and library, which were the most recent addition done in 1993.

In my high school the fire alarm system is the following: In the classrooms (almost all of them) have the Wheelock rendition of the gx-90. The strobes are 100 BPM (at least I think) and the horn is set on continuous. The hallways, band room, orchestra room, choir room, commons, (cafeteria) library, art rooms and such and such has strobes by Cerberus Pyrotronics and a mini-speaker. The speaker has no strobe, nor fire letterings, and is white. It sounds like a u-mmt and is also set on continuous. In the chemistry rooms near the outer edge of the building we have white Siemens zns’s on the ceiling on code 3. In small parts of small hallways and the band room and (at least) one bathroom, and pool, etc. We have u-mmt’s on the ceiling and on code 3. All are white except the bathroom and pool. We have a couple wheelock speaker strobes. The auditorium entrance and the pool has pyrotronic horns. The pool has some on the ceiling and wall. (They’re on continuous) And finally have old horns outside by (I believe) Cerberus pyrotronics and are on continuous. Edit: I forgot to mention that the school was built in 1997. Also good job on your videos

The air compressors below pressurize air to send to pneumatic thermostats and which lead to control boiler stokers, air washers, blowers, and dampers. Pretty interesting and I’m surprised it was still in service.

I have these same exact bleachers in my gym. My school isn't super old. It has a 1970s-1980s Edwards / GS system with pre-ada, 0.2cd HS's or RS's in most areas. Some have been upgraded to the Integrity series (15/75cd models). My wood shop has a GRINNELL ELECTRIC branded 4051. My art room and the hallway adjacent have an FS 450 series horn with a VALS 1.5cd strobe. The outdoor alarms are shocking SHGs. They all have survived more than 40 years of service. They have newer SIGA pull stations and genesis's in some pods. There is also in the staff area a very rare pre-integrity (15cd, async). The original system must have been some sort of early EST system, but now I can confirm it runs on a newer EST2. I would also like to mention that in the hallways, there are sprinkler/heat detector combos it seems. In all classrooms, there are newer SIGA 1st generation SD's. I would also like to talk about the security system. It has a newer ADEMCO security system with the keypad hidden behind a locked panel door in one of the hallways. The security sirens are a mystery, though. They seem to be some sort of piezo with a red LED-like light. All the EXIT signs are modern. The fire door magnets are unknown. I hope to get most of these items in the summer of 2021, when remodeling is supposed to take place.

Yep, the Simplex 2001-style March Time! The hospital I used to be a janitor at had a couple of voice-evac 2001 panels along with newer Simplex 4100-series panels, and the non-renovated areas had incandescent lights (Simplex 2903) flashing in that same March Time (I preferred the real strobes in the renovated areas.) The hospital was built in the 1930s, and was added onto in the 1940s, 1950 and 1982, and has had some renovations since. It mostly uses speaker alarms (newer rectangular Simplex 4903 speaker/strobes in the renovated areas and old 2902-9711 LifeAlarm speakers on the 2903 light plates elsewhere.), but the radiation therapy wing (part of the 1982 addition) has Space Age 2DCD+AV32 horn/lights, and the family suites wing on the fourth floor has Simplex TrueAlert horn/strobes. Glad I was never in those areas when they would do an audible test of the fire alarms!
@OldSchoolFireAlarms6 жыл бұрын
WOW, talk about a mix-matched system, that hospital certainly had one.
@ZakWolf6 жыл бұрын
Oh yes. It's also pretty much a half-conventional and half-addressable system. The renovated areas largely use addressable pull stations and smoke detectors, while other areas mostly have conventional ones, but the elevators have addressable TrueAlarm detectors for elevator recall. They've also been replacing the 80s ESL smoke detectors that were installed with the 2001 panels in 1982 with new Simplex TrueAlarm detectors throughout this and the last decade. I wish I knew what they had for alarms before Simplex came into the picture in 1982. I did see a big cover plate over a pull station that was most likely covering up where an old coded pull used to be.

@OldSchoolFireAlarms3 жыл бұрын
Newer fire alarm systems would fail much sooner in a serious fire then the much older systems. The reason is because the new systems are constructed of cheap, inferior materials and many parts are plastic.

Never understood why they always bricked up windows on old buildings like that. I mean I know it was for energy, but then you make it so the classrooms or dark and uninviting for learning, OR you just spend more energy on lighting. I went to school in an old building before they took the old windows out. It was drafty but the steam heat was always too hot anyway. A few years after I graduated they put in smaller windows. Now the building is totally gone.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%, not only did it cut out all that wonderful natural light, bricking up the windows didn't really save that much money in energy cost. What the powers to be didn't seem to understand is that the sun hitting the windows actually created more heat in the classrooms. Bottom line, the money it cost in labor and materials to brick up the windows didn't save any money, not to mention how it completely ruined the appearance of the school buildings. Somebody who wanted to make some money sold the school boards a bogus claim and they bought it hook line and sinker.

I can't stand it when these old schools get demolished. So much gets destroyed. All history in the building, the spirit of the school that the students and faculty over the years spent decades creating. When I was in elementary school, we had an old school building build in the late 50s to early 60s. And then when I was in 3rd grade, we had to move to a new school building in a more populated community. The reason for this was that the old school had to bus in students from new communities to keep its population up. But one the new school was built in and around those newer communities, they couldn't do that anymore, so the old school had too close. Luckily it was saved from demolition by someone suggesting that the school be turned into a specialty school for the science program. Transitioning to the new school was tough, because we had to create a whole new school identity and spirit. I know that it must be hard for the students of these demolished or soon to be demolished schools. knowing that their beloved school where there were so many friends made, things learned, memories made is just.... gone. I really wish they would take into account the historical and sentimental value of these old schools when deciding if they should demolish it or not. And they would see that the answer is almost always, should not.

How come in Akron. The windows are different. And. Do the trip bells work or not
@OldSchoolFireAlarms6 жыл бұрын
Many of the windows were blocked-up to conserve energy in the 1970's. Yes, the trip bells did work that were attached to the pull rods.
@DoubledDoubled6 жыл бұрын
Old School Fire Alarms that’s cool. They work. Now when. This gets delmoshied are u gonna. Try to save the fire. Alarm system and the bells and the pull stations

I thought simplex did away w the 2001 in 1987
@OldSchoolFireAlarms4 жыл бұрын
Simplex may have stopped production in 1987, however they were still selling the 2001 model. More than likely they were trying to get rid of the few remaining they still had in stock.

@@OldSchoolFireAlarms , so u had whatever was left over from their assembly line along w the 2120
@OldSchoolFireAlarms4 жыл бұрын
@@OrthodoxChristianBeliever Yes, it is very common for companies to have excess inventory after production of a particular model, whether it be a fire alarm control panel, washing machine, car, etc. Just because something is no longer in production does not mean there are not a few still in inventory that are for sell.
