i'm from Brazil but Asatru just atracts me like...a lot! I allready know how to sing this song, Yggdrasil and some by Wardruna, even that i don't understand most of it, i still loves it and i want to learn how to speak norwegian and sweedish
@adrianaslund86052 жыл бұрын
Get into Vanatru instead. Asatru was probably brought by the stone age battle axe culture. Vanatru is more about fertility gods, elves and according to roman scholars the cult of Freya was associated with cannabis. If your'e into that. Nordic elves are more like nature spirits like detached morally neutral angels. Freyr is their king. We still dance around his big green dong during midsummer celebrations. Which is good because otherwise our harvest would fail. Jesus doesn't really get involved with that.

This song is about a christian man rejecting a pagan because she is a pagan. Nothing to do with asatru.

I absolutely love this song! There are many different interpretations from different bands. If you wnat to hear some metal versions i'd recommend you the folk-metal band In Extremo or the symphonic/folk metal band Haggard (with Italian lyrics and my personal fav)

I vote for In Extremo's version as well, as a gamer you'll surely appreciate they played it 'live' in Gothic! Only the german version though, sadly :S
@n0namesowhatblerp3623 жыл бұрын
I hate that in extremo obviously didnt even try to pronounce the swedish language even a little bit. Germans can do better, a lot better thats why its so obvious they didnt even try. Worst part is a lot of germans think in extremo is singing in sold german because of it. The germans of ww2 tried steeling our culture enough as it is ffs. They made it dirty and racist simply cause they love our culture.
@n0namesowhatblerp3622 жыл бұрын
I do have to say im extremly disappointed with In Extremos pronounciation of the song. They are german and could have done better. When i listen to their version it sounds like they never even tried to sing it right. Did they even hear it kind of thing... i know germans can do better thats all.But the melody is cool as a metal version. - a swede

it's a love song between a noble Christian knight(sir Mannelig) and a pagan women who fell in love with him and wanted to marry him and promised him various gifts like a shirt of fine silk 12 great steeds, and a sword, always the same the knight declined and says you're not a christian women which broke her heart. I'll drop there lyrics here Early one morning before the sun did rise And the birds sang their sweet song The mountain troll proposed to the fair squire She had a false deceitful tongue Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no To you I will give the twelve great steeds That graze in a shady grove Never has a saddle been mounted on their backs Nor had a bit in their mouths To you I will give the twelve fine mills That stand between Tillo and Terno The mill stones are made of the reddest brass And the wheels are silver-laden To you I will give the gilded sword That jingles from fifteen gold rings And strike with it in battle as you will On the battlefield you will conquer To you I will give a brand new shirt The lustrous best for to wear It is not sewn with needle or thread But crocheted of the whitest silk Gifts such as these I would gladly receive If you were a Christian woman But I know you are the worst mountain troll From the spawn of Necken* and the devil The mountain troll ran out the door She wailed and she shrieked so loudly "Had I gotten that handsome squire From my torment I would be free now" Sir Mannelig, Sir Mannelig won't you marry me For all that I'll gladly give you You may answer only yes or no Will you do so or no

I knew that song before, too. It is amazing. Nice reaction-video. Thumbs up! :) Another Viking song, that is even more beautiful, is "Yggdrasil" from the band "Voluspa" (Völuspá - Die Weissagung aus der Lieder-Edda). Give it a try. But I haven't found such a nice fan-made video about that song, like the song "Herr Mannelig" has got.

Garm is the dog in norse mythology that guards the gates of hell. Hence, Garmarna means The Hounds of Hell, in old norse. My favourite line of any song in all the world is put back into music by Garmarna in Bläck. It says something like: "Förr skall hälleberget rämna såsom is " ~Before I stop loving you again the bones of the world will be ripped asunder as the ice of a northern river being ripped asunder in springtime. "Hälleberg" means the polished rock that peaks above the soil in all swedish forests. These smooth stretches of rocks are the inspiration for Yggdrasil, they resemble roots of a giant tree. So the image the poet evoces is for the very foundation of the earth to be set in absolute turmoil. By letting "hälleberget" be ripped to threads like the ice of a northern river in springtime. So few words, such an overwelming image. Garmarna did not write this, they used ancient texts for their songs. And Garmarna are not swedish, they are Trönds. They come from the region between sweden and Norway that was an independent republic until the 13th centuary, Tröndelag. It is as much related to Trondheim as to Sweden.

Nice video and this is my second favorite version only beaten by In Extremos version (tho they stray from the original quite a bit as they have a different playstyle and mispromounced a few words) because my father used to sing it to me when i visited him and could not sleep or was depressed and had some friends come over with the full gear (highland bagpipe , the appropriate drums and so on) on silvester to play it for the whole street he lived in... sadly he passed away two years ago and yeah... Musically garmanas version is better but emotionally nothing can beat in extremos version for me at least...
