To Vinterfrid (and anyone interested) The song is about a passage in the Beowulf saga which was written down in England (!!!) in the 1200's. However it takes place in Östergötland (!!) which at that timewas a farmer/collectors community (På svenska Vende-tid eller Vendel-tid = 600's) It is written as if the Öst-götar (= Ost Geats not Ostrogoths) were christian which they certainly were not. ...so it is a story very much changed by the storytellers somewhere in England

Love this song from Garmarna, it is in Old Swedish, it is about a woman who is seen as a mountain troll and speaking about that man on marriage

It's Late Modern Swedish (yngre nysvenska), it was spoken from 1732 until around 1880, though we can still understand it. Old Swedish (fornsvenska) is way older.

Not sure what you mean by "original" since the song is quite old and was (re)popularized by Folk och Rackare in the 70ies

My favourite version is by the Argentinian soprano Ranthiel, unfortunately, Haggard made her take it down for copywrite infringement, she then recorded it in Turkish to get round that.

Necken in now day swedish is Näcken. he was a supernatural male water creature that lore people near the lake/river with his violin or sometimes flute. just to make them come close to the river so he could drown them. Just to a form of concept what they ment with "The spawn of Necken and the devil"

I believe you can also interpret his answer of that she is not a "Christian woman" as being that they fundamentally are not the same (she being a troll), and that she would not be accepted in his society - and also that he would not leave his society for her. There is also the fact that she is a troll, and they are often depicted as creatures who trick humans into making bad decisions, often leading to the human's death. Creatures called "Trolls" are very prevalent in Scandinavian folk tales in general, and they can have pretty much any appearance that suits the story. They commonly live in the woods and are distinctly non-human at the very least. Often they have powers that can influence the harvest and nature. From the top of my mind I know 2 stories that have many variations: 1: Trolls would kidnap human children and replace them with their own spawn. The human parents would be unaware of this, until the child grew older and might start acting strange. Very unruly children would then be suspected of actually being a troll's child instead. If there were any consequences to this, I don't know. 2. When humans had festivities, the trolls might be tempted to join in - incognito. Trolls can be dangerous to humans, so young men were taught that if you ever see a tail sticking out from under a woman's skirt you should discreetly tell the woman that her tail is showing. The troll would then thank him for being polite and leave.

My favorite take on this song is by Folk och Rackare, their record Rackarspel is filled with beautiful songs. 20 or so years later Garmarna made their version which has a more modern/dance sound, it's OK too, but if I have to chose, I'd pick the more traditional version

@@emmelisen It was a term used in the 90ies that simplified translates to music played at raves. Not saying that Garmarna played that kind of music right off the bat, but many songs had some influences from there

Came back again, just to throw another recommendation. Garmarna, Vänner och fränder check their own official video. (It's an old one from 1996) Sadly no english subs for that one though. Either this song or varulven.

Beowulf (English, Beowulf, pronunciation: /ˈbeɪəwʊlf/) is an elegiac, heroic epos, written in Old English, which takes place in southern Scandinavia during the Migration Period. The only surviving manuscript is dated to between 975 and 1025, but the text is believed by various language experts to have originally been written at different times during the period from 700 to 1000.

I think this song was popularized by Garmarna in the 90s. You should check out their song Varulven (The Werewolf), that song has also been covered by a german band called Saltatio Mortis. Wer kann segeln ohne Wind (Who can sail without wind) is another song by In Extremo with partly swedish lyrics, featuring Johan Hegg from the swedish death metal band Amon Amarth.

Born and raised in Sweden for 70 years I have to admit that I've never ever heard of this song, let alone "Herr Mannelig". I assume that they might be familiar within certain minority groups, but it's not anything like a Swedish cultural heritage. Doesn't sound to bad though.

Trolls are pagan. So are we over here. So lets go to Folkvang, Frejas hall, or Oden's hall, Valhall, instead of paradase. Less boring. You dont need to hear the 440.000 Jehovas witnesses wining for eternity. Thats a bliss! ❤
