Thank to you I finally am starting to figure this out. Quite a learning curve if you've never used Basecamp. My old crappy Garmin 5 years ago could just import from Google Maps; you could right click in google maps somewhere and it would send directly to the garmin. The HD Rideplanner used to do that as well. But my new Garmin NUVI can't do any of that and after a lot of pain, I finally faced the reality that Basecamp is probably the only way.

@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 4 жыл бұрын
On the Windows version of Basecamp after you have finished panning around, select the *Insert Point* tool then hover over the last point you plotted. You need to do a bit of precision mouse work but when you get it right a black target will appear around the point. Wjen you see that, left click and then you can continue plotting. Also get a look at the Live Stream I made on BaseCamp for windows. I go over it all there.

Awesome video, thanks! What happens if you accidentally leave your custom route when you are out driving/riding? Does it navigate you back to the nearest waypoint and then resume the route as you planned it?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 9 жыл бұрын
Paul Baruga If you clicked "Navigate to the start of this route" when you started it will keep re routing you back to the start point of the route. If you didn't click "Navigate to the start of this route" when you started it will try and navigate you to the closest waypoint or instruction to your current location. It will keep doing that until you cancel the route. If you pick up the route then it'll continue navigating the route from that point forward. It's easy to cancel the route if you deviate from it and easy to resume also.

Wonder if you can help. My friend and I both use Bascamp for our BMW Navigator's. We will both from time to time create a motorcycle route. We then email that route to each other and that's when the problem begins. When we download that route into our own Bascamp it will show the grey coloured track that is correct but the pink route initially is just straight lines, if you then re-calculate the route it dramatically changes the route, its almost as though it think it knows best! We have both Basecamp's set up the same and have tried changing the navigation preferences but it does the same thing. Why does it not follow the original planned route? Regards

How well does garmin plan/deal with small/new off road trails that dont show up on well on google ect.
@JosephByrne

If they are considered to be roads they should be navigable. If they don't appear as roads you can still navigate them using the Offroad driving profile so long as you plot via points.

That's great, i've got an eTrex 30x and have found the best way is to create a route from waypoints, although you have to watch you don't exceed the limit. Creating a route from a track doesn't really work as basecamp throws up different distances when using driving/motorcycling etc. Most cyclist's want a unit that can give turn by turn but it's very hard to get that working properly.

Hi. I'm trying to make a route going up the A697 for newcastle to scotland. Everytime i click its going off onto different surrounding roads instead of sticking to the A697. Any ideas what could be causing it?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 9 жыл бұрын
+MuddySump Most likely you are zoomed too far out when you are placing your navigation points. When you are zoomed out even if you are only slightly wide of the road it'll think you want to go down a side street. Try zooming in or place Waypoints on the road and create a route from them using this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJK5i5x_pZiHbc0

Great video! How do you get Basecamp to snap lines to roads? Mine is plotting every single line between two points as a straight line. it's not snapping to the curvature of the roads like yours is when you place points on a route. Is it a setting somewhere?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
You need to change the activity profile to "Driving" then it will snap to the roads. It's currently set to "Direct" which is only useful for your helicopter.

Ive been using Basecamp for some years now, but learned some cool new things from your tutorials. Love the trick where you create a route from a track. The tip with 'Direct' is great. I noticed you are navigating on your 590 based on the route. Is this what you would recommend? Other tutorials seem to focus on navigating based on the Track, created from the route. If you could do a tutorial on the difference between routes, trip and tracks, that would be great.
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. There is some confusion around the terms really. A device can only navigate a route. If you upload a track to a device it's not navigable. You can create a route from a track but not the other way round in my experience. I'll look at creating a video showing the differences soon.

Thanks so much for saving my sanity. I have found it a steep learning curve moving from TomTom to Garmin and particularly getting to grips with Basecamp. Have lots of route planning to do for our next USA trip and doubt I'd have got anywhere without your videos. Thanks again. Noting that Garmin's videos are so out of date, they make things worse rather than better! By the way, I am not sure if this is totally correct but with Basecamp running and my Garmin Drivesmart connected to the PC via USB, Basecamp does not seem to see the device maps and other contents unless Garmin Express is active and connected too. This was driving me bananas. Also, I have not found away of copying the purchased additional map located on the microSD card to the PC. There is an option in Garmin Express to copy the main map but not my additional map?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback John. That's interesting that you can only see additional maps when Garmin Express is running too. I have only got experience working with a single map so I don't have any advice in that respect. I think Garmin were trying to figure out ways to prevent users using maps on multiple devices and computers. Using Map Source, one map code could unlock the map on as many computers as you liked so maybe they are trying to reign that in.

Great tutorial!! I have been using mapsource for years and found it a bit simpler than Basecamp. I was wondering when you're creating a route and you hit escape and you want to go back to the route, how do you "extend" the route. Normally I would just right click on the last Waypoint in mapsource to extend the route and would carry on routing. I can't seem to find that option in Basecamp. It allows me to insert a single new point, but this is time consuming as may be adding dozens of new points to complete route. Hope I have been clear enough in my question. Thx
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
Excellent Question. So I did a bit of research and figured this out just now. The insert point tool actually has 2 functions (wish I'd included this in the video). So here's the procedure. 1. Select the route you were creating in the list. 2. Click on the "Insert" point tool. 3. Hover the pointer dead centre over the last point on your route, after a small delay a dark circle will appear around it (have patience). 4. Left click and you can continue plotting.I wish I'd known that about 6 years ago. Best wishes.

Thank you. I "think" I'm getting somewhere. On both my laptop and PC I installed the version of Basecamp that didn't have much of a map. On my PC I hadn't installed Garmin Express yet. So I uninstalled Basecamp, installed Garmin Express and did to install Basecamp with that. Right now I've got about a half hour to wait. Hopefully this does the trick. Thanks a ton. I deliver oversize freight. They give us the route to take. A wrong turn here can be a fine of $50,000 US or even more. I'm comfortable within a few hundred miles of my home because I know the roads. My GPS never lines up with my route though. So I'm not very comfortable when I get to far away from home. On my laptop, which is what I'll be using on the road, even with the device plugged in I didn't get much of a map. Ideally I'll be able to get the complete one on there if I can get this figured out on the PC here. Once again thank you.

+Inkerman1980 When you connect the device to the computer and fire up Basecamp you should see the device in the library panel on the left. Under the device you'll see a folder called "Internal Memory." Select that and all the tracks and routes on the device will appear in the section underneath. Select the tracks you wish to delete and press the delete key (or right click "delete."). This should remove the tracks (or active logs) from the device. If this doesn't work message me and I'll look into it further.

+jobybyrne Hi Joby, thanks for your reply. Have attempted this procedure previously but yet again even with your direction it fails to delete the "Active Logs" in the "Internal Storage" window, (I believe this is to be your described "Internal Memory"). When I right click on any one of the tracks an "Open" window appears with the following descending list:... Show on Map... Playback... Send To... Sort By... Copy... GeotagPhotos Etc.......... If I right click delete or delete from the keyboard, nothing. My original assumption has been that these tracks can be directly deleted from within the Nav V, I guess this is incorrect.... My overall concern is that the unit is filling up with many unwanted tracks. Does this have any significant impact on available memory within the unit?

@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Taylor Hi Rob, from what I remember that means that it won't alert you when you are passing a Way Point. E.g. "Passing 11 Queens Gate on the Right." It will give you the route directions though to navigate you on the route. You should be able to turn this setting on on the device if you want each Way Point to be announced.

+Robert Taylor Yes that's correct. You should be able to set the proximity alerts on your device. I would set two "via points" and the route line would just be a straight line and not follow the road. After an hour of searching online forums for answers I discovered that once I connected my Garmin to my PC, then loaded the map from my GPS to Base Camp and used that map rather than a Topo map, THEN it worked as advertised! Do you have a work-a-round to change/remove the huge flags displayed at every via/way point? Annoying when viewing zoomed out. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Al. I know exactly what you mean. When you view the overall route on the device and zoom out all you can see is a load of giant flags. I don't think there is a way to change that sadly. I think the symbol for Waypoint is fixed.

When I try to create a route, every time I add a new point it doesn't show as one continue route. It's as if every point has to go though a certain point so i end up with 1 point with about 10 lines coming out of it instead of one continual circular route. Any ideas?? (Hope that makes sense) Thanks

I had that problem too, learning Basecamp is an exercise in frustration for sure. I found out I was able to highlight two routes (or more), right click, and there was a "combine routes" option.

Very good video EXCEPT that my Nuvi 42 won't open the route I planned. Apparently it doesn't support this. Is there any way around this or do I have to buy another device. Can you tell me of any other devices that won't do this? Thanks
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
Hi. I looked up the specs and unfortunately the Nuvi 42 doesn't include "Trip Planner" which is the app that is required to import and work with routes. I looked up the specs here buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/automotive/previous%20models/nuvi-42lm/prod120958.html. Any device that has trip planner should work with the method described in this video. I'm not aware of any work arounds as such. On the device you could set a route destination then choose another destination and add it to the existing route as a via point to build up a route but that is not ideal.

I completed my route in Basecamp and exported it to my Garmin. When I select the route I'm given an option to "Select Next Destination". When I select the next waypoint right after my home address the Garmin plots out the route to that waypoint. The Garmin shows the first waypoint as the destination and then provides me with the option of selecting the next waypoint with the green "GO!" button. Do I need to select the green GO! button everytime I come to the next selected waypoint? I haven't had a chance to try out this route. Thanks for any information!
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
When you kick off a route and choose a Waypoint as your next destination, the device will navigate you to that point and then commence the route. It effectively navigates you to your chosen start point so you can ride your route as you may not be at the start point when you set off. You can also choose a point half way if you'd rather start the route from there.
@JJP1960
@JJP1960 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information. So in this case, my start point is my home address and there are 5 or 6 points along the way. If I select the first point (which is my house), the route I planned will continue all the way to the end without any intervention from me? In other words, when I view the route in my Garmin, each point begins with the green GO! button. When I start my route from my home address and my vehicle reaches each point the route will continue uninterrupted?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. You'll see in this video at 3:18 I'm not actually on the route, however, I pick a start point and the device navigates me there and then kicks off navigating the route. You'll see later in the video at 3:41 I pass a Waypoint on the route and the device doesn't stop it continues to the next one.

+jobybyrne Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your thorough and accurate instructions. I will try out one of my custom Basecamp routes tomorrow and see if it works like I planned it. I have a six hour journey. I also created some custom routes in Google maps and exported the .kml file as you detailed in your other video. I do think I prefer the Basecamp method since there seems to more route control available. I found it difficult to correct a route in Google Maps if I made a mistake. But it may be that way since I'm still a neophyte with this. :-)

On the device go to *Apps --> Trip Planner* and they should be in the list there. If it is an older device go to *Where to --> Custom Routes* and the routes will be there. If you don't have options for Trip Planner or Custom routes your device may not support custom route planning.

@@JosephByrne Thanks so much for the reply. I should say first I use the current version of Base Camp and Nuvi 2455 (2014) with 8.30 current software. In Trip Planner, the only routes that are there are those you create yourself within Trip Planner. I have several in there based on saved waypoints. Using Trip Planner, i get undesired results. Creating routes within Base Camp, I accept the results and they are saved on the list on the left side. With the Nuvi plugged into the PC, i transfer all the waypoints and the routes appearing at the bottom. I see a yellow and then green checkmark showing the data transferred. Unplugging and starting Nuvi, I see all the waypoints as Saved items, but no routes appear anywhere in the device. Did they not transfer? I tried Send To Device for each route and that didnt help. When I try to select a waypoint as a destination, it creates the undesired route result and there is no info or way to select a route I planned and saved and transferred. Whats wrong? I spent almost 7 hours today planning a trip for tomorrow, and the only thing I can think of to do is take a laptop in the car and manually follow the route created in BaseCamp. This makes no sense! Why do I have a GPS?! I searched the web and Garmin help pages but there is no info about how to access and use routes created in BaseCamp, just abundant info about how to create routes.

Ok so I thin the routes aren't being imported automatically. So go into Trip Planner, click on the three bar menu on the top left and select import routes. The routes you sent to the device should appear in a list and you can select them all and import them. Once imported they will be available to navigate on the device within the trip planner app.

From their website "IBM-compatible computer running WIN Vista x64 and later. App cannot be installed on Win 7 (no SP) as this is not compatible with .Net framework 4.6" So if you take it literally it can't be installed on Windows 7 unless you have installed a service pack. I think that's what (no SP) means. If you install the updates you should be all set.

The Google map procedure is just popular because lots of people are familiar with Google maps. You can do everything in Basecamp with a bit of patience to get over the initial learning curve. Once you've got a feel for it you'll be flying.

Triambic pentameter Basecamp typically uses the map from your device so in order to see that plug your device into the computer and the map will refresh with more detail, or you can select the map from your device from the drop down list once it's connected to the computer. I describe that in more detail here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHLSg4Gfq9JneKMm45s. With some of the newer devices you can install the map to your computer as described at the start of this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHLSg4Gfq9JneKM.

AAARRRGGG! I followed your instructions and uploaded it to my Nuvi 58 and it worked beautifully. However after a few uses the Garmin GPS decided to recalculate the route and sends us back on the highway. Is there any way to prevent the Nuvi 58 from changing the route?

Have you tried changing the settings on the device? There may be a setting to avoid minor roads. If you change the route calculation settings to avoid highways and remove any other restrictions it may stop sending you back on the highway.

On older units like the Zumo550 you just ride onto the route and it'll pick up from there. No need to tell it anything. I do it quite frequently. Same as when I've missed a turn and navigate back onto the route. (I have auto recalculate turned off). Massive retrograde step on these latest units.
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
It does that also if you stray off the route and reconnect with it. Having the opportunity to choose which way point you want to start from is an extra feature. It's convenient if you want ride directly to a point mid way around the route for example. I've owned a 550, 660 and 590LM. Each has been an improvement over the last if you take the time to learn how to use it. I do miss the 550 for nostalgic reasons though.
@blacktiger955i
@blacktiger955i 8 жыл бұрын
OK so it takes the place of "Do you want to navigate to the start of the route" on older units. I suppose I see it has a use. Tomtom Rider 410 has a similar "feature". Does it give you view of them on the map (as tomtom does) rather than on a list? I'm thinking that in the middle of France you might not always know which one you want to start at unless you can relate it to where you actually are.
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 8 жыл бұрын
In that case go to the preview map screen and you'll see the Way Points in order along the route. Or just hit that Way Point and get the unit to start navigating from there then press the top of the map screen and view the route map to see where you are relative to where your bike is, the next via point and the wider country.
