Garmin GPSMAP 498 Backlight Repair

I got the bulb out of my Lowrance Elite 5 now I just have to order a new one. I will say your Garmin unit seems to be made a lot better internally. Everything snaps in with my Lowrance not nearly as many screws, I actually broke my bulb trying to pry open the backlight case since it didn't screw together. Now I have tiny shards through out.

Has anyone ever did this replacement but ran into the issue of "delamination" during disassembly? It's when the LCD slightly separates from the display panel, causing black spots on the LCD. This happened to me and not sure how to get rid of them.

My unit's backlight turns on fine at startup but goes black after about 30 minutes. Was it ever determined that this could be the result of a bad bulb or the whole display assembly itself?

Hi Maxim, thanks for the vid, looks great. My GPSmap 520s display backlight comes on during startup, but then turns off and no amount of adjusting brings it back on, until I restart, then it beautifully lights up the Garmin logo before switching off the backlight, leaving me very frustrated. Clearly the backlight can work, but either it can only work very briefly, or something else is switching it off (maybe low Voltage, or a faulty dimming sensor?) Do you think it is worthwhile to try replacing the light? So frustrating because it works perfectly, just very difficult to read!

Great video! A question for those of you who fixed their backlight issue. Before you repaired it, did the light go on for about 2 seconds when you first turned it on and then it went dark??? I know about the light adjustment but that didn't make any difference. It seems like mine will light up only on the initial startup Garmin 498 screen and nothing else. When I put a flashlight to the screen I see that the unit is working correctly except for the screens are not lit. Would replacing the the back light fix the problem or do you think its something else.

Update for others doing this repair...I did this same repair on a garmin 521s (5 inch screen) using the light from cfl warehouse that is recommended for the 498 and it worked fine. Same size as mentioned in my previous comment

Awesome! Well for me the problem is the LCD only can be see it when i put some light near to the screen. So i think the problem is backlight problem do you think? Great tip by the way!

Great video thanks. I have a issue and I was wondering if you could help? I just bought a used boat which came with Garmin GPSMap 498. My sonar isn't working. I thought most likely it would be the transducer. The Garmin unit had some rattling going on inside so I popped it open to have a look. Apparently some how all the wires on the six wire connector were cut or broken from the external 18 pin connector. Would it be possible if you could give the pin out for the 6 wire cable from the pcb board to the 18 pin connector? My colors are Red,Blue,Yellow in the shielded cable black, white and ground. I would really appreciate it. Garmin will not give a schematic,

Great Video Thanks. I'm doing the same repair but I notice on the ccfl warehouse they have a stock 111mm by 82mm x 2.4 mm that says its for the the garmin 498. I notice your measurement was 80 mm. Did you get a custom size made or was a 80mm available? aped CCFL 111mm x 82mm x 2.4mm. Used in Garmin GPSMAP 298 and 498
