Theoretically you are correct. From my experience crappie fishing if the transducer is not turned up you can't see the fish just under the surface. I've also learned that turning up the tranducer reduces the ghost tree.

One of the best crappie fishermen that do the tournament trail, they run two garmin and two transducers, they turn one up one notch higher, to watch their jig hit the water, and them both coming back to boat. Kentucky

Got to learn your set up. 1) zero degree vs 8 degree offset, 2) Tolling motor or pole being level, 3) Are you pitching into the center of the cone, 4) Are you fishing in dead calm vs chop water. I can tell your for sure that fishing w/the 8 degree on the trolling motor makes it more difficult for you to see the splash.. Got to find the sweet spot. Thanks again for another great discussion!

So a foot or foot 1/2 closer to the water but how close to the boat will that be? Very interesting. I'm fishing a very clear Reservoir and would like to know because I think it will make an big difference while starting short and shallow.

Randy good info as usual. I use to have transducer mounted on pole with 0 degree never really paid attention to how close I could see my topwater> I know it was pretty close. Have changed now to trolling motor mount on both boats. I check tomorrow when I'm out and see how close I can see it. I have the depth set at 1 ft even though it is a little deeper

Randy I wonder if angling it down one click it would help it be clearer in forward mode when checking out deeper brush piles? Seems like around 30 or so feet it gets weak & the image gets very grainy

I wish you would actually show the transducer and what position it is normally in relation to level, or water surface, then what it looks like one click up. Lvs32 and 34.

Great info and I agree with you in theory but respectfully disagree in practicality or application and here's why,.... my older nitro bass boat nose is not level and has a slightly downward or negative cant towards the water which cause my trolling motor to not be level either. I tried to shim the TM as much as I could to be level but still has a downward angle of attack. Therefore by rotating my transducer up 1 click it does help me in my case and I have seen that i can see my jig hit the surface better for me and my application. I only mentioned this for those similar instances of when the trolling motor is not perfectly level to start.. Otherwise, I believe you are spot on.

I agree with you on the I level transducer but for the purposes of the video I’m considering a level transducer. Another thing you have to take in consideration for an unlevel transducer is how the tilt affects it when turned sideways.

Totally agree, but as you point out you do gain a little and what you lose shooting above the water is equal to what you lose shooting behind your boat, which is useless anyway because it's unfishable ,under the boat

When you turn it from down to forward, it's about 30degrees, so it points towards the surface with an angle about 7.5degrees which with som math would be about 19feet of water you don't see the surface, if the transducer offset is at 2.5feet. 2.5 / tan (7.5) = 18.98 which is basically 19 feet. With transducer offset at 2feet would be a blind spot of about 15 feet. But the bait would probably show even closer to the boat since it's rarely swimming in the surface, most likely some feet below the surface or wherever you present it. 👍👍

In another video you address offset in the settings. Essentially the distance the transducer is below the surface. Changing the offset has let me see the splash even when the boat isnt level due to being in front by myself or whatever. Offset DOES make a difference!

There are 6 beams off the lvs 34 not 5. Also depending on the distance on the transducer below the waters surface, there is software adjustments you should raise or lower the beam with.

In the sonar set up you can adjust the beams position on the screen. It falls under Install Depth. Raise or lower depending on the depth of the transducer from the top of the water down. You can actually lower the beam position one click or two on the transducer then under set up raise the Install Depth to see the bait splash on the water. Hope I made myself clear as I am not good at explaining.

I don’t know the reason why, but clicking mine up has made a huge difference seeing the splash and finding my bait. Perhaps like others have said, it’s that the transducer isn’t perfectly level and now we are catching all of the water at the surface? Good video and definitely worth discussion.

@@The_Garmin_Guru you are the Guru, but it seems like every boat rides a little different in the water. My tracker 185 sits pretty low in the rear. Again I’m no expert, but how does one check for a perfectly level transducer once you are in the water?

The Answer to that would be if the pole or trolling motor pole your transducer is mounted to is not completely level while your boat is in the water than yes clicking up or down one click could help.

Enjoy your videos… BUT I think you may have missed on this one though and here’s why: We all know we’re dealing with a fixed beam of 135° x 20° and the beam shape is a ‘prolate ellipsoid’ (roughly the shape of a football). You have correctly said in a prior video, “THE DEEPER YOU GET, THE WIDER THE BEAM GETS”. So… in Forward mode, the 20° beamwidth (widest part) is only in the middle, BUT, the upper & lower portions of the beamwidth are tapered. (think football shape) Thus, the reason ‘clicking up’ helps some to see their jig / splash better is because when tilted upward, you are placing a wider portion of beam up towards the water surface. Of course this only works to an extent, usually one click or so before the software algorithm gets confused causing issues like slanted bottom and depth/range issues.
@The_Garmin_Guru

We will have to agree to disagree on this one but I can see your point
@psouth1720

@@The_Garmin_Guru "The deeper you get, the wider the beam the gets" was your quote from another video and I agree with that 100% . So how could clicking up NOT WIDEN the beam width at the water surface ? The physics say it has to. IMO that is why it's easier for some to see their jig splash at the surface. Many times people falsely perceive a delay in live sonar systems, b/c they don't see their jig at the top the screen right after it hits the water, and then their jig magically appears lower down on their screen. When really their cast just slightly missed the direction of their transducer and therefore b/c the beam is so narrow at the top, their jig just didn't show on the screen until it sank deep enough down to catch the beam.

First off whether or not your trolling motor shaft or pole mount is level is an incorrect reference... they would be "PLUMB", not "LEVEL". They are not the same thing they are 90° apart in orientation or reference to one another. Level is parallel to gravitational forces and plumb is perpendicular to gravities forces. Second...agreeing with Randy's explanation of the small amount of coverage gained by "clicking up" when you also consider the 20° beam angle 5 to 10 feet away from the transducer, at 5 feet is 21.6" inches and at 10' is 43.2" inches it really is a very minimal area we are talking about. Also since talking about seeing lure on the surface within 10 feet of transducer, you're not likely to find many bass that are gonna hang around yet alone eat a bait so close to the boat.
