How does the TVG interact if adjusting the gain? What would be the disadvantage or advantage of turning the TVG off and just using the gain adjustment?

Gain is just sensitivity. Adjusting gain adjusts the sensitivity in the whole water column. Tvg is just equalizing those returns thru a computer algorithm so that they show equal on the screen. It just keeps things more consistent. I would put tvg on low in less than 20 foot of water and then adjust your gain. The gain I have found to be best for me is around 68.
