Joe Smith And you don’t think this’ll trickle down. They’re already talking about how to fit it on a simple aircraft with no retractable gear or auto throttle. It’ll be a retrofit to any aircraft with an autopilot within 10 years is my prediction.

Joe Smith Seriously? I need to know more about aircraft systems. Despite 45 years as a British Airways Pilot with 31,000 flying hours, 15,000 on 747 variants alone and having written one of the technical manuals for the introduction of the 747-400 into airline service, which earned me a FRAeS? And yes. I’m current and experienced on SEP too, being a SFI for a commercial flying school, having retired from airline service. I think I can play top trumps with anyone in aviation for breadth of experience so don’t even try to belittle me. I stand by my prediction. Time will tell.

Helios Airways flight 522 maybe would've had a different outcome if their plane was equipped with this technology , they need to implement this system on all commercial airplanes immediately .
@awuma
@awuma 5 жыл бұрын
It probably was too late for everybody except the flight attendant, so yes, he and the plane would have survived. A special rapid descent mode would need to be available for such high-flying aircraft; the detection of excessively low cabin pressure should be another necessary function, to alert the crew and if necessary to carry out the emergency descent and landing. A detection and alert system would have completely prevented Helios 522.

This could have prevented the Cerritos Aeromexico collision back in August 1986. The small plane pilot had a heart attack (discovered by autopsy) and the other passengers in the small plane could have "pushed a button" to control and land the Piper small aircraft. This happened at the same year I got my pilot's license which also changed some laws for private pilots.
@porscheguy09
@porscheguy09 5 жыл бұрын
This is an awesome system. Hopefully all future aircraft will have something like this. I assume that the Auto Land system contacts the ATC of the airport it’s going to try to land at with some sort of message to let them know what is going on and so they can clear any traffic for the plane to land safely.

This needs to become standardized technology in all planes one day and hopefully soon. For the military it could save pilots from blood clots or hypoxia. And in commercial imagine in a grim scenario like pilots not responding whether it be a terrorist attack or a rogue pilot, someone on the ground could just push an emergency button and the plane would fly itself safely down to the nearest airport.

Welcome to the world of paranoia. How many times would it have been nice to have an autoland system on a small airplane? Ten times in fifty years? Garmin is pushing thousands of airplane owners to buy this useless gadget in order to satisfy their copilot-wives... This is not nice, Mr Garmin. Seriously: This autoland stupidity creates a new breed of accidents. Now every third class Piper jockey feels safer and flies with a false sense of confidence into marginal WX conditions; every weekend, of course. The result is obvious. Didn't your Garmin psychologist tell you that? No, they did not because they are not professional pilots. This is going to be a huge problem in the future. As it is very often in aviation: a good idea, but not fully understood. Good luck, George... oops, I touched the touch screen... oops, the autoland took over my manual landing... oops, the engine shut down automatically, in flight.... oops... Do you want more? This is exactly what happens when young computer geeks and non professionals work together as a team. This system will never get approval from the FAA. For very good reasons. Greets from the 747-8 cockpit. R

If this system is made mandatory for all aircraft, it will put an incredible amount of cost into an already expensive endeavor. Regulating this system into wide distribution will harm the aviation industry and remove the incentives that would lower costs. If this system is a game changer (as it seems to be) and it is left to market forces, there will be an incentive for other avionics companies (new and legacy) to develop their own versions. That in turn will drive down costs and availability to more customers.
@KingOfBanks
@KingOfBanks 5 жыл бұрын
That's an uneducated comment. Not required or possible in most general aviation aircraft. 99.x% of general aviation aircraft would not be able to afford this or be compatible with it. The incredible degree of safety in aviation would (if you go by FAA/NTSB etc info) make this a statistical gimmick for actual use in its designed parameters (incapacitation). You're not mandated to drive a cutting edge Mercedes or Tesla because it has the highest safety rating, I'm guessing? Same principle applys here.

@vagasint.4345
@vagasint.4345 5 жыл бұрын
Gabreiella Wissell I doubt it can handle it like a pilot. Just like a CATIII B autoland on an airliner it probably has a crosswind limitation the airplane will probably choose an airport partially based on crosswind Edit: I am not saying this is bad technology I am just saying it isn’t perfect. No technology is perfect it is obviously better than having no pilot. If this technology could safely get the plane on a highway it would still be awesome because it would still be better than no pilots Can all the techies stop busting my butt and thinking I am saying it is a bad technology. I never once said that in any of my posts across the entire comments section. I am just being realistic and recognizing it MAY have shortcomings. That doesn’t mean I think it is bad that just means I am using critical thinking skills and not just going OMG THIS IS PERFECT THIS MAKES PILOTLESS AIRPLANES POSSIBLE ALL CRASHES WILL COME TO AND END! Before we can use this for pilotless airliners or even single cockpit airliners we need to verify it can be used in all situations and people asking these questions “what about this situation?” “Can it do this?” “Can it this can it that?” Is a GOOD thing. Maybe there is something the people working on this didn’t see or couldn’t predict. So please stop thinking I am condemning the technology it is obviously better than having no pilot on board stop putting words into my mouth. Thank you

VAGAS INT. Not so. We practice auto lands in limiting crosswinds at most checks and it can teach most pilots how to nail a wing down technique, aligning with the runway at 200’ and holding the centreline perfectly. Checking my logbook, on the actual aircraft in visual conditions, I autolanded a 747 with 30kts across. In anger (Cat III) I’ve landed with 20 across. Advection fog can be windy.

This is way cool! But will it ever be worth the cost if installed in the very aircraft with the largest risk to PIC incapacitation events, such as a 172 or similar....or pilots under a third class medical (i.e. pee in a bottle, fill out a form and poof, off you go)? After installing all the required gear + pilot and one pax, you are already overweight. “Families” where an aircraft that this product would be a great idea could likely also afford a co-pilot in the right seat, and/or a trained spouse. Maybe in some small business aircraft this would be super neat. Will that pay the cost of product development plus earn a tidy company/shareholder profit? Maybe so.

I suspect it’ll save weight on most aircraft. Upgrading a PA28 from an original autopilot and vacuum driven gauges to a modern autopilot and ADHRS instruments usually saves a good 40Kg of removed vacuum system and old servos. The servos on a current state of the art autopilot look like cotton reels.

The Autoland system alerts ATC of the emergency. ATC reroutes traffic away from the designated runway at the destination airport and emergency vehicles are summoned to meet the aircraft on the runway. So if you want to get your ass in big trouble, sure, you can press the button every single time.

This is great. Cameras in the cockpit is another thing that is needed. Send the camera data to the tower in real time. For planes that fly by wire, they could eventually make it so the tower could land the plane by taking control. They're doing this with self driving trucks. Someone far away monitors the truck and can take control, while there is a driver in the truck monitoring everything as well. The idea is eventually they won't need anyone in the truck.

PastTime777 hilarious! Do you realize most controllers aren’t pilots? Furthermore flying fpv is extremely challenging too. I would rather see ballistic parachutes added to more general aviation planes. That would be a realistic idea.

Benny Kim yeah maybe I’m over estimating it but it’s very unlikely that planes will be carrying hundreds of passengers pilotless in our life time because this will not be as simple as a automatic car because there can be a lot of unpredictable things when flying a plane so maybe they will come out with an almost fully automated plane with atleast one pilot present at all times instead of two which can help lack of pilots issue
