A category III approach (CAT III with 0 visibility) are rarely executed because most aircraft don't have the equipment, plus once you land with that kind of visibility taxiing can be impossible or incredibly dangerous. and also the pilots have to be authorized to this landing. Not every pilot can land cat3. and also the airport infrastructure must be suitable for cat3.

Good video, however, the PAPI explanation is somewhat misleading. PAPI is to be disregarded if the approach profile, glideslope, localized, DME, RadAlt, BaroAlt are all correct. Some approaches even state that the G/S and PAPI may differ. Besides,, if during a real approach to 100 m, the PAPI will not be visible until below the deck. PAPIs and VASIs alike are ref only unless the PF STATES, "going visual" or during a published visual approach and FDs off. Back in the day, we used to routinely hand fly a CAT II approach for real, with FD and no autothrottle. Our aircraft were approved for this, including single engine. It seems we have regress in this area.

@a_a72875 жыл бұрын
Beau Britton I'm not a pilot but i think in times of severe turbulence, the atc changes which direction planes should land on the runway. There are two ends of the runway and both can be used for takeoff/landing. ATC will issue the pilots towards the runway in which that wind can favor them. As you know, there are some airports which have runways going towards different directions and ATC could direct them to a runway which won't make the plane go through severe turbulence. I'm sure that autoland can correct the plane as moderate turbulence drifts it off course every now and then but the pilot could also take control at final. I'm not completely sure if this is how it always works though.

I pretended I was on an cruising Airbus a380 with dead pilots and asked chatgpt4 for help. We crushed it. Here was the method: I was the supervisor in the cockpit. we brought in a smart civil engineer passenger to sit in one pilot chair. we brought in an avid aviation sim player for the second pilot chair. we brought in another sim enthusiast for back up. We had chatgpt4 to get some ideas from. We tuned into the emergency frequency. Chatgpt 4 told us that, and where various buttons were. We got emergency traffic control on the radio and they found a suitable pilot to talk us through the cruise and auto land. we had 2.5 hours till landing in Sydney. We learned the instruments and created an easy to understand written plan of action for our approach and landing. weather was good and the airport and runway were capable of accepting an auto land. We ran through our plan several times before our approach began. We had a system of triple checks for each step. Obviously we made reassuring announcements to the passengers. We couldn't hide it from passengers because it's unethical, and also because we had to search for smart confident technical minded people to come be stand-in pilots. It all went off without a hitch. I think it's more than possible.

It will never go haywire and it absolutely doesn't matter cause whole plane is controlled by computers anyways with lots of redundancy meaning that there's no fail risk.

Having the plane set up for the autoland mode is an impossible task for an untrained passenger. It would be a mammothal task doing it with someone telling you exactly what to do over the radio.
4 жыл бұрын
The VERY FIRST thing the passenger would need to do was make contact with the ground i.e. know how to use the radio. Failure to do that and the plane crashes - you ain't gonna find an airport and land by yourself. If successful, they then need to be talked through how to program the necessary units (nav computer, localizer radio frequency etc) in order to change direction to the nearest suitable airport then line up and attempt a landing. Trust me, you need that first communication step to be made. Oh yes, the person on the grounds needs to know how to pilot your plane. You might need some spare gas too!! Landing is dooable though.

@@noblestar7742 in fact most pilots prefer to do it manually as much as possible (though at least for airbus, manually is a bit relative) because, not only as you said to keep in touch, but a trained pilot can land considerably smoother than an autolanding. Because of this, autolands are generally used only in poor meteorological conditions, where the visibility is not good enough for a visual approach. However, pilots must autoland at least 3 times per month (also to keep their autoland skills) so sometimes they'll autoland even in perfect visibility just to meet those requirements. Hope it's been informative 😉
