Thanks for the video. I’ll need to look closer at this unit. We’re planning on doing the Northern, CA BAR all the way up to Canada and using just my phone seems unrealistic but budget wise this unit fits.

If you're doing a BDR, this is a great unit. The Tread maps the forest roads as if you're riding on roadways. The Tread also maps may of the unmarked trails making it easy to venture off the beaten path. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for the video. I agree that this unit may perform better for off-roading compared to the XT2. However, as an adventure rider, I would appreciate it if you could provide a comparison between this unit and the Zumo XT2, focusing on features relevant to adventure riders.

I've been running(motorcycle) a Tread Basic for about 6-8 months. It works fine, but what you really need to go with is what all your riding buddies have. I cannot communicate with the XT/XT2 crowd, and NONE of my friends have the Tread. Plus, it is $100 more than the XT. Also, the feature to see your other buddies on screen only works if you have a data signal.
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right on having compatible units with your buddies. For me, having access to the USFS maps is most important given we're riding forest roads and trails 90% of the time. The ability to communicate is a close second.

I like my Tread for the most part, but there is one feature that is probably going to make me sell it for a Trail Tech..... No screen lock, so water on the screen really messes with my map, waypoints, sets random waypoints on its own, etc, etc.

If you have the 66i, you don’t need the tread an vice versa
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 2 ай бұрын
From a pure GPS perspective, I agree with you. I purchased the 66i first, primarily for hunting and hiking. Intentionally bought the "i" for the InReach capability. I run the 66i along with the Tread when ADV riding for two reasons. First, I want the InReach capability out on the forest roads and single track. Many times I'm riding alone so the "i" provides some peace of mind. Secondly, I like the GPS redundancy. When exploring in the mountains, I rely heavily on the GPS. A compass would also work, but I appreciate the gps redundancy. Thanks for reaching out

Nice review, I'm considering replacing my Zumo XT (original version) with a Tread. Can you provide a bit more detail on what is required to enable the group ride functionality? I.E. do the other riders have to be on XT2's or Treads and is the group ride initiated through the phone app? Also, any idea on the range for tracking other riders in the group? I've used this function on a Trailtech - worked fairly well although the range was somewhat limited.
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 6 ай бұрын
Apologies for the delayed response. With the Tread Base unit, you'll need the Group Ride radio kit. With the larger Treads, too big for a motorcycle, the Group Ride function is built in. When you mount the group ride kit, it adds 3/4" of depth from the mount to the face of the Tread GPS - I'm not a fan of how bulky it looks. Also, if you run the Tread in portrait mode, the antenna sticks straight out to the side, perpendicular to the unit. I'm looking for a hinged antenna to run it parallel to the GPS. The other riders will also have to have the group ride function for communication. If you're only doing tracking, you'll be able to see the other riders on your screen even if they don't have group ride radio. We've experienced somewhat better talk-reception compared to our Sena headsets. Tracking riders seems to work up to about 1.5 miles when not in heavily wooded areas. Honestly, I wouldn't invest in the group ride function for offroad motorcycling. The manner is which you initiate the talk-function is clunky compared to just talking a Sena or similar headset. Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.

@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 9 ай бұрын
Help me understand ... are you referencing BaseCamp or the UI on the device. I agree that base camp is very difficult to use, I struggle with it. Sounds like I didn't make it clear in the video, what I like about the Tread unit is that BaseCamp isn't needed in many cases given the breadth of pre-loaded maps.

@@MichauxOutdoors No mate your vid is great. I am referring to the Zumo XT and Base Camp and Garmin Express and Garmin in general. It is like they have no idea what their customers want or need. They have been doing it for long enough you would think they have got it by now. I just wouldn't buy anymore of their stuff based on the experiences I have had with the XT and other Garmin GPS units I have used. Look at all the vids on KZbin and other sites explaining how to use the units - it should not be that complicated. The problem we have now is that they are moving away from dedicated GPS units and going to all this wearable stuff.
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 9 ай бұрын
Got it. Wearables don't work for ADV riding. I definitely want a screen I can reference by glancing down into the dash area. And BTW, I refuse to use basecamp. It's so complicated and the output once you've figured it out is still not intuitive. For my purposes, riding lots of forest roads, the Tread being pre-mapped with the forest roads virtually eliminates my need to use basecamp.

Are you suggesting to use the Tread platform for mapping routes instead of basecamp? I see this post is a month old. Have you had a chance to try mapping with Tread?

Does Garmin update the MVUM maps like GAIA does? How does the Garmin TOPO maps compare to the Garmin 24k TOPO's? I ran a OG Garmin Montana and BaseCamp for many years on my motorcycles. Then I got into 4x4ing and eventually went away from the Montana to using GAIA exclusively. Now getting back into the motorcycling world, I am trying to find a solution that works for me.
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 6 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for reaching out. I don't have experience with the GAIA app. The 24K TOPO provides much better clarity than the typical Garmin TOPO. From my experience, the map clarity on the Tread is excellent for off road riding. And it's certainly much better than the Montana I had which was a 2020 release. Another note, the Tread touchscreen sensitivity is great with gloves on. I move the Tread back and forth between enduro bikes, an 890 Adventure and ATVs. Great in all scenarios. Good luck

Any idea if there's a notable difference between the Treads' maps and those offered by OnX?
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 7 ай бұрын
I use OnX for hunting in the Northeast (US). In my opinion, the maps on both the Tread & OnX are equally detailed with forest roads, hiking trails, and general topography. From my experience, both do a great job of laying down your tracks. However, the Tread is better suited for navigation in the wilderness, like riding a BDR - the Tread shines in this application. Hope this helps

Directly from the Garmin site … Upgrading from a Compatible Tread or zūmo XT to a zūmo XT2 Existing mount and power cables (including Group Ride Radio) from the following GPS Navigators are compatible and can be used when upgrading to a zūmo® XT2 GPS Navigator. Tread® (5.5") Tread® - Base Edition (5.5") zūmo® XT (5.5") While Garmin recommends installing the mount and power cables provided with the zūmo XT2 for peak performance, backwards compatibility was designed to aid in customer experience with pre-installed cables and mounts for the above devices. NOTE: You cannot use an original zūmo XT device with a zūmo XT2 mount due to the differences in configuration.

What do you think for motorcycle off-road the garmin overland not the tread overland just the garmin overland
@MichauxOutdoors
@MichauxOutdoors 7 ай бұрын
I'm not an expert on this topic, but from my research, the Garmin Overlander runs on an older OS while the Tread runs on the newer Tread platform. For me, we ride 90%+ off-road and the Tread series offers mapping of the USFS (forest service) roads which is a game changer. If the USFS roads aren't a priority for you, the Overlander is also a good choice. BTW, I also like the group-ride functionality of the Tread. The ability to talk with other riders is enhanced and your able to track where other riders are located.

It really isn’t very good. It’s still just a Garmin. I got one and honestly, I would much rather run a mix of calimoto, google maps and Gaia. Recently, the Tread kept trying to make me go “off-road” into the forest basically. No visible roads, just outdated routing. It’s also extremely slow to recalculate route. I can’t understand how terrible these devices are with all the space they have to add half decent hardware. The only good thing about these devices is that they’re glove friendly and I like the Point of Interest feature while riding. Helps me identify where gas, food, camp sites are etc.

Are you running those apps on your phone? Also, if I’m not mistaken, that cluster of apps will cost you over $400 annually for lesser map coverage than the Tread. If I’m mistaken, please help me out. Last I looked, Calimoto and Gaia don’t include the USFS roads and trails maps. Appreciate you chiming in. If an equal or better solution exist, I think we’d all like to know about it.
