Excellent video,when I emailed Garmin to say my 660 was dead, they replied that owing to the fact that the Zumo 660 is now discontinued by them that it is no longer repairable . But they are still selling them on their web site for £340!!

One of the most objective and informative reviews I've seen. I had the Zumo 660 until I upgraded to the Zumo 665, which integrates with XM radio. Nevertheless, now that other music options are available through my smart phone, like Spotify and Pandora, and can integrate through my 665 through bluetooth, XM radio is no longer a great advantage. Another feature that the 590 seems to have over the 665, I believe, is the lane guidance, which is VERY useful in busy or congested intersections in town or on the highway. My smart phone does this very well, but my 665 doesn't give you enough advanced warning. As I understand it, I think the 590 is more like the smart phone. After all, on the motorcycle, we don't want to have to make last minute lane changes at busy intersections. It also looks like, according to your video, that the touch and scroll features on the 590 work better than the 665. The 665 isn't nearly sensitive enough and is practically useless when trying to scroll your route on the map screen. Thanks for your review....Good job.

The touch and scrolling features are much better on the 590LM you can also swipe down on menus a bit like a smart phone just not quite as slick. The lane assistance is certainly better too. There were a load of other new features such as the smart phone link which I didn't cover because I've not found the need to use the so much so focused on what I thought were the most prominent differences. Ride safe mate.

I've had both. I recommend the upgrade. Much easier to see bright daylight. You've only got two wheels on a motorcycle. The optional tire monitoring is well worth the money. I would still like the SOB that's in possession of my 660 to give it back!

I wish Garmin would produce a 595LM much like the 665LM with Sat radio and weather. I love the newer interface of the 590 but I can't bring myself to lose the weather feature of the 665. I find it extremely useful. All around great video and review. Thumbs up!

What a super critique of these 2 items. I have an old Zumo 220, which now appears to have kicked the bucket! You mention that the 590 works with your iPhone. Will it work equally with my Samsung S21? If it will, then that's the one for me.

Yes it will. It works great with Samsung. But if you are in the market for an upgrade you need to consider the Zumo XT. It is head and shoulders above the 590LM. The screen is so much better. Pick up a 590LM used if you fancy it. Search ebay for Unit only and then buy the bike cradle separately is the cheapest option. But yes the XT is the best choice. I've been meaning to do a comparison for that but I've been busy with work.

Excellent and balanced comparison. I currently have the 660 and it seems to be getting slower at recalculating etc and wonder if it hasn't the processing power to cope with modern map and firmware upgrades etc.

I just want to add that one reason I did not seriously consider upgrading is that for my 2014 Victory Vision motorcycle they factory kit integrates with the 660 and was it was not clear from Victory if they would support the 590LM - I suspect there are other motorcycles that also may have that issue - perhaps the BMW K1600 - I know that they seem to have a custom version of the 660 (although I have briefly tried my stock 660 in one at a local dealership to see if it powered up and it did without problems) Thanks for the nice review

+Jason WD Prices of the 590LM should be coming down now with the release of the 595LM. In Europe they are now at $536 (amzn.to/1Su1lrw). I would recommend you get the 590LM if you can because it's a big improvement on the 660 which feels pretty dated by comparison. Perhaps consider a used 660 from eBay if you can get a good deal. In my experience the battery is the only thing that can fail and that's quick and easy to replace. Either product will work well but you'll enjoy using the 590 a lot more.

I've had a 660 for about eight years and it's getting, well, a bit long in the tooth so an upgrade to the 590 seems like something I'd like to do. I ride a Can-Am Spyder and with the enclosed body wiring is a bit of an issue. Hi Bill. First things first. Don't buy a 590 or a 590LM new. The new Zumo XT is in a different league and there is almost no price difference between a new 595 and a Zumo XT so you should consider the Zumo XT. If you do want to get a 590 or 595 then buy a used one on Ebay for 1/2 the price of a new one. I still wouldn't recommend doing that though unless you need to save some money. With regards to your original question the mounts for the 660, 590/ 595 and the XT are completely different. There is no way a 590/595 or an XT will fit in a 660 mount. They are just designed differently. With regards to installing the Zumo XT mount is by far the easiest as it only has 2 wires for power. The removed all the audio connections and made it wireless audio only. The 590/595 has a much thicker wiring harness because it has all of the audio inputs and output connections. It's like a cat o nine tails. When considering installation on the spyder this chap installed the Zumo XT on his and it went pretty well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYWmo6GthZqMqJI Because you are only connecting power you can splice to any switched live (like the headlight or an auxiliary circuit if your bike has one) and you don't need to route the cable all the way to the battery. I hope that helps. Once again, forget the 590/595 unless you are buying a used one. The XT is head and shoulders above those models. I'm going to do a comparison soon when I get the time. Work has been busy so I've not had the time or energy as yet. I got a look at the Spyder and it looks awesome. I wish I had the space for one.

I have my 660 nearly 10 years,it,s taken me over most of Europe from Ireland.maybe is my imagination but I think it,s getting a bit slower recalculating at roundabouts with numerous exits plus the screen needs replacing.I have bit the bullet and bought Zumo XT. I have just tried it on few short runs in car.Can,t wait for good weather to try it on the bike and give it a good trial in Spain next September.

Nice video. Does it fit a R1200RT cradle though? Having a heck of a time trying to get a Navigator 6 alternative since I've heard too many horror stories on them being absolute trash for a huge amount of money. Forget trying to get hold of the Nav5 - they are like Unicorn poo, probably because everyone knows about the problem with the Nav6 which Garmin have yet to fix.

Excellent review and some interesting points. My 550 has just about expired, and I'm looking to buy either the 660 or 590. However, I really enjoy the Audio Book playback on the 550, and i believe the 660 does this too via it's media player. So far as I can see, the 590 doesn't have an audio book playback feature directly on the unit. As I don't use an iPhone but have an Android phone, it looks as if I'd lose the audio book playback if I go for a 590. Do you know of any way around this? As you've clearly used both lots, your thoughts and / or advice would be much appreciated. Will the 590 'talk' to Android devices or just Apple devices? Many thanks, Ian

Hi Ian, if you connect your Android phone to the 590LM for voice and music it will appear as option under the audio sources as seen at 6:23. From there you can play audio direct from the phone. The experience is not as fluid as the iPhone but it does work. Windows Phone also works in this manner.

+ElectraWillem I understand. It was a bit of an effort to exchange my 660 for a 590LM because I had to change the wiring harness which involved taking parts of the fairing off. It think it was definitely worth it though. The voice instructions are so much better.

Jeb Crossman TomTom Rider 400 has some similar functions such as the route planner which on TomTom you can use to determine how twisty the roads are and whether you want to climb to high altitude. In all cases that relies on the terrain actually being there to find. The Tomtom also has a nice screen. With regards to using it's down to personal preference. I prefer Garmin as I've used them for the past 7 years and I don't like the TomTom interface. The music support on TomTom isn't as good either. With regards to Bluetooth Headsets, I use a wired connection with my Zumo 590LM because the sound quality of directions and alerts is degraded through Bluetooth and sounds distorted whereas through wired it's crystal clear so I don't have a Bluetooth headset recommendation. Many of my peers on londonbikers.com use Scala headsets and are very happy with them. Best wishes.

Just bought mine this past week. The display brightness (or lack thereof) is terrible. I have it set to motorcycle "transportation mode", and brightness to 100%. I have tried all different view angles. This can't possibly be sun glare issue. If it is, this is the worst possible device for the purpose of navigating that I can imagine. It's feature rich, no doubt. But when the brightness is lacking like this, it doesn't help serve my purpose.

I agree that’s a shame. People keep loosing money. Lifetime map should mean lifetime not lifetime of the device. If map is saved for lifetime on Basecamp why shouldn’t it just be updated there for a lifetime subscriber. This is no no for garmin. They had a 70% sale on maps on New year I didn’t buy extra maps then. When I’ll have garmin XT, it will come with lifetime Europe maps. I hope garmin won’t decide when we are out of the Europe to cancel our lifetime map subscription leaving us with UK lifetime maps only haha

You know your stuff, and im a gps noob. I'm going to get a gps in my home country (USA) but will be using it in a country 100% of the time that does not really offer good maps from garmin. I have to use free, user base built maps in the philippines. I guess my question is am I wasting money buying a garmin if I'm not going to be using there own maps on the device? I'm planning to get the 660 as I have never owned a gps, and I dont want to pay 2x the price for the 590 both have great reviews online.

Hi. Looking on Amazon it says it is only compatible with the Zumo 660 and Zumo 660LM, however, I believe it should also be compatible with a 600 and a 665 and possibly a BMW Motorrad Navigator IV as these are all essentially the same device with the same outer case. It's definitely NOT compatible with a 590, 595, 340 and 350. My friends in the London Motorcycle community who have bought bikes like yours were able to get a Zumo 660 unit only from ebay at a very good price. Unit only sales are pretty undesirable as the unit is useless without the mount and the mount is expensive (half the price of a used Zumo) so you can get your self a really good deal buying that way.

If you think about upgrading, don't. The 590 can't deal with routes, just with tracks. Say goodbye to your well crafted routes, with named waypoints. They are gone in a track. you only have Start and End as waypoint. My 660 was busted, and I freaking hate the limited capabilities of the 590

Yes I ordered one as I got the notification from Garmin last week. It should arrive on Tuesday. I read the manual this weekend in preparation. There are some really interesting new features such as Wi-Fi connectivity and the screen should be a big improvement. I think I'll use it for a month and then post up a comparison.

jobybyrne thank you for comment. I was researching is it worth upgrade my zumo550 to XT. But then my zumo550 with lifetime maps packed up after 12 years of service. I had it in a car cradle on a motorbike in a drizzle. I think some moisture caused a short. After I attached it at computer it worked, later started playing up and died, like a sudden death syndrome. Last year I changed screen digitiser and DIY’ed most of buttons... I have another zumo550 now, but it’s a shame I can’t transfer lifetime maps from my first zumo. I have an old download of my zumo’s operational file in folder on SD card. It has older software file. Every time I attach SD card to garmin Explore it will recognize my old zumo and offer to download maps and latest version of software what SD card physically can’t process. There is no way to skip software update (it’s set to install first by default) so I can’t install maps. Another option would be copy the software file from my new (updated software) zumo550 to SD card with old zumo file, but can’t figure out which one is software file and would this trick work. Is there a way to download my latest map from Basecamp to SD card to use on my new Zumo 550?

No the 590 and 595 are newer models than the 660. The numbering system isn't logical, they were released in this order 550, 660 then 350 and 590.

Yes. It is a navigation setting on the device called auto recalculate which you can switch off. I'm out shopping and my Zumo is in the car so I'll send you the navigation path when I get back to it in a few minutes.

+Bazooka's World For the MP3 player to work you need to be able to connect Bluetooth for both voice and music. Your car mightn't be able to connect for music. It could be the same with your Bluetooth headset on the bike. Can you test your Zumo with a Bluetooth speaker such as a JBL to test it is working correctly? If it connects properly to a Bluetooth speaker then you'll know that it is working properly and the issue may be with your car and Bluetooth headset.

Shame that you don't mention that the 590 will recalculate any route that you designed on your computer into something completely different. Whereas the 660 will leave it as it is. So with the 590/595 you never quite know what route your going to get.

I don't mention it because it's not true. If you reference some of my other videos you can learn how to program the 590LM to successfully navigate a route plotted on your computer. I've ridden thousands of miles and lead group rides using these methods without issues.

Yes by adding a myriad of extra via points. The sort of routes I like to ride would mean exceeding the 50 via points allowed per route. But even then it's possible to miss a road out that you want to ride down and the Zumo can and will route past it according to the settings on the unit.

You can also plot routes without via points, see the video about How to Plot a route from scratch. You should set the activity profile on the unit to match the one you used to plot the route on the computer for best results. The process is never going to be perfect but I've used it effectively many times.

The BMW Navigator V has some of the features but not all it seems. It looks like a half way house between the 660 and the 590LM. It contains most of the useful stuff like the trip planner. That's entirely down to personal preference. At my motorcycle club I've known members that have bought TomTom's and returned them to get a Garmin because they couldn't get on with it and vice versa. It's like the PC versus Mac debate or iPhone vs Android. Everyone has a preference but it's just that. It's not enough to write one of the products off.

In the first instance try and run a software update to see if that replaces the file. Do you know what it was called? Maybe someone with a 660 can send you a copy. If you are getting nowhere contact Garmin. They are very good with warranty issues.

@@JosephByrne Thank you so very much for getting back to me so fast. I tried to run the update software but I get a red banner with a can not update message. The gps appears to do many things except to the most important fact that does not navigate because it has no maps.

No it won't fit, not even close. The two mounts are different shapes and have different connecting pin configurations. Zero compatibility.

around 5 minutes, the 590 says go right at the high glass building, but on map he go's straight on for a wile. so the newer garmin is as slow as the 660 with its 16mhz(!) processor. GARMIN SUCKS AS ALWAYS!!

Yes as described in the video. The 660 could be considered better value, however, it's a very old model now and it shows in terms of performance, features and graphics. I wouldn't consider buying a 660 new. If you want to go 660 look on eBay and pick one up second hand.

Great review! Does/did your Zumo 660 randomly recalculate when riding planned routes ? My 665 does (even with auto recalc set to off or prompt), and it's maddening. Did you ever notice this behaviour on the 590LM? Thanks. Cheers!

I've not experienced it unless I've gone quite far off route and then it recalculates to bring you back on to the route or to the next WayPoint. This video by Parker explains how to set up the Zumo and Basecamp to try and avoid this issue kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZe9p42Or698a9U

Hi, from what I remember when I connected my Windows phone I could advance audio tracks and do simple functions. I didn't try it with an audio book app though. It may be possible but the interface wont be super fluid. The iPhone I use in this video was a refurbished model I bought from eBay specifically to use with the Zumo. I'm a Windows Phone user but didn't want to miss out on the slick podcast functionality.

Thanks so much for that info. My 550 is just about still working (keep having usb issues) , but will be replaced in the near future! The 590 is clearly a better investment than the 660. Thanks again..!
