I used to like a Jpop singer who did not have a high-pitched range either, also she sang live not very well, but she was relatively successful back then, if you take holding concerts at Budokan theater as the measure. The other reason being discussed is the anime films they've tied to were not too successful despite the songs were very good. This sounds more reasonable to me honestly haha.
