I agree that the lyrics in songs aren't as important as the musicality and overall quality. After all, pieces of music that aren't songs can still be deeply impactful and tell a story as Garnt said. I still don't think this properly addresses Connor's original beeps and boops argument though given there is so much that goes into music other than lyrics and notes.

MF DOOM is probably the middle ground example where it didn't have to make sense as long it flow and rhymes well, because most people can't even catch the lyrics even in the 10th plays. Even though it sometimes felt like a bunch of words mashed to rhyme generator, there's a lot of deeper meaning and layers of entendre that can be explored for who is interested in to the lyricism. Oddly enough for me there is several times I misheard a lyrics just to realized it is a part of the entendre.

Not listening to the lyrics is like watching an anime without audio. Maybe some of the fights or animation will convey a meaning or be spectacular enough to be a W but it will not hit the same. Rengoku vs Akaza would look interesting to most people but with the story, voice acting, music the emotional response is just orders of magnitude higher. Sometimes you need to learn to attune yourself to the style but this is the depth you stand to gain.

As someone that cares about the sound, the structure, I couldn't care less about lyrics. It depends on the spin of the lyrics/theme. But to me the complexity/simplicity can be more a thing to me. No matter the genre. The artist's style or complexity or catchy little bits matter to me. I even have a SoundCloud playlist about key parts I love that stick to me and all structure of the sound. I can take lyrics but I don't ever care for lyrics. To me they need a spin for me to listen to the lyrics. Discoholic Movie Love to me was a nice spin on a love song, or vocal chops as a fan of EDM. To me lyrics being memorable is something which chorus/drop ones are but otherwise the odd other parts can to a degree. But the sounds are more then the words no matter how they are presented. The sounds from instruments or sounds and structure. Sometimes they sound weird due to how it's spoken/mixed. You fill in your own gaps. Sometimes it sounds a certain way the lyrics. But I don't care if it's correct. Lyrics videos/karaoke will always mess with things. Yeah fitting it in especially when singing yourself yep. It doesn't always make sense or always fit but how it's mixed/pacing. I am not a musician. I appreciate complexity/simplicity and how it fits the technique I seek usually. I use an app, but no music skill, I understand the techniques by hearing but I don't completely get it. I do my own weird techniques. As far as the app offers. But I cared before I did that. I am no expert still. I don't know music theory but some people don't but still appreciate music. Or some did do it without reading music. I don't always care about meaning but sometimes meaning is fine. To me.sounds matter so much, the meaning can ruin it I care for the sound more/zone out to the sound. The lyrics are like talking how much do I want to focus on that I have more to focus on. Being critical/always understanding everything in media can be too awkward. So just enjoying it in a zone off way is fine. Then again different languages not understanding happens too but still appreciating even if the words could be dark and deep and your like uhhhhhh. But the sound is good. Same as in our own languages. I can enjoy old music, the music videos. I still like the Aardman animations for their ads or the sledgehammer music video. Or the wall or shock the monkey. I still enjoy the sound or others. I don't listen to them or others really. I listen to modern EDM but if I hear other songs from other people's tastes and they are catchy I don't mind. Yeah the meaning like Joey points out for some are like yep that makes sense. Some are catchy but some are very particular of meaning. But so e present them in a particular way. Think heard of some, but never heard their meaning. To me it's like with games I can sometimes tell they had fun, or do this and that and I'm like that complexity or some particular angle to the techniques in a game's design.

Here is the distinction, singing or lyrics is just that Singing. Music is on instruments thusly why they are called "Musical Instruments". When listening to quote Music it should just be instrumental with just the Musical Instruments. When you listen to Singing that too should just be singing of lyrics. Song is the conjunction of the two being combined. That's my view and break down of it. Because I can like the Singing or vocal/lyric aspect but dislike the musical instruments entirely or vice versa. And then you've the songs that accomplish both and those are just unforgettable.
