Somehow the talk about antartica went from being flat-out wrong to kind of accurate. Connor's knowledge is significantly better than I expected. 1. Antarctica is an entire continent (of rock) covered in ice. One of the exciting things about the ice melting is it is revealing lots of ancient fossil deposits (including tropical tree ferns). 2. Polar ice accumulates from snowfall (atmospheric water that has evaporated from land and the ocean). It is fresh water. When water evaporates it leaves the salt behind. You will also find that the lighter isotopes of Hydrogen and Oxygen will also be present in that ice. (Water containing the heavier elements precipitates out before reaching the poles due to being slightly heavier). 3. Yes salt water freezes (around -40°C). Sea ice can be salty. 4. The oldest Antarctic ice we have sampled is around 800,000 years old. No, it does not all melt in cycles. 5. There have been points in time where there has been no landmass at the poles (eg pangea). This leads to a runaway greenhouse effect, as there is nowhere for (reflective) ice to accumulate. Ocean at the poles is a great way to heat up the planet. Megafauna tends to appear when the planet is hot, with land clumped around the equator (promotes hot climate and central deserts). 6. Volcanic springs... not a thing. A spring is anywhere where the water table meets the ground.

SO There's actually a good amount of science behind Refreshment. First, connor is correct in that you shouldn't drink ice-cold water when your hot or when your working out. It doesn't ALWAYS trigger it, but, it can trigger a stomach ache and cramps. The reason is that the cold water hits the nerves in the stomach and esophagus and because your body is already hot, it's like when you put ice on a piece of hot metal, the metal reacts by suddenly contracting and can cause the metal to crack or shatter. We learned this in high school track too, you shouldn't drink super cold water and you should chug it either, both can cause cramping and stomach pain. Sour/Acidic drinks are shown to produce the most saliva in our mouths, that's why lemonade and citrusy things are very refreshing, because our body reacts to it's need for water by drying it's mouth out, so you drink something that produces more saliva. Carbonated drinks are also very refreshing because the CO2 mimics this feature. Bitter drinks can also do this, but not really to the extent that a Sour one does.

People seem to be slightly confused, room temperature water is not anywhere close to being warm, it still feels cold and refreshing, since "room temperature" usually means it's around 15° celsius colder than your body temperature. Even if your room is 30° and you're sweating like hell, the water from that room will STILL feel somewhat cold to the touch and refreshing.
@fancehdonneh15849 ай бұрын
In what world is room temperature 15°C???
@fancehdonneh15849 ай бұрын
Also, the last sentence makes no sense. If your room is 30C then that is NOT considered room temperature plus if you leave water in a 30C room, then that water will be considered very warm. Room temp is around 20C-25C, which can be classified as slightly warm to warm, nowhere near to be considered as cool or cold.
@lightlezs70489 ай бұрын
@@fancehdonneh1584 "15° colder than your body temperature" is what I said. Room temperature is usually implied to be around 20°, the body temperature is around 36° and you know the math after that.
@lightlezs70489 ай бұрын
@@fancehdonneh1584 The sense of what's warm and what's cold is relative, our bodies don't measure actual degrees, just how much is something colder or warmer compared to the body (or body part) temperature. Did you try holding some snow/ice for a while and then immediately washing your hands with your preferred temp setting for the faucet? If you did you would know how much warmer it feels compared to usual, even if the water temp is exactly the same as what you're used to, that's because your hands are cooler than normal, and the temperature sensing nerves feel a greater difference in temperature than usual. In that same way 30° c water just won't feel warm, it won't be particularly refreshing for you, but it objectively speaking is still lower in temperature than your body and will still cool you somewhat (also because it's good at heat transfer, of course)
@fancehdonneh15849 ай бұрын
@@lightlezs7048yes whether one feels cold or warm is rather subjective but there's always one general consensus, that 30C is definitely considered AT LEAST warm. And back to room temperature argument, even tho that yes water lower than your body temp can cool you down, that's not the point to some people. Here's the thing, if I want to feel like I am being cooled down, such as to make my brain (nerves) detect such a thing, then room temp water or anything above that (but still lower than body temp) is a no go. If you want to cool down your body for the sake of "just cooling it down" then sure that'll do the bare minimum for you. So to many people, having cold or iced water is way better because your brain will receive the "feeling" better and you are more likely to feel like you are being cooled down.

The title of this video is misleading if not misinformation. Room Temperature water is not Lukewarm. Especially considering the climates Connor may be more used to, the temperature of room temp is lower than body temperature either way (around 20-25 degrees C). This is further supported that in "cool" tap water in the UK (to my knowledge) the temperatures in the pipes are kept low to minimise the growth of organisms in the water. Lukewarm can be generally considered body temperature water, or 36-40 degrees. I can imagine in warmer climates especially on a warm day the pipes may warm up to that temperature. Another side of the argument is again dependent on the climate, cold water (lets say 15C) in a cold country is not as refreshing compared to cold water in a hot country.
