There's a way to sometimes work your way around those scams (and abusive short-term cancellation fees): 1/ Reschedule the booking for a much later date, even if it means paying a premium 2/ Immediately cancel the new booking This only works if cancelling refund the full ticket, in which case you'll only pay the "low" cancelling fee.
@abrararifify
@abrararifify 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. Also some airlines allow you to "change" into a higher end version of a ticket that is refundable for an additional cost. So you basically call in to effectively to upgrade your ticket and change for a later date (since it will usually be for cheaper), then you can use the airlines online portal to cancel the ticket, or call again to cancel for a full refund.

I've had personal packages come from DHL and not had any issues. The one time I did have an issue was at a retail job I worked a few summers ago. The manager told us not to sign for any packages or we would be written up, and to just ping them if a package arrives. So DHL guy comes in and asks me to sign for a whole bunch of computers. I told him I cannot but I am pinging the manager to come sign for them. He immediately started yelling that I had to sign for the packages now or else. I told him if I signed then I would get written up so I will not be signing for them. Luckily the manager walked up then and started yelling at the DHL guy that the associates can't sign for things especially thousands of dollars in computers. And the manager said if the DHL guy wouldn't stop harassing me he would call DHL and report him. DHL guy shut up and let the manager sign the packages, and never tried to get me or the other associates to sign for things again. I guess he was having a bad day, but it was wild he just went off when I said I was getting the manager...

@0Clewi0
@0Clewi0 2 жыл бұрын
@@LockheedMartinEnjoyer To be fair there are reasons why the domestic flights in the US aren't usually direct, having hubs has economic sense to airlines and with fewer flights they can give a wide variarity of itineraries, though is also the reason why when I had to go to the north east coast of the US I arrived at Miami, had a morning flight to Dallas and had to wait like 6 hours to go east again, like many years ago.

@@LockheedMartinEnjoyer its like the OP said. razor thin margins. Cost cutting is super strong in the airline business, and leads to shitty practices. The reason why you don't get direct, and when you do it ends up being super expensive, is actually really simple. The farther you fly, the more fuel you must carry. Fuel is extremely heavy, costly, and on long flights will be the bulk of the weight of the plane. Basically you get more distance per ounce of fuel, if you carry less. You want to fly twice as long, it would actually cost 8x as much fuel. That is why they lay ppl over, and prefer shorter flights, over long ones.

It's because of overbooking. They intentionally overbook flights because it's likely that x number of people won't show up. By changing your flight you have guarantee that they're overbooked and will have to refund or change someone for free. Thus, they place that expense on the customer willingly changing their ticket. They'll come up with a thousand excuses, but that's the real reason.

Its rumored that Airlines will increase their ticket pricing drastically the closer you get to the date you need to leave because they figure you are either flying for business or are very desperate enough to pay ridiculous prices just to get on the flight on time. While if you book a ticket months in advance they tend to be very cheap because they figure you going for a vacation and probably want to save as much money as possible.

There is a mid point where the sweet spot is. If you book to far in advance they know you need tickets that specific day/week and it is important for you to get there on that date and will charge more. About 90 days seems to be where you find the best deals(at least for long haul) it seems. Airlines know that for most people when you have settled you vacation time with your employer(something many people have to do 6 months in advance) you are locked in to the dates you need to travel.

Tbh I've had great experiences with ANA, they're usually really good. Either Covid was extremely rough on them (don't forget people couldn't go to Japan for 2 years until like a week ago) or this is just a standard thing in the airline industry. I'm pretty sure Garnt could've saved a lot more if he used flex to move his ticket to 6 months away then cancel for a smaller cancellation fee.

I don't want to defend this awful practice but I just want to mention that Japan has had its borders closed for 2 years and it's very expensive to run an airline with running costs for some months even being higher than what they earn (pre Covid). Tbh I wouldn't have been surprised if they filed for bankruptcy . I've only had good experiences with ANA in the past though I've never had to cancel or move my flights. Maybe I'm overly trusting/optimisic because of my past experiences but I can't help but look at it from their perspective, they probably amassed a lot of debt from just trying to stay alive throughout the border closure.

Flights in America are wack because the American airlines took their bailout from the US government and ran. The gov paid them to keep their workforce employed during the pandemic, but wrote no functioning enforcement mechanism into the law for them to follow through on their promise. So they took the billions, and pushed their most experienced workers into early retirement. They fired the lower workers too. So now the problem is they have a reduced, inexperienced workforce who can't keep up with demand. Our transportation secretary isn't doing shit about it either. America is run by the will of corporations.

Inflation in the US in general is doing iron man numbers rn. costs on the whole have gone up etc. It’s cheaper to drive most of the time currently than fly. For example i go to University 18 hours away from my home state, it costs about $1,000 for a flight and it’s never direct due to the location of my uni, where as driving was less than half the price. It honestly wasn’t that much longer of a drive relative to flight travel time when i added in accounted time for layovers etc. It definitely depends on the situation etc, but when I was growing up we never would have considered driving that far as flights were far more affordable.

04:55 One-way Tickets leaves your return flight open for you to choose which airline you want to travel with on your way home, this means that the airline you fly with to your destination isn't guaranteed that you fly with them on your way home, too. So, to make up for some of the potential loss of a return customer, they make the One-way Tickets more expensive than when you buy a Round-trip Ticket because with a Round-trip Ticket they know you will be flying with them both ways, thereby earning them more money from you, and thus making it cheaper because people are generally more likely to give something very expensive for a little less than buying price than they are something already pretty cheap for even cheaper. 09:25 This sounds like Garnt bought the cheapest kind of Economy Seating tickets, if the'd bought the slightly more expensive Economy Seating tickets, a free cancellation and refund would be available, and for way less than $900 or whatever amount that he ended up having to pay to cancel his ticket. Also, even though it's been over 5 years since I last did this, it would also be worth checking prices for both Economy Seating and for the more expensive First Class or Business Seating tickets, because sometimes you'll be able to find those for as much as an Economy Seating Ticket, a little less, or a little more. I think I paid less than $100 more than an Economy Seating ticket cost at the time, only I got First Class tickets instead, and for an 17+ hour flight, that was pure heaven and well worth paying the small extra price to get.

The issue with airlines is that a computer decides everything. The entire airline pricing model depends on what an algorithm in the back decides is the appropriate price on any given day for any given set of circumstances. The human you speak to is literally a mouthpiece for the computer so you don’t run away thinking that skynet is real. This is why airlines think that paying an extra 4k is reasonable, because no human would ever do that even if they were super greedy because it turns customers off. But a computer does it because it doesn’t care about anything other than maximizing profits. The airline industry NEEDS to be regulated to control pricing even though most airlines seem to lose money on economy seats (even as expensive as they are). At the very least, the industry needs to be regulated to be consumer friendly because at the moment the consumer is a literal rag doll to these companies in a way that no other industry is.

Last minute flight tickets are always expensive, because people who are traveling last minute will always HAVE to fly so they may not care how much it is priced. So you're never going to get cheap fares at the last minute. Sure you may get a cheaper flight ticket, but no doubt you're going to be overbooked....
