Realize they re-recorded a song because they had “messed up”....and the engineer was like, “how could you tell?”.
@jmdavison624 ай бұрын
The engineer wasn't paying attention. Apart from the drums, which were often in their own world, the songs on _Philosophy of the World_ had obvious structure, and it would have been easy for an attentive engineer to pick out mistakes. The "messed up" anecdote says more about the engineer than it does about the Shaggs. It makes for a fun story, as do the exaggerated stories (which Garrett swallows with no trace of skepticism) of Austin Wiggin's treatment of the Wiggin sisters. The reality is that the Shaggs' first album is fascinating, distinctive, and well worth repeated listening.

I keep hearing this, it's a The Shaggs conspiracy theory. This album was not a revenge towards their father. They lack musical talent and they play off beat in a rather twisted and continuous way. There is flow, even if it's off beat, much like it were a baby sister to Trout Mask Replica. To actually think that they went out of their way to play bad and include sarcasm and irony towards their father in spite, is nothing short of ridiculous.

It's important to understand that The Shaggs weren't exposed to music because of their repressive father, so they literally invented the music they played without any musical influences at all. Imagine having to invent music! Some of The Shaggs history in this video is just wrong.

Doesn’t matter, because what they “invented” is not good at all. The only interesting thing about this album is the fact that it even got produced, released, and attempted to sell in the first place. It’s fucking dreadful. Nothing musical about it.

@@curly_wyn So I'm going to have to assume that you know enough about music to say that there's "nothing musical about it." That's a pretty bold statement, but okay then. they, in their intended (i.e. written) form, are on Dot Wiggin's first solo outing Ready Get Go. rough around the edges, but fun music. - also, if you tune the guitars to standard - Betty and Dot's guitars sound like they're a hair off-tune in a bad way - these songs actually can be played with open and barre chords. and if you tweak the timings just a bit and not try to consider Helen Wiggin's drumming as a reference, you'll realize that these songs are just Herman's Hermits songs played like a garage rock band starting out. - also, there's evidence, according to the Light in the Attic reissue of the album, that this album was recorded in 1967 - at least the basic tracks (what you hear most of the time). the 1969 date commonly cited on the Internet is the recording date for Rachel's bass parts (one of which got transferred) and some alternate tries at the guitar parts for the album. some of the Shaggs' Own Thing tracks that show them playing competently date to 1969, so how would they sound this shambolic when just a month later, they'd do a nice version of "Wheels"? The answer: Austin wanted to get them "while they were hot" back in 1967, hence the initial recording sessions. He tried to fix the album in 1969 when they made enough money from the Fremont Town Hall shows - he'd been in discussions with local musicians about sweetening up the tracks with orchestral arrangements. The guys pressing the album used the 1969 session dates on the tape box as the day the album was recorded.

I think it's fair to say that this is possibly the most unpolished album ever released, though that very distinction imbues it with a sort of touching honesty that's lacking in most commercial music. Too, it's comparable to little else, and how many albums can you really say that about? Certainly not enjoyable to all tastes, but it's revered by a small but enthusiastic minority for very legitimate reasons, and has even influenced highly regarded artists.

Frank Zappa stated they were "better than the Beatles" and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain ranked Philosophy of the World as his 5th favorite album. Overall, great video. Also, personally I don't think the Shaggs and Philosophy of the World are that bad. They're not great but far from the worst. They're plenty other albums that are far worse. I actually kinda like their music, it's very endearing. The Shaggs are pretty ahead of their time. Since it sounds different and it doesn't conform to any normal standards of what people think or are taught and what is marketed to them, then that makes it bad, right? Hearing any unfamiliar music can sometimes take several times of listening to it before becoming accustomed to it. There's a scene in a British TV documentary about Capetian Beefheart, titled “The Artist Formerly Known As Capetian Beefheart” where Matt Groening (Simpsons creator) is talking about when he first bought the Trout Mask Replica album. He bought it because of the picture on the cover and he had no idea what to expect. He couldn't listen to it after the first few seconds, stopped the record player and thought it was the worst music he'd ever heard. But then, gave it a second and then a third listen. By the fourth or fifth listen, he said that he thought it was the greatest album of all time ever. I guess one might say it's an acquired listen. There has always been outside musicians and composers, who've always broken conventional “rules”. But music can either be classified as art or a commercial marketing product. If it is designed for mass marketing and sales, then it usually falls into a cookie cutter form a music where everything has to fit in to a certain mold. But if music is an art then it can be unique and individual to the expression of the creator. Art is an expression of life, and life isn't always pretty. Adolph Hitler deemed certain works of art, literature and music to be “degenerate” and ordered it to be destroyed. When the Shaggs record was first released, Frank Zappa is to have said that the Shaggs were better than the Beatles. And while they were short lived and only having one album, one of the sisters, Dot Wiggin continued making music forming the Dot Wiggin Band which I believe is still active today. If you like reviewing the worst music records and and bands check out the Frank Zappa produced GTOs album. Or in my opinion, the worst album of all time ever made is “An Evening With Wild Man Fischer” by Wild Man Fischer and was produced by Zappa. Other ones to check out in my opinion would be the Flying Lizards. and don't forger The Residents.

Someone on the internet had to mention that Foot Foot was a cat, which makes things quite a bit clearer. Before that I thought Foot Foot was her imaginary friend (in line with "My Companion") or maybe some neighbour's kid that she was stalking that was trying to avoid her at all costs. Some of their songs do seem to have a bit of a stalking vibe, like that Little Sports Car. And how should I know "My Companion" is a radio? Maybe it was god or a little ghost girl that was murdered by her parents in the same basement where they were forced to play. That said yes I did feel for them and want to give them a hug after hearing these songs.

actually they rerecorded many of these songs in later years. the rerecordings aren't nearly as bad as the original 1969 album. but at this point in time i can't tell the "good" versions from the "bad" ones. there was once a band called "the chocolate-watch band" who recorded and released three albums at the height of the psychedelic era 1967-68. although they appeared in a movie "riot on the sunset strip" in 1967 they were destined to be but a forgotten footnote in r&r history. their last album was so chaotic the producer finished the album with a different singer and an entirely different band on some tracks because he couldn't find the band to finish the album. but he still credited every song to "the chocolate-watch band." in the 70s collectors rediscovered the band's three albums which originally sold very little and their albums became sought after and VERY EXPENSIVE collectors items. the value of these original albums were nearly equal to original elvis and beatles albums. the difference between "the chocolate-watch band" and "the shaggs" is that the former were actually VERY, VERY GOOD! they're one of my favorite bands today. the point i'm making is... there's no telling what the future will bring. recognition, good or bad, can come at any time.

Okay yeah but it isn’t like trout mask replica where it was done on purpose. That being said, they can play these songs exactly as adults today, and that is pretty impressive.

You know, the prediction actually was right. They are popular just specifically popular among a niche category. Their weirdness has brought their music a lot of attention, enough to get a reissue of the album, a follow up album composed of unreleased material, and another follow up of previously unrecorded material with a new lineup under the name the Dot Wiggin Band. That's not nothing.

After hearing My Pal Foot Foot and My Companion, I took a set of hedge clippers, opened them up, duct taped them to my dinner table (with one of the blades pointing up) and was proceeding to plunge my open mouth-hole into the blade; luckily my daughter stopped me just before I committed skull hari-kari. Thanks, Pumpkin... The whole album is a soundtrack to kill to. ☠☠☠ Play it at Guantanamo for full effect.
