What’s funny to me is yesterday I went out and watched a cover band play music from back in the 70s 80s and 90s. They did music from the Eagles,Journey, AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Prince, etc. They didn’t use backing tracks and they didn’t mime or lip sync. They just played instruments and sang the songs. And you know what? It was great! I enjoyed the music thoroughly even though it wasn’t perfect every single second of every single song. it was just plain old music being played and sung, it sounded great and a good time was had by all. Why can’t the original artists realize we aren’t there to hear perfection, we are there to hear them play and sing the songs we love so we can sing along and have a good time? it boggles my mind.

I saw Led Zeppelin in the 70s. Robert Plant's voice was shot from touring, but he made the most of it and so did we. Loved the show! That's real, that's what makes it "live".

For sure ! Zeppelin is a great example of a band that used the studio as an instrument and there is often lots of overdubs and production going on, so when they played things live they couldn't really do that, but it was somehow even better. Their live performances are very powerful, the benchmark for a rock performance IMHO.

Personally, that situation is the one where I don't mind if they use backing tracks for lead vocals... if the artist's voice is shot, maybe towards the end of the tour, and they just can't sing... but the show must go on. But Fil's example even has backing tracks for the background vox, which is like... really?! And then, with ticket prices having gone thru the roof, someone might be lucky to see 1 show per summer, and spend hundreds of dollars just on the ticket, plus parking, fees, food & bev, merch... and after all that, you find out you paid for them to stream some prerecorded songs thru their PA.

As someone who's done audio prod/post-prod, there's absolutely zero chance you could get two waveforms (with pitch or amplitude represented on the y-axis) to match like that in an overlay. @@dawndimanno7129 Even as someone who never had a single singing class, but is musical enough to be able to sing along "pretty well" to known songs (or so I am/have been told by trained singers and friends alike), a bit more than to simply carry a tune, even I know how bad my voice sounds after a concert or a party at which I was "singing along". To be honest, if the concert is by a band/singer I really like and whose many lyrics I know by heart, it's gonna take days until I am able to speak normally again (the worst combination by far is hard rock/metal music and beer).

There's another comment here about them hiring 50 people to monitor for them, which probably costs more than any lost royalties. It's very short-sighted, because the people playing their music now are the ones keeping them alive. Perhaps they haven't noticed that their original audience is dying off and no one under the age of 40 has heard of them. I watch a lot of reaction channels, and millennials and younger have literally no idea about bands and performers whose heyday was before 1995. Who are the Beatles? Who are the Rolling Stones? Who are the Eagles? Who is Barbra Streisand? Etc.

@@southerncomfortuk First this is on a global scale. It's up to the cover artist to report the use and get a license. Do that and all is good. The is family on KZbin who are cover songs right left and centre, they don't report and tale 100% of the money. The rights are broken down into a number of categories each governed by different collection agents. PRS for Music looks after publishing and performance for UK (there's one for most countries) then there is mechanical rights (TV, film and Streaming video (again one fro each country). Give each licence costs a pittance they cannot go searching for this thieves. We do give fair use to education, and review like Rick Beato channel etc. Now we have to fight the AI thieves too.

@ KZbin’s algorithm picks up unlicensed copyrighted material and notifies the artist. The copyright owner has a choice (as many do), to allow the cover version to remain but to receive any monetisation. I’m guessing the company doesn’t need the money from the cover versions artists post. Rick Beats has done a good break down of the issue 👍 . Our tiny channel isn’t monetised, it was primarily a lockdown project to keep in touch with friends and family. In terms of views, it’s unlikely many people see it 🤣.

Firstly Fil, what a top guy you are. I am 72, started playing guitar aged 13, only stopped a couple of years ago due to arthritis, and was a sound engineer all my working life, so I can say I know a bit. The Eagles were one of my favourite bands and I have seen them 3 times, albeit a long time ago. I really would love to think that they were not miming back then, but the sad truth is that you would not really know. The venues are so large, even if you managed to get the very best seats, you are so far divorced from the artists it's impossible to tell 100%. Everyone has their own opinion. Personally, I would not pay good money to go and see McCartney croak his way through a 2 hour set, it's the same thing to me as having to put up with a distorted mobile disco system at a wedding, the perfectionist in me just cannot stand it. It's sad, but if you want to hear tunes from bands who peaked in the late 70's played accurately to the originals, it's tribute bands all the way. What the Eagles are now doing is a disgrace to the industry and would be fraud in any other sector.

Imperfect and aged, but gloriously real and emotive. I would attend such a concert any day compared to a band, any band, that lip-synched or autotuned.

Genes and luck play a role, but dedication to the craft is the biggest controllable factor. Henley probably lacked the dedication to get his voice in performance shape, but still had to get himself and his crew paid (if there are other factors, i plead ignorant). But it's undeniable the lack of dedication goes downstream to the fans he's ripping off.

If you pull apart a studio track where the lead vocal has been doubled, even then, in the studio, they won't overlap that exactly. I've seen an analysis of a doubled Karen Carpenter track (not a for the purpose of criticism, just to look at how the recording was constructed) where it was pointed out that the timing, the pitch and even the vowel sounds were not exactly the same. If Karen Carpenter can't do it in a studio, no one can do it, and especially not live.

@@vestibulate I’m not defending Henley or lip syncing at concerts, but so many are doing it (who are decades younger even) and selling tickets as though they were performing live, it’s not really fair to single out any one artist. No one is preventing any of them from perpetuating this fraud. Some class action lawsuits on artists such as The Eagles, Taylor Swift, Janet Jackson, Madonna and others, plus Live Nation when it’s the promoter, would likely change this lip syncing fraud for the better. At the very least, anyone using prerecorded vocals should be required by law to say on the concert announcements and ticket buying sites, plus the actual tickets “some vocals will have been prerecorded” or “some previously recorded tracks will be used” so people will be informed and have a choice. Suing them all for billions is probably the only way to end the deception.

I wasn’t trying to silence YOU or anyone else. Just getting Vince Gill and Deacon Frey to sing was one way to extend the longevity of the band. Henley has been trying to figure out how to get The Eagles to run on empty for at least as long as Glenn Frey has been gone! I can’t understand why anyone would pay big money to see them live to hear Deacon Frey try to be his dad. They lost too much when Glenn died. The problem is industry wide. I want to see them all, including the promoters, venues, ticket sellers, sound people and everyone else who enables and profits from this fraud to be called out publicly, and not just here on KZbin, and make them pay. The question is, who is going to sue them and how? It probably has to be a class action lawsuit (at least in the US) because nobody who buys concert tickets has the money to pay attorneys for something this huge. Perhaps we could all write to our state and local consumer affairs offices and complain about ALL the artists, including The Eagles and Henley, who are defrauding the public. Maybe the local governments can do something. All ticket vendors (including the resellers) have to put total ticket prices online now including fees, for all New York shows, so they can’t surprise people with huge fees after they’ve started the buying process anymore. A small victory against the Ticketmaster/Live Nation monopoly, but it’s something. I think by your spelling you probably live in the UK, so consider complaining to whoever your consumer authorities are, about whichever artists you want. Contact BBC and Sky News. The more the merrier. Email them proof. The mainstream press and music press getting ahold of this story will help give it more of the publicity it needs. Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair or NME, you name it, could all get on board, if they dare to care! I noticed while watching Glastonbury that people weren’t lip syncing, and I wondered if the people who put on the festival insist on all live performances. If so, good for them! The Eagles are on their way out. At least they did give live performances for years. Some of these younger artists have likely never done a single concert without lip syncing. They should all pay regardless of age but perhaps it’s younger artists who should take the lead by saying “I promise I won’t lip sync live or use auto tune, like so many others are doing” without getting sued by anyone themselves, to help spread the word that live singing matters, if they have the guts to do it. Pink did it! It’s the future that matters more than what the old dinosaurs are doing. People will say they’re old, who cares? (I don’t feel this way myself but I do care about the present and future of music even though I am not young anymore myself. I want younger people to know and experience what real music is. I had that real experience for my youth.) Younger artists like Taylor Swift can’t be thought of as being too old to sing live. This whole ridiculous physical performance emphasis on singers is a lot of what’s to blame on why all the younger folks are dancing and lip syncing their way through live shows instead of really singing. Bringing back live singing on TV shows too, so the standards are changed from physical displays to actual talent displays, would be a good start too. Since we don’t pay big money for TV, it can’t be enforced or sued into submission, but they could take a stand, if the public demanded it. Hope I have made my position clearer! Sorry this was so long.

I would also be dubious about the backing vocals through most of the songs... but appreciate that would be harder to prove.....also as much as I love Joe Walsh, it sounded like he was only singing half of 'in the city'. As for the vocals on 'I can't tell you why' 🧐🧐🧐......Could you review a Paul McCartney concert, I wasnt a huge fan beforehand, but after seeing him live (in the same venue as the Eagles) was blown away and in no doubt that everything was live......vocals weren't perfect but they didn't need to be and in all honesty added to the experience to see an 82 your old man not sounding like his younger self but still sounding incredible, adapted the vocals accordingly and the concert was all the better for it.....Would love to hear your thoughts.

Perfect lip synching is tricky (especially that Mariah Carey one the other week, where she had all these different "live" versions - how would you remember which one you were meant to be miming to?) but also it's easier for a band to lock in together than to lock in to a backing track (if they've played together a lot).

I saw the Eagles at Earl's Court, 2001. £28 for ticket & travel...amazing show and sound. Henley has an amazing and recognizable vocal but he's been singing for 50+ years so its bound to change. The people who've bought tickets to any of the Eagles shows you've analyzed, showed file a class action lawsuit for FRAUD against the Eagles, their promoters, and whatever other companies or person were involved in the promotion and production of those FAKE shows. The people have been CHEATED out of their money, assuming they care about such things. The music industry, and all involved in such things, needs to be called out and held accountable for it. What a bunch of POSERS! The Eagles used to be a band that I would admire for their music, but not as they are now. I will NEVER spend any money on then or EVER make a new purchase from them of ANY type. There have to be attorneys who feel as upset about this as you and I and lots of others in Fil's comment section. Maybe there haven't been lawsuits because of the underhanded weasel-words they use to sell tickets. The Eagles "Experience" doesn't exactly claim that there would be 100% live music created on stage that night. Maybe there are even better reasons others could come up with to explain why no lawsuits have yet been brought.

I think it is more that people have been unaware (and are just now becoming aware) of what is happening at a 'concert', and having the proof for a successful lawsuit. Don't forget, there are DECADES of established concert/performances by countless bands of what musicians actually playing 'live' really is, regardless of 'the experience'./ This whole 'relabeling' is a relatively new and more recent thing. Even in "The Eagles"'s past, they have had decades of actually playing and singing live, as far as we know, and we can reasonably assume that it is true, being much before it was really technologically available or thought of to do what they are doing now. I think that just hasn't been a really well constructed legal case being brought against any band doing this, because most people aren't aware enough yet to realize they are being ripped off and defrauded. Look at the public consciousness on the overall idea based on any mainstream stories about such things. My take is that, at most. when the general public thinks of this.... they might recall a story about 'Motley Drue' or whatever performer did the superbowl half time show and may have gotten called out during some segment on 'Entertainment Tonight' or TMZ, or some such show. Most people are willing to accept just 1 original member of a legacy band as being that legacy band at a concert while touring, even though a majority of the actual original members are absent just because they decided not to be a part of it with that person any more. It is only recently that in such a case, those tours have become promoted as 'Come see so and so originally of the band ________" or whatever, so do you really think people understand that they are really being ripped off cause they are really paying for undisclosed miming during a concert promotion and ticket sale? Name me one group or artist in which it is completely understood by their ticket purchasing fan base that when they buy a ticket to see this group or artist at a show, that artist or group will be miming to the songs they will be hearing at that event? @@time3947 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think you might be on to one of the reasons why the lawsuits haven't been filed (not enough paying customers know they've been made fools of). I am so disappointed in this and now am wondering about the concerts I've been to recently. I know for sure that some of them are being presented live because the vintage rockers sometimes mix up a verse here or there. (I should do so well when I get to that age in 15 years!) I was close enough to the stage to see that they were really playing and singing, and it matched what I was hearing. But.... The deception Fil is uncovering is making me wonder about everybody. Were those concerts really them playing live or was I hearing some recorded version of their music? I never went to concerts for "the show" of lasers and pyrotechnics. In fact, I don't think I ever saw one like that (Did Van Halen (David Lee Roth version) do that kind of stuff? I don't really remember. They sounded pretty damn good for most of the concert and DLR was a gymnastic wonder. There were a couple of songs that EVH wasn't completely "present" for.) I went to hear the band play their music and prove that they were the ones who laid down the tracks that ended up on the record. Were they playing what Fil generously terms "backing tracks" even back in the 80s? It wouldn't be hard for a band to play the recorded stuff through the speakers. I know there would be a risk involved, but as we now see, the money is soooooo tempting. I hope that the rockers I continue to pay to hear and see live will address this at their shows and tell or show with clarity exactly what (if any) parts are sampled tracks that they are using to fill out the music. I saw John Lodge (Moody Blues) and he performs the entire "Days of Future Passed" album (Nights in White Satin is from that record) using the symphonic music from the album, which is obvious in the way he presents it. He begins the second half of his show with no one on stage while the music from the record starts. Nobody would have needed that clarity to know there wasn't a live symphony present (like the Moody Blues did for a few years), but the way he did that makes me feel like I am getting the live version of his act and not pre-recorded stuff during the other parts of the show. We could get into a whole discussion of what amount or type of "enhancements" are acceptable to me (like the "echo" effect) if you want, but I have next to no knowledge of what kinds of effects are available. I don't object to using voice enhancements (or guitar settings that make it purr on one sing and growl on the next), but making a very poor singer like me sound like Maria Callas to a listening audience goes way too far past "enhancing" the voice into "you are making a fool of everybody who paid good money to see and hear you" territory. I don't expect the ones who are miming their whole shows to come clean. If they did, they likely would be subject to having to refund anyone who asked for one. I wonder why this matters so much to some of us while others don't care that the music wasn't live? I can't answer that, but I know it matters to me, A LOT. Thanks for the conversation. @@meloniedropik3539 Hey man, I appreciate real and valid discussions.... If I haven't mentioned it already... I am an original gen x geek/nerd and a musician. I have been playing guitar since I was 17 and am fortunate to know many talented musicians, live sound engineers, and some studio owners in my area. While I am not completely knowledgeable about all the studio and recording processes, I do have some overall understanding of things, and the general physics of things.... my ear is good enough that my live sound engineers friend will often ask me for my opinion on a sound at a show they are running when I am there. That being said, for the most part, I don't think you have to worry about the 'realism' of a show you went to that was PRE-digital sound. Not that it wasn't possible, but it would have been much harder to have a mimed concert, especially when you consider the audio quality that would have to be handled to have a decent enough track for someone to mime to... as well as, the best control of that track. Like I said, not that it wasn't possible, but much herder to do and get away with. Now this is where playing an instrument helps, especially guitar. In this case, you have an even greater understanding of how and when the guitar produces sounds and notes, and under what conditions those things happen. So, when guitar playing ins playing something on stage that should only sound a single note, but you are hearing a full guitar chord, then something is not right. Just like the recent things with John 5 and Motley Crue. Now, what John 5 was sating in response was correct, BUT people missed the elephant in the room and were even calling him out for the right thing. It was actually Mike G at the Art Of Guitar YT channel that picked up on this..... While MC and John 5 say they don't play to backing tracks, they are clearly lying... and here it was Mike G pointed out, which was a different part of that concert than most people were pointing too.... So, MC is a 4 person band.... singer, bass, drums, guitar. There was a song in which John 5 was playing a lead solo (single notes), yet there was also a rhythm guitar part going on as well......if there are NO backing tracks, as they contend, then WHO was playing the rhythm guitar while John 5 was playing a lead solo? Now, my biggest problem with their stance on this is that they have said there are NO backing tracks..... if they would have simply come out and said we have additional parts on backing track, but what you see us doing, you hear live over them, that would have been fine.... that wasn't their stance... they have said they DO NOT use backing tracks at all. My stance on backing track is this.... whatever performers there are on stage, should be actually perform their parts regardless of whatever other musical parts are on backing tracks. I understand that if a band has a song with an orchestral section, they aren't going to pay for a 30 piece orchestra to tour with them to play on the one song. That is fine.... bu they better be performing the song, in whatever arrangement they see fit, for the performances in the tour. Sometimes, that was part of the surprise... to see how an artist would play a song live, as opposed to how they recorded it. This is why Joe Satriani became my favorite guitar player. I grew up on the classics, but when I first discovered Satch on Mtv , I was blown away by how he was taking musical guitar ideas, and playing them in a new way. When I go 'Surfing With The Alien, I was completely enthralled by it. As I was learning about what I was hearing, and that he would have several different guitar parts in a single song, I wanted to see how he would do it live. When I first saw him play live, I was hooked. I love how, as a 3 piece band, he was recreating the songs in a way that you got the song, without necessarily getting every single note of every single guitar part. To me, that was impressive. I got to me him back in '08 as part of a backstage experience. It was very enlightening. Now, when we talk about auto-tune/pitch-correction.... this is NOT the same as adding reverb of distortion to a guitar. Auto-tune/pitch-correction creates a new PERFORMANCE that did not exist prior to its use on the particular audio it is being applied to. Reverb, distortion... and most guitar effects only change the QUALITY of the guitar audio, but they do not reproduce/replace the actual recorded performance. EVH rarely played things exactly as he did on the album, or even the same way twice. Now, guitarists have use pitch altering effects (harmonizers/ Digitech Whammy pedal, etc...)... these still have to react to the actual performance the guitar is doing.... and may only being used to ADD and additional guitar harmony to audio of the guitarists original performance for enhancement or effect.... they have been used to replace the pitched notes of the guitar audio live, but that cannot reproduce the nuance of specific techniques of the guitarist's playing of the guitar....in these cases, is it often used for effect.... as well as, to increase the pitch range of the notes that can be produce on a guitar or other instrument. In the case of a voice, if is replacing what the singer is doing, and is often used to modify and actual vocal performance because the singer did not have the talent/skill to sing the music in the first place. Hence they call it.... AUTO-TUNE or PITCH-CORRECTION (if being used manually in a studio). In these cases, the is being used to make us for the abilities we would expect a singer to have.. meaning, lesser talented people can be made to sound as if they are something that are not.... competent talented musicians/singers..... that automatically makes them POSERS. The whole point of what FIl is point out is that there is no disclosure of what you are paying for when you buy a ticket to see a 'live performance'm and as I have pointed out, there are decades of precedent that have set in the public mindset what a live performance is. For these artists/promoters/musicians to sell/advertise/promote tickets to concerts, and they do not follow what their 'customer' have as an establishes mindset of what they are there to experience live, is deceptive and fraudlent. Cut and paste baby, cut and paste! I will say their 70s records would have been done proper. You could easily punch in a fix, but cutting and pasting was too much of a chore. A good sing could just nail it. I would bet, recent albums by many are full of cut and paste. I dabble in music but prefer to play it all the way through, and maybe do a few touch ups.

Dutch band The Nits did it well on one of their tours. They had a huge (mock-up) reel-to-reel tape-deck standing on stage all through their performance. On a couple of their songs, when all 4 musicians sat together and did close harmony, they obviously weren't playing their instruments and instead the reel-to-reel tape-deck was "playing" to make it clear to the audiences that yes, for this song they used a playback track for the instruments.

I absolutely loved the Eagles literally half a century ago. They can probably still play, but I'd be really surprised if they could still sing. Only a very few singers (Ann, Juice) can last that long, but they definitely lose a lot of range and articulation. Look at Stevie Nicks performance on Saturday Night Live. It was problematic, but it was still great. Even though she really only ever sings one or two notes, you could see she was singing for real, and that is appreciated.

Great stuff Fil. Might be interesting to see you demonstrate the comparison of 2 simultaneous recordings you make; one where the recording is clean and the other where the recorder is near something that creates the ambient noise that you have to account for. That way we can see a single performance, recorded by 2 devices, and show how the minor variations occur.
