hopefully the s&box supports custom playermodels ranging from realistic humans into anime girls. the peengus model works well as a default but not all people wants to play as a sausage man.

They say they will, but the problem is the vast, vast majority of content made is going to be for the default playermodel and not allowing copyrighted content only makes that problem worse. It wouldn't be so bad, but the default playermodel is truly fucking hideous and it only gets worse when it moves and animates and while I might be able to use a better playermodel, MY playermodel isn't the one I have to look at for the most part. While Garry and his fanbase say "it's not Gmod 2" to deflect criticism, it's telling that their site constantly states it's "THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD! THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD! HEY DID YOU KNOW THIS IS THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD?! THIS IS THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD!". Overall it just feels like the Back 4 Blood to Garry's Mod's Left 4 Dead, complete with the original being based primarily on ideas and assets by Valve down to the Physgun being a prototype for the gravity gun while the devs keep saying "HEY REMEMBER THAT MUCH BETTER GAME WE MADE? THIS IS THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO THAT!", which is a BIG red flag. People made content for Garry's Mod because the core of it was fun, and when I look at S&Box all I see is another shit Gmod ripoff, one with a hideous artstyle worse than fucking Cruelty Squad (and in this case it's unintentional) and more bugs than a Brazilian rainforest. One which Garry says might be released this year despite it's constant bugs, something I might accept from an indie studio with limited resources but most certainly won't from the likes of someone who just tosses out his old computer and buys an entire new one whenever he needs an upgrade. I said it before and I'll say it again, if it's a good motivation to make my own playermodel it's a good motivation to just fucking skip entirely. I have to make the models, I have to do the fucking code, I have to do the animation and sound effects. I might as well just use an ACTUAL fucking game engine that isn't so buggy.

@@MacaqueStinx Glad to feel validated. Also, you know what. I want to go into more detail as to WHY the default playermodels are so bad. They're too realistic, yes really. Look at S&Box's default player model, it has realistic skin tones, if you age it the wrinkles are too realistic looking and if you put hair on it's too realistic. It does not match the fundamentally cartoony looking core. Let's have a look at some seemingly similar creatures to the default playermodel of S&Box... The Minions, yes, THOSE minions. static.wikia.nocookie.net/despicableme/images/9/93/Mel_and_the_Minions_.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20230717191751 These are pretty close to the default playermodel of S&Box, yet they're still fittingly cartoony. Their eyes are bigger, their skin tone is bright yellow rather than normal human skin tones and they don't have realistic wrinkles because it wouldn't look right, so while I've never seen an old minion, I can only assume it would be indicated with grey hair (if even that) and stereotypical "old people" clothing.

​@@DarthMcDoomington That's the thing, that's probably gonna be the Source 2 SDK most people are gonna get, it's gonna be more like a game engine, because they are also trying to make a competitor for Unity (similar UI's and design paradigm), and well, Source 2 is at the moment one of the most advanced and considerably optimized game engine up to date, so there is a considerable market for it, from Roblox Creators wanting to escape that other platform to Unity developers escaping the engine and people wanting to mess around with the technology, I know there's Alyx workshop, but that requires VR. Not defending the game, I honestly think very similarly I would love if this was more of a GMOD source 2 port or at least had the Sandbox game mode and allowed all kinds of assets. But I guess they are a big boy company now and they can make enough noise to call Nintendo's wrath (gmod situation)

When I think about Garry's Mod, first thing that comes to my mind is John Freeman who was Gordon Freemans brother was one day in an office typing on a computer. He got an email from his brother that said that aliens and monsters were attacking his place and aksed him for help so he went. John Freeman got his computer shut down and wet on the platform to go up to the roof of the building where he left his motorcycle and normal people close because he was in his office lab coat. John Freeman got on his motorcycl and said "its time for me to live up to my family name and face full life consequences" so he had to go. John Freeman ramped off the building and did a backflip and landed. He kept driving down the road and made sure there was no zombies around because he ddint have weapon. The contrysides were nice and the plants were singing and the birds and the sun was almost down from the top of the sky. the mood was set for John Freemans quest to help his brother where he was. John Freeman looked around the countrysides and said "its a good day to do what has to be done by me and help my brother to defeat the enemys". John Freeman was late so he had to drive really fast. A cop car was hiden near by so when John Freeman went by the cops came and wanted to give him a ticket. Here John Freeman saw the first monster because the cop was posessed and had headcrabs. "I cant give you my lisense officer" John Freeman said "Why not?" said the headcrab oficer back to John Freeman. "Because you are headcrab zombie" so John Freeman shot the oficer in the head and drove off thinking "my brother is in trouble there" and went faster. John Freeman had to go faster like the speed of sound and got there fast because Gordon needed him where he was. John Freeman looked at road signs and saw "Ravenholm" with someons writing under it saying "u shudnt come here" so John Freeman almost turned around but heard screaming like Gordon so he went faster again. John Freeman drove in and did another flip n jumped off his motorbike and the motor bike took out some headcrab zombies infront of John Freeman. John Freeman smiled and walked fast. John Freeman then looked on the ground and found wepon so he pickd it up and fired fast at zombie goasts in front of a house. John Freeman said "Zombie goasts leave this place" and the zombie goasts said "but this is our house" and John Freeman felt sorry for them becaus they couldnt live there anymore because they were zombie goasts so he blew up the house and killed the zombie goasts so they were at piece. Then John Freeman herd another scream from his brother so he kept walking really faster to get where he was. Ravenholdm was nothing like the countrysides there was no birds singing and the pants were dead and teh dirt was messy and bloody from headcrabs. When John Freeman got to where the screaming was started from he found his brother Gorden Freeman fightin the final bosss and Gordon said "John Freeman! Over here!" so John Freeman went there to where Gordon Freeman was fighting. John Freeman fired his bullet from teh gun really fast and the bullets went and shot the final boss in the eyes and the final boss couldnt see. Gordon Freeman said "its time to end this ones and for all!" and punched the final boss in the face and the final boss fell. John Freeman said "thanks i could help, bro" and Gordon Freeman said "you should come here earlier next time" and they laughed. The laughed overed quickly though because John Freeman yelled "LOOK OUT BRO!" and pointed up to the top of the sky. Gordon Freeman looked up and said "NOO! John Freeman run out of here fast as you can!" and John Freeman walked real fast out. John Freeman loked back and saw Gordon get steppd on by the next boss and he was mad and angry. personally i dont see this blowing up any time soon, the hype of a potential gmod 2 took a nosedive when people saw what the character model looked like, also, why play gmod 2 when gmod is already an amazing game with an established community and workshop? ontop of that, kids that play roblox are going to continue to play roblox since they aren't really interested because their favourite games are on roblox. the only reason i can see for anyone playing this is to explore the limits of the source 2 engine. however, once that novelty wears off the playerbase will dwindle and settle into a minute community in the best case scenario... the way i see it? if people want a gmod 2 then give them a full fledged gmod 2 with valve assests and workshop support (and for the love of all things holy, ditch the sausage boy) but keep the roblox style game creation as a separate tab in the main menu sort-of like the in-built workshop tab in gmod's main menu. this would create a much better blend for the targeted market for the game rather than grabbing at different groups and cramming them all together. i understand that it's still work-in-progress but i find it to be incredibly important, hell paramount, for a game to know its identity and who it's designed for way before getting into stuff like beta testing and even more so with talks of a public release. it needs to be unique but feel like home and encourage the differing demographics to explore the features that maybe they hadn't planned to upon purchase, it doesn't need to be perfect on release as that can be fine-tuned with updates. that's all it should need from my perspective and i hope they do something about it because it would be disheartening to see this fall into obscurity

We pretty much found the limits of what the source engine is capable of, so it's not like Garry's Mod has a whole lot more growth potential. But finding that potential wasn't a thing that just happened over night. There's only so much you can tack on to an over 20 year old game engine before it starts getting bloated and unstable. S&Box isn't meant to be a game at all, it's meant to be a platform to open the Source 2 engine up to a wider group of people outside of just the people who work for Valve. They aren't forcing people to make games that all use the same default sausage people avatar, that's just the default that they've created. But thinking of this as "Garry's Mod 2" and all of the preconceived notions that come with it is a mistake. Sadly, there will never be another Garry's Mod with how strict and out of control copyright laws have become, and the general anti-modding campaign that game companies and games journalists are on. They even tried to remake TF2 in s&box and Valve shut it down.

@@3DFella Yea gmod basically pays very with each copy bought. Garry decided he didn't want that for sandbox so all use of their assets or code is off limits. Basically it's made sandbox into little more than a platform for random stuff. A lot of the stuff that was fun in gmod is gone entirely.

I think I'll be sticking to Garry's Mod unless a few conditions are met. Those being: It's easy to import custom player models. The pingus men just don't do it for me. Local mod support, as this is clearly being made as a platform for games, this is going to mean not only will that platform be more heavily controlled, but we are going to see an influx of microtransactions in this game, so I want to be able to easily locally import mods as well, so modders have more creative freedom, especially when it comes to assets from certain companies. And most importantly: Dedicated servers just like Garry's Mod has. If there's no dedicated servers I'm not touching this.

7:08 you aren't blinded by nostalgia, gmod wouldn't have gotten as popular if it hadent had used other source game assets. Gmod shorts featuring tf2, l4d, hl2 etc was hilarious and was recognizable. It was massive free advertisement and made other source game communities wanna play gmod. I doubt s&box will be as popular for that reason alone. Being able to easily import other games maps and characters working right out the box and mounted was awesome. I'd say they should just bite the bullet and use half life alyxs models as the base assets. Or atleast use Rust's assets and not the god awful looking Terry model

You said the sandbox mode wasn’t available. Depending on how that is I think it’ll make or break the Gmod or Roblox feel. If S&dbox Sandbox pulls source 2 assets from other games like Alyx and CS2 and we get steam workshop levels of support then it’ll start to become much of the same. There’s a lot of gmod servers out there that are basically their own source games, they might just be leaning in on that. If we could still get a prop hunt game going then I think it won’t be gone.

People made content for Garry's Mod because the core of it was fun and the look of it was timeless, and when I look at S&Box all I see is another shit Gmod ripoff, one with a hideous artstyle worse than fucking Cruelty Squad (and in this case it's unintentional) and more bugs than a Brazilian rainforest. One which Garry says might be released this year despite it's constant bugs, something I might accept from an indie studio with limited resources or an studio that has a time limit set by a publisher but most certainly won't from the likes of someone who says he just tosses out his old computer and buys an entire new one whenever he needs an upgrade for one part.

I'm hopeful that there will be a mod that replaces the player models so we won't see the sausage as there are replacers for gmod, and I'm hoping that the sandbox mode will allow for many custom game modes to function similarly to how it does in gmod.

Yeah I definitely agree they should not have said it is a spiritual successor to Gmod but at the same time this game does seem pretty cool even if the character models are pretty ugly I mean whenever I can get access to the game I will certainly play it and maybe create a level or two who knows what I do know is this game could be a good platform for new game developers to learn level design

6:20 Imma go in a little more detail here on why S&Box won't have HLA assets. So basically, Facepunch asked Valve if they could use HLA assets. Valve said "sure bro you just gotta give us 10% extra from every sold copy of your game." With the existing 30% that Steam puts in place, 40% would be like... a lot of money, and because of that and the fact that Facepunch didn't really want S&Box to basically be "sandbox hla," they rejected the offer

As soon as TF2 Source 2 was DMCA'd and it became clear that we couldn't use valve assets, IP or mechanics I lost a lot of interest with S and box. Part of Garry's mod's charm was the way that it used source engine content. How many gmod animations did you watch built on 2fort or dust 2 or whatever when they were at there peak? How many memory's do you have of spawning in 50 combine enemy's and starting a war against random memes from the 2010s? How many times have we seen gman's face twisted into shapes and forms that's barely even recognisable? Without these what's the point of even playing garry's mod? If all I wanted were updated tools why would I buy this game over just downloading a game engine like Unreal or Godot? It would be free for me to begin developing and there's already a tone of material to work with from tutorials to free assets that I could download and start using to make whatever game came into my head.

About the "Why not use Valve's Assets?" section. Garry actually answered this already and simply put he didn't want to repeat the same problem that Garry's Mod has with almost requiring Counter Strike: Source. This is why game mounting will never be a feature in s&box.

I think it would be a good thing for people to have a platform to use Source 2 to make cool maps for other people to explore, or an RP map, and being able to use fresh new assets instead of the same old assets from CSS and HL2 that we've been using for damn near 20 years. And it seems like we are finally reaching the limit of what the Source engine and Garry's mod is capable of. Right now, to me the most interesting thing Garry's mod currently has going for it is the mapping community, and it would be nice to see what they would be able to do with Source 2, especially with the spooky atmospheric exploration maps.
