I first encountered this tune in 1971 on Gabor Szabo's "High Contrast" LP BTS 28 (Yep, still got it!) the composer Bobby Womack plays Rhythm Guitar on it. I feel the enduring appeal of this lovely tune is that it's basically a very simple couple of riffs that leave infinite scope for improvisation and the Uber Talents of Stephan, Lagrene and Kamp certainly do it justice! Many Thanks for posting - Jay in the U.K.

co-composer Bobby Womack ;) (what is seen on the record sleeve is not the whole truth)

@@tiborfarkas2969 O.K. Tibor what is the whole truth? - I'm intrigued.
@tiborfarkas29692 жыл бұрын
@@jaycooper2624 as far as I know, they (BW and GSz) worked together on LP 'High Contrast', they wrote the songs together, and finally they draw straws(!) to decide whose name to assign to particular songs as 'composer'. And actually in 'Breezin', Szabó's part was at least as large as Womack's. Do you have any information (to the contrary)?
@jaycooper26242 жыл бұрын
@@tiborfarkas2969 That's an interesting anecdote Tibor but I have to say that I'm dubious about it's authenticity. The "High Contrast " LP contains another 3 tracks credited to Bobby Womack all of which can be found on Womack's own releases and 3 Szabo compositions one of which (Fingers) is credited to Szabo and Bass player Wolfgang Melz. The main reason for doubting the "drawing of straws" idea is that it is completely unnecessary, any number of people can be credited as composers of a track and usually are, regardless of what their contribution might be. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the track was "worked up" in the studio during the session, but if Gabor had played a major part in it's composition I feel sure that he would have insisted on a co-credit because there's money involved! This particular track must have generated huge sums in royalties over the years and whilst Gabor died in February 1982, Benson's version released on the album of the same name in 1976 had already sold millions and he would in all probability have wanted his "rightful share" if what you say is true. This may not be information to the contrary but when I interviewed Carlos Santana in 1978 (for the BBC) I asked him about Gabor because Carlos habitually goes into "Breezin'" when he plays "Samba Pa Ti" live. and he confided that Gabor would frequently come around to his apartment for a jam and that's where he picked it up. He also vouchsafed that the man was "not an easy person to like" because he was self-centred and had no interest in what anybody else was doing so it doesn't sound to me as though he was a person given to altruism who would hand over sole publishing rights involving millions of dollars. Anyway, it's all academic really, I suppose, with Bobby and Gabor both passed on and as far as ASCAP and PRS are concerned Mr Womack is the composer, but it's fun to conjecture on these things and maybe someone else will read our comments and come up with some cold ,hard and irrefutable facts on the subject - my best regards - Jay.

A wonderful; tasteful rendition of this song. What captured my attention was the balanced exchange between Birili and Joscho. They are both outstanding players but they each have their own voices and qualities and here they allowed each other the room to take the lead. Bass was also great and the glue that held everything together. I also really liked that neither one strayed totally away from the original melody line. So good and a real treat. Thank you fellas.

Oh Joscho, man you make that guitar sing so sweetly! These guys are at the pinnacle of guitar playing. It's one thing being technically excellent but quite another being able to convert that technical excellence into melodic, musicality which moves your soul.
And yet Bobby Womack song and Gabors interpretation still is soooooo good then Benson's take on Gabor's version and on and on. Now do your own take on this fun song
