1982 six game cameo for Hawthorn with ten goals 1984-1996 242 games 1021 goals Highest goals per game average for a non-specialist forward with 3.6 goals per game as he kicked 586 goals in 161 games as a half forward flank-wingman. Billy Brownless asked Malcolm Blight what was the best move he had ever made; Blight quipped “Moving [Gary] Ablett to full forward and you out of the way.” Ablett would flourish magnificently and superbly at full forward kicking 444 goals in 81 games averaging 5.5 goals per game. He won 3 straight Coleman Medals (1993;124 1994;129 1995;122) and even kicked 69 goals in his final season.
