Gary Anderson: Jordan F1 designer on working with Hunt & Prost

Gary Anderson joins Rob Widdows for the latest in our Engineering the Greats podcast series. The former Jordan designer tells how he started working life as a builder, then got his big break in F1 with Brabham as an engineer.
Moving on to McLaren, he worked with James Hunt and Alain Prost and was then in IndyCar before Eddie Jordan called him back to the UK - and F1 - where he would make his name designing the legendary Jordan 191.

Worship the ground this fella walks on. Being from Ireland and having him design an F1 car for an Irish team was the stuff of dreams for the likes of me. The 191 is the most beautiful F1 car ever made.

Whatever happend to the legendary Eghbal Hamidy? He was a top designer. Loved the Arrows he designed with Coughlan.

Eghbal more of an aerodynamicist than a "Team Principal" as they call it now .. an incredibly talented man who (IMO) wasn't suited to the role he ultimately ended up in at Jordan (Unlike Gascoigne who could do it all). If he had been left alone to design cars I think he would have been fine.

I have one his Anson Super Vee’s. ( SA3C) Very clever little car and pretty quick. I actually wrote to him at Jordan about it. Got a nice little reply on Jordan stationary. Gary will always be one of my personal hero’s.
