I can't understand why still in 2024 some people don't want to accept that the only way to gain fat/weight is via constant caloric surplus. After the Minneapolis Starvation study, in which every participant lost weight after going through an X amount of time on a caloric deficit (if not mistaken they basically only ate rice. But I could be wrong, I don't remember by heart now), it should be crystal clear that energy balance is King. But not, some people still prefer to continue believing in Santa. @gnomenorthofthewall19824 ай бұрын
Not an expert here, but basically only available mechanism is that you were hypocaloric. So you ate less than you consumed. For many people it's easier to stay hypocaloric if they eat less carbs and more fats and protein. They feel more satiated for longer, so less cravings and less over all eating. Doesn't work for everyone, but probably worked well for you.

It was the same for me, and I always loathed counting calories. So when I heard about low-carb diets and the insulin model I thought, 'great, maybe this works'! and it did, I could eat until I was full, never felt hungry, and lost a lot of weight. It's a valid question to ask how this matches up with the caloric model, and the followup question also ought to be, "Well why'd I stop losing weight at some point?" I couldn't cut any more carbs realistically, so I was forced to count calories if I wanted to try to lose more weight (which I did since I was still a little heavy). That also gave me enough motivation to run the numbers on my previous diet and subsequent low-carb diet and I found I'd "accidentally" reduced my caloric intake by about 900-1000 calories per day. So yeah, no wonder I lost weight, and fast. If you run your own numbers you might find a similar deficit that you weren't even aware of, because it may not even feel like you're dieting. Also, apparently on a low-carb diet you lose quite some water that your body otherwise retains but I am unsure of the actual impact of that beyond your measurable body weight.

This is only 2500kcal and within my budget but it would affect my sleep AND I wasn't getting that 'overnight' fasting affect (I'd sometimes still feel full in the morning!) because you're digestion slows right down at night. @@Elyoslayer it was an error before I was multitasking when I wrote it. Still, folks in DKA do in fact consume a ton of food and still lose weight because the "energy" isn't being directed anywhere but out the mouth, sweat glands, and into the toilette. There are cases wherein people will eat enough to maintain bodyweight, but usually they are in the "honeymoon period" of their diagnosis, so their body is still producing some insulin. The body also uses protein as fuel when it can't get glucose, causing further weight loss. In that case, the body is hungry for fuel and this hunger is not referring to the personal physical sensations of hunger.

Then unfortunately de novo lipogenesis will kick in, assuming you go over expenditure. DNL is something animals like cows and pigs do very well and efficiently; and something humans, too, CAN do, but we just prefer not to. So if there is dietary fat available, that's preferred. However, if not, carbs are still not free calories, and they will be converted to body fat in this extreme scenario where there is zero fat coming. This would be quite exceptional, though. But yea. Calories in, calories out still can't be cheated. It's worth nothing that DNL itself does spend calories, so if your gross calories are 100 calories over your expenditure, your net calories may be less once it's all said and done.

Regardless of what these trials show, I am still convinced that sugar is the big enemy in the American Diet. Some people like myself can't control my eating habits if I eat sugar throughout the day and I will definitely be chubby again in a few weeks or months and then I can stick to just protein and fat and get right back to my ripped 12% body fat in no time so there is definitely another element to this that he is over looking and really I don't think its fair or smart to encourage people that sugar is as nourishing or satiating as fat. I am prettys sure that if you take the sugar away from America the diabetes and other inflammatory diseases would eventually dissipate. I am not going to fall for this sugar is = to fat because I know what the animal kingdom runs on and I too could throw a study together in a controlled environment that shows similar but will we really be able to control our eating habits with sugar when they are not in a controlled study? Me and everybody I know has to treat sugar like a drug and be careful.
@maczilla074 ай бұрын
So taking into account my body and diet and the fact that Gary seems to be covering the element that people on a high sugar diet can't quite control their hunger and don' quite get as satiated on sugar, Well i am going to have to go with Gary on this one. Layne can always pull these studies out of his A$% but are us Americans really going to be in control and be as responsible on this sugar diet as they are in these RCT's? I mean come on man we are humans and we are basically born addicted to our own dopamine if we can find the tools or foods to get high on. Eric Clapton was very clear about his drug addiction started with sugar. And this apples to me also as it has taken me 10 years to get my sugar consumtion under control and I still lose control with these damn Butterfingers......lol
@gnomenorthofthewall19824 ай бұрын
@@maczilla07 Two different things here. Layne is not saying that you wouldn't get fat easier when eating lot of sugar. He is talking about biological mechanisms that Gary gets wrong. There is many more times calories in a 100grams of sugar than in a 100grams of meat and 100grams of meat keeps you satiated way longer than same amount of sugar, so you feel less hunger. The problem is that people eat too much highly energy dense food, so they get too much calories. But Gary still gets the biological mechanism wrong although he is correct if he says that people eat too much sugar and other energy dense food. Layne says the same thing, but he gets the biological mechanisms right
@Melesniannon4 ай бұрын
@@gnomenorthofthewall1982 There aren't "many times" more calories in 100 grams of sugar than in 100 grams of meat, and there aren't even "more calories" if you look at actual meat. If you take 100 grams of meat as a "meal portion" you need to talk about what kind of meat it is and you can easily find meat that has more calories per 100 grams than the 400 kcal of 100 grams of sguar. If you look at meat as its constituent macronutrients then meat is a mixture of protein and fat. Protein has the same caloric value as carbohydrates, 4 kcal per gram. Fats have 9 kcal per gram. Given that 100g sugar is 400 kcal, meat is only equivalent if it's 100% protein but has a higher caloric value with the fat in it. The reason the meat you buy at the store can list a lower caloric value than 400 kcal is because it's full of water, with low-caloric meats (100-200 calories) being up to 80% water. If you measure the caloric value of the actual meat it's *higher* than sugar per 100 grams.
